Horizons found purpose for landing on planets

Ammo syntehis for rail guns and frag cannons
The basic version reloads one weapon with half ammo (e.g railgun 15 rounds) both of the better versions reloads your weapon to full with added bonus
Even with the basic version this means rail guns are usable now as its not problem to collect and carry materials for 20 basic reloads (for rail gun) thats 300 rounds of ammo right there with you.
Frag cannons are now 90 rounds (before they were 30 rounds) so its not such a big problem now but its nice to have couple of reloads on board

Tried also FSD boost synthesis but its pain to use for explorers. FSD boost-increased range will not count (for the first jump) when ploting multiple jump route. To use FPS boost you have to make single jump. So FSD boost cant be used to speed up the travel its use its purely situational e.g you want to get to that unreachable system... but make sure you carry more than one FSD boost because you can get stuck there !
FSD boost is now IMO most usable for traders to make 2 jump routes to single jump.

You did not try to collect them your self, right?
You will spend by far more time collecting materials then on rearming at nearest station.
Also 50%, and especially 100% FSD boosts are VERY hard to get, you will most likely spend few days, or even weeks, just to get 2 boosts to travel to previously unreachable star. And after that you will not even think about wasting them on a single trade run.

ofc I collected the materials myself who else ? For basic rail gun reload you need 2 iron, 1 vanadium that is no problem to get. Also try to go for pirate hunting with rail guns after you down one pirate python with rail guns you are outta ammo so shoot down one pirate and head to rearm at station is no option for me

Yes, 2 iron and 1 vanadium. For 50% of ammo for each rail. If you have a pair of rails to fully reload them you will need 8 iron and 4 vanadium. How much time will it require? Vanadium is not that common...
And if you spend it all on a single python, getting 100K bounty... you will probably get very poor profit, like 50k/hour.

And yes, this reloads are a good option, but they do not significantly change how usefull rails are in pve...

As part of the Horizons season of updates Synthesis is being expanded into full blown crafting of ship weapons and components allowing players to customise the output. Many, but not all of the required mats will come from planets, the rest from minning

Before 1.5 I tried to equip imperial courier with 3 rail guns and went to test it then shot down one pirate dangerous python and I was out of ammo. It was a test to see the viability of rail guns. Result = not viable because of few ammo and the need to leave RES, CZ... and reload at station

I am using for combat anaconda with mixed weapon loadout incl rail guns, frag cannons, pulses, huge cannon so I am not 100% dependant on rail guns.
Materials 8 iron, 4 vanadium around 10-15min if on right place

For me landing on planets and driving around is fun but I need purpose and I dont care how long it takes. If I spend 3 hours landing and driving around planets and after that I will have material for 20 basic railgun reload I am fine with that.
If you want to max credits/hour, open trading tools get trade conda and go trading I wont argue with you.

We should also be getting mats from destroyed ships, if I remember rightly.

I definitely won't be harvesting on planets for ammo (unless I just happen to come across the required mats). It'll be interesting to see if you can keep ammo going with mats scooped from ship kills. I'm guessing not, though. And scooping is a pain in any case.

I do not want/need max cr/h, it just looks a bit pointless to me... i gues to each their own.
And yes, landing/driving is fun. Been doing it since release without any secific purpose. Collected some rare materials for 50/100 FSD boosts and few premium reloads, but did not see any reason to collect basic ones, because storage space is VERY limited.

I spent about 4 hours rolling on planet surfaces last night. I've now got enough materials for all 9 syntheses of the SRV, 2 out of 3 FSD Injections, and a bunch of the others.

It's all about looking at which materials you're interested in for particular syntheses, setting yourself a target for only those materials, and going to get them.
Being on the right type of planet also helps.
Metal rich or 100% metal planets are great for Iron, Nickel, Chromium and some of the heavier exotic materials.

My personal take on planetary landing is that it is something you do once in a while to top up your materials.

Why would a trader bother? If you've got the mats on board anyway, then sure, but they are rare enough that finding them is quite time consuming, so I doubt a trader would go mat hunting for FSD boost just to maximize credits per hour.

IIRC, looting is also meant to allow us to collect modules from wrecked ships, which we can then customize. I could be mistaken though.
