Freezing and CTD - how I solved it post-patch

ED ran fine before the latest update. I ran mostly high/ultra settings.
I have an NVidia GTX-1080 and run in 4K resolution.

The day of the update and following days were a nightmare. Constant freezing up in game to the point I had to hard reboot my PC as even CntrlAltDelete to bring up taskmanager failed to work! CTD was also about 4x an hour in between the freezing up.
By coincidence NVidia had also just released an updated driver around that day. I grabbed an old September NVidia driver and did a clean install (hated to do that but out of ideas). I then walked through ED settings in steps starting with low quality and raising up and testing. Better, but still issues! Finally I had to drop game resolution down to 2160x1440 in order to play the game with mostly no hick ups and higher quality settings.

This is the first game I've had that my 1080 didn't seem to handle well. Before the update that wasn't true.
Anyway, if this helps anyone reduce or stop freezing up and ctd here it is.

It occurs on AMD cards as well, with the latest Adrenaline drivers.

So i think its a more fundamental bug than merely a dodgy driver batch from nvidia

Dont know if this will help anyone, but I historically always used to have a similar problem with elite that people are now reporting since the update, usually after exciting Hyperspace. I have noticed alot of the current complaints are centred around freezes after exciting hyperspace.

My Gfx card is a GTX980 SuperClocked and my problem only affected people with that exact card. The eventual solution suggested was that I had to underclock the GfX card by 80ghz. Not sure why it worked but assume to do with graphic card load of empty void of space, to huge star, sky box etc. Anyway have never had the problem since, and now since the update I might get minor stuttering rarely upon entering a new system, but no freezes like others experience.

Cant help but think the lighting changes put more stress on Gfx cards so that the empty void of space to entering a new system is more pronounced and so this problem is hitting a fresh range of people and wider gfx card variety.

Thanks for this. I will give this a try. My card is EVGA so the Precision software will make this an easy thing to try.
