Powerplay Frustration over this PowerPlay issue and PvE vs PvP in general

I think most people here have the capability to choose what, when and how they want to play.

So why is so much energy and effort being wasted trying to incentivize or persuade people to play in modes they simply do not care to just to play the same game?

I am an adult. I enjoy both PvE and PvP. I know when and how I want to play each mode and I am beyond frustrated with continually having one side or the other trying to impose their CHOICE of playstyle on the other with imbalanced systems or incentives designed exclusively to manipulate people into playing in a mode they may not want.

Weak systems with janky incentives and imbalances that open possibilities for grief from either side only breeds contempt for the whole thing.

Flagging or two completely seperate content modes works! Both are simple, elegant and retain choice, full stop!

Instead of spending so much energy, time, money and effort trying to devise some elaborate system that is only devised to persuade people into doing things they do not want to why not create content everybody can enjoy and let people choose for themselves how and when they want to interact and play.

By pledging to any power, you accept that you become "hostile" to all other powers not aligned to your superpower. That is why when you enter non-allied power systems it displays as hostile in game. Both NPCs and other pledged players therefore see you as hostile, so I think calling player vs player combat griefing fails to understand that by pledging to a power you have already accepted that you are a target and display thet flag to your enemies.

Open only is one of a package of proposals that together aim to improve powerplay. Powerplay involves both PvE and PvP and open only aims to ensure those wanting to support their power have to accept the risks of openly wearing their flag to do so. If people do not want to accept those risks, they won't and that is fine. That is certainly not a reason for Fdev to not improve powerplay for those who want to support their power and will adapt how they must play in order to do that. By only affecting unredeemed merits it gives people the freedom to support their power in open when they fancy doing powerplay, or do whatever else they want to do in any other mode at other times.

It depends on what you originally though Power-play was supposed to be. Personally, I hoped it to be somewhere where consensual PvP could happen, with players flying cargo/doing missions with player wing mates defending them against other player privateers (i.e. pirates but in the name of another power). This was always undermined by the fact that you didn't need player escorts if you could avoid pirates in solo and /or pvt.

To me the solution is quite simple really, let everyone play powerplay in any mode (so they can earn their merits for the modules or the trade bonuses) they want but Solo and Pvt players have no vote and no effect on the Powerplay section of the background simulation. That and you make it possible that being able to defend a system in your power by the use of intercepting ships of hostile powers work.

Open-Only Powerplay isn't about stopping people from choosing how to play, haulers would be essential to it still. They just wouldn't be the be-all and end-all any more, and everyone else's choice of play would have a place too. Haulers will need combat pilots, combat pilots still need haulers. Most PPers ive known are both of these anyway, its just a case of who needs fast merits most, as to what they would choose to do in any place or time.

As it stands, People's choice of gameplay can make any other choice so ineffective as to be invalid. The Proposals rebalance the gameplay so other choices are possible and valid. It is opening up gameplay options, not removing them. Having some experience and understanding of how things currently work helps to see that. At first glance it is counter-intuitive, no doubt.

Fixed it for you.

You must be new around here... ;)

You are right of course, but that's just not how FD rolls. FD took a single player game, added multiplayer with no consequence, and "modes" to separate players yet still allow them to influence each others modes... And they've just been adding layers of complexity since then. Less and less makes sense. Very few players (and devs?) actually have a clue how anything works any more.

Dedicating PowerPlay to a "direct" PvP scenario is just another in a long line of Hail Marys from FD, trying to give PvP context and meaning. It probably won't work, but players have generally given up and accepted that FD has no clue how to make a multiplayer game, and has no intention of bringing anyone on board who has.

So we sit back with bated breath and wait for each new curve ball.

  • Elite: Dangerous is beautiful in Solo mode (except for the mode BGS interference of course - should have been Off-line mode anyway).
  • It's good if you choose to PvE in a Private Group,
  • and it's a mess if you look for meaningful contextual direct PvP in Open mode. Love it or leave it.

Fly safe :)
