Flight Motion Simulators for Gamers

Greetings,

So you invested a lot in VR technology playing Elite Dangerous and perhaps not happy with Frontier providing what you desire in Odyssey. I can understand that with Frontier promoting VR for years then moving on they cannot totally support VR in Odyssey? Does their proprietary Cobra engine fail at this? Owning a PlayStation 4 Pro version of ED will it be worth buying Odyssey? Many questions without answers.

Other games have totally dialed VR on ground combat even using Windows 7 PCs with decent frame rates. They are not perfect but work and keep improving on them. What is Frontier doing other than saying we won't currently support Odyssey in VR? That is for another thread with many already discussing it on the Forum. Frontier doesn't seem to have an answer at the moment. We'll see...

But I digress from my post.

Here is a company called DOF Reality that provides flight simulator consumer motion hardware moving around in your chair (you pick it) from the basic $749.00 to $6489.00 that will complete any immersive game experience from racing cars, flying aircraft to flying space ships. They have got it down without costing a fortune with 7 figures from Boeing. Here's a video. They have more.

Still if only buying this for Elite Dangerous I would have issues. With X-Plane 11 or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 no problem. But your wife will have to love you using a room in your house for all this tech gear. If you find a gal that flies Elite Dangerous ships better than you then that is a keeper! :)

Regards

Built my own @Hooplah - full 6dof 2.5kW now with variable power-settings, touchscreen controls and data screens. It even has a seatbelt (for cqc). Programmed it to work with all the other titles you mention and it works well in ED too. Best project I ever done (and quite a bit cheaper than the commercial models). All my builds are in my sig.

Greetings,

I'm impressed with your build. For years I was an awesome electronics/tech guy with major USA companies but you added welding skills! You win! Perhaps you should be working for DOF Reality or even Boeing? Maybe it is a suit/tie/beard thing. They are stuffy about that.

Suggestions...

Get some C++/network wizards to assist with capturing game movements in ED besides the joystick. A few others looking at the problem might throw an idea against the wall and it sticks! It took 11,000 people to land a man on the Moon. Couldn't hurt to have a few looking at your current challenges and getting there sooner.

I would also look at say VKBsim versus CH controllers for much more precise and very programmable to match what you have accomplished. CH seems to be the weak link in the plumbing.

Finally a structural engineer/artist to make your design look 'pretty' as if they were made exclusively for ED, XP-11, MFS 2020 etc. Thrustmaster did well in sales designing for the A-10 Warthog in a flight simulator. It is an immersion thing. Many who buy a Corvette in the USA are emotioally attracted to the appearance and the prestige of owning one. They will pay a fortune versus not having a clue how or care about ever driving to it's design abilities.

blastered...love it. www.blastered.com could be a winner. Meanwhile here's what is in my garage gathering dust while I play ED.

OMG, I'd never leave the house and my wife would divorce me..... but stil.... 🤔😏
Well, before I would be able to buy & install something like this in my apartment,
I would have to decide what should I sell first:

my 630HP car I have been tuning for years
or
my wife to organ traffickers.

And it's a hard choice.

PS. Anyone looking for a kidney or sth, PM me.

Can your wife fly Elite ships better than you? Then maybe the organs you are considering to sell won't come from her...:)

Thanks for the reply and kind words @Hooplah !
In answer to some of your suggestions - already been using - (ahem)- 'game data' for a while now. Great for auto docking, landing, and it hurts when I crash or explosions happen nearby (especially painful in cqc lol hence the seatbelt). Also have a 'special' coding for srv use (as that has different motion profiles). All works really well.
Regarding the HOTAS, precise accuracy goes out of the window really especially when the whole rig is moving with force - I prefer reliability which CH has (and not as pricey as the excellent VKB).
The rig is always being modded and adapted as I go so not bothered about pretty at this time - just needs to be very functional as I use it every day and it has been 99.9% reliable so far with only periodic maintenance (usually replacing the positional potentiometers once or twice a year).
Blastard was my game-name in Quake (was once in top 5% in world at that a lifetime ago lol).
I like the bike (don't get me started on them! - I design and build trickster roadbikes too) - here is a pic of my 'slowest one' (only 228rwhp - or 1140bhp equivalent if it was weight of a car on power to weigh ratio ) - often seen in the background on my many youtube vids (it has a fat hybrid turbocharger under the tank).
Take care
Blastard
