I'd call it a galaxy sim with a game on top where we are stuck in our cockpits/bridge (SRV or ship) and can't land on atmospheric planets. I wouldn't call it a space sim.I agree about the other two, but...
Elite is not a spacesim? How do you figure?
Our entire galaxy is simulated like never before in a game, and we get to play around with spaceships.
For me that qualifies as a spacesim.
Yep, to the point where it really isn't even fair to call most of the AIs abysmal. Because it's very very hard to make a believable AI and almost impossible to write an AI that outsmarts experienced human players who know how to game the system. That's why AI pretty much always has to cheat or have superior numbers unless the game is one with strict, calculable rules like chess.
Otherwise they're going to be too easy.

I'll just point you to any video where a T10 is crashed at full speed on a high G planet and loose one ring of shield. At a point in the progression curve, your ship is just plainly uncrashable. Doesnt sound like a simulation to me.

I just want to fly a ship in space.
I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in First or even Third Person Shooter gameplay in this game. I have other games for that sort of thing, which I suspect do it better than anything Frontier can do with the Cobra Engine, certainly on Xbox. I have Gears 5, Titanfall 2, Halo: MCC and god-knows what else available to play thanks to Xbox Game Pass. And yet, I always come back to the game that let's me fly a spaceship.
That, in my opinion, is what this game's primary focus should be. I'll be disappointed if Frontier have spent any considerable time in the last 18 months developing ground-shooter ganeplay vs Thargoid Ground Troops, when there's more pressing issues with existing features (points to Galnet, Powerplay, Mulitcrew, half-baked Codex and Enzyme missiles which still don't work properly, years after release).
Oh you cynic, you...The only reason to get Elite involved in the FPS market is to provide players with a buggy half-baked game experience and no direction in 2 different genres in a single game albeit with decent intentions and BR support. Of course the ganking will be good.

Even if space legs does come out, the game will not be about walking about and you can still call it a space sim if you want. I also hope for some cool space suit gameplay as well as some cool gameplay on planet surfaces and possibly stations/bases. I would like to see the installations dockable and mission available from the space bar or the science installation, or the military base where you get more unique, personal missions for youself. Maybe you can build up relationships with these NPCs in a different fashion to factions. Not being able to walk around does not detract from Elite being a spacesim, I think. Spacesims never were about walking around. As far as I am concerned being able to leave my ship in an awesome buggy and drive around on planets is already incredibly cool, but I do hope we get some cool spacesuit gameplay too eventually. For me however that is not a priority.
Agreed. They should start with basic atmospherics first, such as planets like mars of today. Planets with complex life on them can wait as to do those justice is just a massively huge amount of work or they will end up looking like NMS.The fact that we are still not able to land on atmospheric planets is of course a regrettable afair, but in the first primitive spacesims you couldn't land on planets at all.
For me getting access to atmospheric planets and also the upper layers of gas giants is definitely a priority. I really, really want that. But I do understand that the amount of work to create somewhat realistic atmospheric planets must be huge. Atmospheric planets will have to look a lot better than those in 'Frontier: Elite II' to be acceptable nowadays.
You just don't understand modern shield technology
Of course, the ship was being piloted by remote HoloMe™, but the odd-looking mural on the cockpit (not seen in the video) was, in fact the once live cockpit cat. Coincidentally called Veneer after a mix-up between a book of cat's names and a thesaurus.![]()
