I did look at Takin, but wasn't sure as wikipedia points to it being a gnu goat .. but wildebeests are gnus too so I suppose they are possible contenders.

A nice easy one for the next challenge, next week. So I suspect a high number this time. but I could be wrong.

Eat Your Veggies

Every good dietician knows you should "always eat your vegetables"; the awesome herbivores in Planet Zoo are living proof of why! Work together this week to give them the spotlight by breeding bronze rated herbivores.

The antelope zoo would be a perfect continuation for the next challenge.

I ended up with this for the Antelope challenge. With room to expand to include the other antelope species.

From left to right ..
South Western Grasslands of Africa for the Gemsbok and Springbok.
Eastern Grasslands of Africa for the Thomsons Gazelle and Sable Antelope
Northern Deserts of Africa for the Addax and Dama Gazelle.

Thoughts for expanding for next challenge and still be viable for both challenges in the future ...

Distribute the Eastern Grasslands and Northern Deserts habitats to their appropriate areas in the zoo, and add areas for :

Central Grasslands - Scimitar-Horned Oryx and Nile Lechwe
South East Grasslands - Nyala and Wildebeest

This leaves Bongo in the Central/West Tropics so could be placed alongside the Central or Eastern Grasslands or both space permitting.

And time permitting as it will likely not count towards the challenge but there for when they do add that DLC to the challenges animal list, Update the South Western Grasslands so Kirk's antelope can be added.

I'll stick to the same zoo too, which works well with limited time this week and 4 species proved plenty

Just clearing out all the antelopes from the trade centre that never made it to 3 stars and will play a little to further improve the stock ready for the next challenge

Was not expecting to wake up this morning to start the challenge, only to find that it's already completed 😲
Which seems odd given that 3 births has put me onto the first of the gold steps!
I'm wondering if they've not reset the completion status - did anyone see anything other than 100%?

It's a very easy challenge. I got on the 3rd step with just 5 animals ( the first of the gold steps you got with 3 that is ) . It was at 18% when I started before I went to bed this morning and 25% when I logged off a few minutes later at 3:12am UK time .. a 7% change in that short time span and 25% over 3 hours just means that there were a lot of people taking part that might not have been planning to. After all this one is just breeding bronze rated herbivores, which I suspect many people will have plenty of. I just worked on my A zoo and added one animal habitat with the other 5 species in there already breeding like crazy rofl.

The poor console people however .... 3% at the moment. Sounds like PC is still where it's at rofl. nudge nudge Frontier rofl

That sounds legit then (y)
And I was thinking similarly - that maybe people are contributing almost accidentally :)
Just a bit of an anticlimax to prep for a challenge only to find there's nothing left to do :(

But I can at least finish refining the 4 desert antelopes - 2 of them are all 100,100 for size and longevity and I'm not far off with the other two and can then restock the zoos I stole them from

Next Community Challenge

It's a curious cat ...

If you offer them a mouse, they only want a rat. If you offer them a rat then they'd rather chase a mouse! No matter their mood today, help our our feline friends by releasing 5* big cats for this week's community challenge!

From Wikipedia
The term "big cat" is typically used to refer to any of the five living members of the genus Panthera, namely the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard, and snow leopard. Both the cheetah and cougar differ physically from fellow big cats, and to a greater extent, other small cats.

One of Wikipedia's sources for this is a book titled 'Supermatrix and species tree methods resolve phylogenetic relationships within the big cats, Panthera (Carnivora: Felidae)' which has the following abstract mention.
'The pantherine lineage of cats diverged from the remainder of modern Felidae less than 11 million years ago and consists of the five big cats of the genus Panthera, the lion, tiger, jaguar, leopard, and snow leopard, as well as the closely related clouded leopard.'

Likely
  • African Leopard - Panthera pardus pardus - Africa Savannah
  • Amur Leopard - Panthera pardus orientalis - Asia Temperate
  • Bengal Tiger - Panthera tigris tigris - Asia Temperate
  • Jaguar - Panthera onca - South American Rainforest
  • Siberian Tiger - Panthera tigris altaica - Taiga
  • Snow Leopard - Panthera uncia - Asia Tundra
  • West African Lion - Panthera leo - Africa Savannah

Possible 'big cat' inclusions
  • Cheetah - Acinonyx jubatus - Africa Savannah
  • Clouded Leopard - Neofelis nebulosa - Asia Rainforest
  • Cougar - Puma concolor - Americas Temperate

Unlikely
  • Caracal - Caracal caracal - Africa Savannah
  • Eurasian Lynx - Lynx lynx - Europe/Asia Temperate
  • Fossa - Cryptoprocta ferox - Africa Temperate
  • Pallas's Cat - Otocolobus manul - Asia Temperate
  • Sand Cat - Felis margarita - Africa/Asia Desert

I'd wonder about the Fossa and the Caracal too, as both weigh less than 20Kg and maybe the Clouded Leopard too, but I suppose that's still 4 times the weight of a domestic cat

And google says this about Fossas:

But still seems like plenty of obvious candidates to choose from.
I like the idea of a proper big cat zoo, split by continents and/or climates (and guests included! :p )

I suspect the following are prime candidates, although the stress on big cats makes me wonder if the smaller ones in the game won't count :
The term "big cat" does not actually have anything to do with size but rather a classification.

The members of big cat family are Tigers, Lions, Jaguars, Leopards and Snow Leopards. Anything else should not count. And definetely not the Fossa, they are not cats at all.

But Frontier Challenges aren't always that precise :D - think they fairly recently allowed Pronghorn Antelopes for the Antelope challenge
So we have a week to wait to find out whether it's big "cat" or "big cat"

Ah thanks for that extra bit of knowledge. I can see from wikipedia that, as you say, it applies to the Panthera genus of cats. Whether they use the genus they have in the animals description page is another thing however. I'll make some changes to my original post to highlight the more likely suspects and the possibles to accompany the unlikelys.

Deciding to get a bit more ambitious with this zoo
Just the land and sea sorted at this point, with a 10m wide path connecting where the animals will go
(water not clean yet, hopefully it will end up a bit bluer)

Think the real trick will be encouraging the guests to keep moving along the path:
  • might need a few extra species filling in some of the gaps (sand cat and clouded leopard maybe)
  • definitely going to need a transport ride connecting the two ends and probably the entrance too

:ROFLMAO: Just now thinking I should have drawn the map sideways, so I could have had the entrance at the Cougars 😠

And strange to realise that I think this is the first time in my life that I've drawn a map of the world!
