Frontier, can we PLEASE have a new Exploration ship now?

For anyone who doesn't know, here's the Imperial Explorer from the 1995 version of the game:

Here's the description:

This is one of the biggest ships around, and completes the trilogy of the bigger Imperial ships. Originally designed for exploring the galaxy looking for new planets, this ship is equipped with fuel scoop, giving you huge range - although this is limited by the fact that the drive would break down after a year's lack of servicing, so you shouldn't stray too far from inhabited space. It is also a good trading ship, but many see this as a waste of the ship's potential.
Rank-lock is not a big deal. Make it a large ship. Make it really expensive. Rank-lock it. No problem.

I also want to suggest that all the limpet controllers should come with 1 ton of cargo space so that you wouldn't have to fit a dedicated cargo rack on a small explorer.

You all could've had the next exploration ship already, but when they gave the T-7 a larger FSD you whined and moaned until they took it back. Oh, well.

Some seem to think the latest FOTM ship magically solves the problems of Exploration.

NVM.
The Krait is effectively as exploration "focused" as the Python. It just so happens that we got the FSD booster so people think it can have 57 Ly by its own merit (by that I mean they might think it doesn't need it to achieve such jump ranges) while the Anaconda is now getting closer to 83 Ly and the Asp above 70 ly.

The problem of fixing exploration is not a ship problem though.

So even if everyone saying they wanted an exploration ship got what they wanted tomorrow they are still gonna be doing stuff that every other ship in the game can do.

Lets get some improvement to the actual act of exploration, maybe even some things that actually require a specialised ship other than a few scanners and an SRV

At that point this discussion would have a lot more merit imo.

At the moment its pretty much boiling down to 'I want' rather than any real need for an exploration ship in game.

Just replaced my AspX with a Krait. Didn't want to keep fretting about losing my only SRV getting stuck in Guardian ruins. I now carry four SRV's and a Condor SLF - plus the size 4 CRCR holding Guardian artifacts - in a ship witn a max jumprange over 56ly that can land almost anywhere (and has a look-down canopy too). Very impressed (though unfortunate that I ran out of slots for a shield).

Clearly the AspX would still have a better jumprange when boosted (but a shortage of remaining slots to actually carry anything bulky), so I might keep one, haven't decided on that yet.

Actually with the fsd booster every ship is now an explorer. While the krate is a nice ship "still doesn't out class the python" When I decide to go out in the black again. Asp and annie are still the go to ships to reach hard to reach spots. So no, we don't need a new ship for exploration. Any ship will do now. Jump range doesn't mean much now when the asp used to get 30 ly jumps kitted pre engy. I'll be taking a clipper. :) Long live the empire.

Would you prefer a ship that jumps 80LY but only has 5 optional slots, or one that jumps 40LY with 9?
I'll take the 5 slot ship with the following conditions:
Gutamaya
Sidewinder size
Near-Eagle pitch/roll/yaw with Courier's outside-the-blue-zone flexibility
800+ boost
Viper4-like shield capacity (~200 with biweave)
4 small hardpoints (2beam, 1rail, 1mc or mining)
2 utilities (shield booster, heatsink)
hull: 50

c2 fsd/fuel/dist/pp/thruster (or maybe c3 fsd/fuel, but then need c3 scoop)
c1 lifesupport/sensors

c2 scoop/srv/shield
c1 ads/dss

^ I want this ship. I would ditch my courier for it.

Other thoughts...

1)
a)
The idea has been mentioned before. Giving "lightweight" bulkheads mass, lets say it makes up some % (lets say military armor mass) of the current hull mass, would give reason to use lightweight mods on it -> more jump range. This would allow FDev to nerf the conda while also keeping it's jump range as it currently is (with engineering). It would also make heavy-duty no longer the only engineering worth using on it. This would give us the option to make "any" ship into an "explorer" (high jump range) by sacrificing hull integrity (which most in this thread seem to think is acceptable).
b)
The other option is to reduce hull mass on ALL other ships to close the gap with the conda. DBX should have the highest jump range, followed by ASPX. Orca/Beluga/Dolphin should be right up there close too. Followed by multipurpose (lead by conda), and combat ships last.
c)
Finally, the option that makes the most sense: nerf the conda. By far the easiest way to bring some balance is just to increase it's mass. People flock to overpowered. Let them cry about it, it needs to happen for the good of the game.

2)
Add 2 c1 slots into ALL multipurpose ships (ships that do not already have any restricted slots). 6 just isn't enough anymore.
Balance HRPs so that 2 c1 = 1 c2. This will fix the problem. Also swap the reinforcement between E and D modules. For max HP use the heavier E class. For better armor/mass ratio use D but you shouldn't get as much armor. As it is, E is worthless.

3)
Lightweight engineering for all modules that don't have it yet. Especially SRV/ADS/DSS/mininglaser. The very things we need for exploration are hurting jump range. (very significant for small ships)
I'll also mention here: FSD booster, since 1.3t is a lot for a lightweight ship but is nothing to a heavier one. I wouldn't complain if it was made weightless like scoop/afm, since the mass is only really noticed by small ships.

4)
More ships is always better. If a dedicated explorer will improve ship use diversity, then +support.
I wouldn't use it though. I balance combat/exploration. I would rather a medium Gutamaya multipurpose ship for ~70mil that is worth every credit.

I'll concede the FSD booster helps a lot (and in the process nearly invalidates smaller explorers like the DBX), and I got my Krait up to 55LY which is impressive. If no other ship comes before DW2, I'll likely be using this one as the SLF is a game changer for exploration.

But by the same token, when other specialized ships come out, there'a very little in the way of talk of them having less firepower or less durability for said role because of that specialization. Of all the different 'careers' in the game, only explorers are forced into taking a multirole ship. But that multirole includes being balanced around fat power distributors and loads of hardpoints. But if explorers had a ship with a lower power distributor and only a very few number of hardpoints for whatever drone type device the devs might include in the exploration update, then it can be balanced out with a lower weight and greater jump range. After all, explorers already strip those ships of defensive everything before flying out to the Abyss.

What? All ships are exploration ships with the possible exception of the Diamondbacks due to their poor fuel scooping potential. :p

We may be getting some new mechanics before too long to help differentiate exploration ships and maybe things like exploration specific internal module room on some ships.

We'll see.

I will hazard a guess you got all the imperial ranks?
Nope. Not yet. I just don't think an end-game exploration ship is necessarily a bad thing.

Most people seem to approach this game with the attitude that they will have the best of the best or they'll not bother playing at all. If that's your opinion too, then I can see why rank lock would bother you. If you're a bit more patient though, and you plan to still be playing the game years from now when you can land on earth-likes, then you wont mind. Go exploring now in a DBX. Later on, try an AspX. Later on, try a Conda.

But some people - they wont be happy (currently) with anything short of a Conda. And if there was an Imperial Explorer in the game, they wouldn't be happy with anything less than an Imperial Explorer. And for those people, I understand why they'd be upset. They're like the people complaining about the rank grind for a vette. I actually do have an FGS because I bought it during a week when they removed the rank lock, but I don't have the rank for it, and certainly not the rank for a vette (I also don't have elite in any of the four fields). But some people, they seem to think the game is not worth playing at all until they get their hands on that vette.

I wish that FDev would give us a "simulator mode" where you could fly any ship with any loadout - even do PvP if you wanted to. Just so that people wouldn't feel like they're missing out.

I'm not sure I do.

Exploration, itself, takes patience so it's a bit disappointing that people who'll happily take months to get wherever they're going aren't willing to take the time to unlock a ship that might help get them there.

Like a lot of other things in this game, if you want to accomplish something, chances are there's something else you're going to have to do first.

I would have thought that if anybody'd have the required patience, it'd be explorers.

Good.

It's supposed to be a 2nd-rate cargo-hauler.
Not a super-duper exploration ship.
Replies like this along with the way the community overreacted to the T-7 buff in order to protect the status-quo for their precious AspX's and DBX's is why I'm hesitant to think that this community really wants another exploration ship.

What would make the community willing to accept a new ship to replace the AspX or DBX when they've already reacted so poorly at the possibility of having the roster expanded once before?
