FSD: How Much Can I Upgrade It?

If you are looking for maximum range the basic idea is reduce mass as much as possible. It kind of depends on what you are hoping to do as to how far you can take things. If you need weapons you can engineer lightweight mods, if you don't need weapons you can remove them completely. For most people it's reasonable to switch the sensors and life support to D rated modules. If you aren't flying in open and aren't going to get involved in combat you can see if you can get away with using smaller modules than standard. There are compromises to be made.

I have a few drives for my condas that each yeild a range of 62ly or higher for my exploration build (which includes shields, SRVs, and SLFs). While the FSD mod is certainly important, it has been my experience that the second most important mod (in terms of impacting junp range) has been the lightweight mod on the internal sensors.

The next important item is the power plant and thrusters. Get a too small power plant that is overcharged enough to handle just under your max power requirements. You can disable yor cargo scoop, planetary hanger, and AFMU until you actually need them. I believe the clean drive mod can reduce mass as well, but not sure off the top of my head. This will also allow you to get a smaller capacitor than you had before, though you may not be able to boost in this configuration.

It gets harder if you add shields, but not impossible.

In 3.0, the FSD will be upgradeable to 61% with the experimental mod that decreases mass (intelligent mass effect). That's what I shall go for.

I never saw an experimental effect called 'intelligent mass effect' There are five effects, Mass manager or Deep charge would be the best option for highest range.

FSD - Deep Charge - Gives you a 10% increase in max fuel per jump
FSD - Double Braced - Increased FSD integrity
FSD - Stripped Down - Lightweight FSD
FSD - Mass Manager - Direct increase to your optimised mass (Highest Jump range)
FSD - Thermal Spread - Reduced FSD Thermal Load

G5 FSD long-range mod.

Fit D-rated modules (the lightest of any class) to almost everything* except the FSD.

Fit lower-class modules where possible - thrusters, power-plant, power-distributor etc.

Engineer as many modules as possible for light weight.

*Always fit an A-rated Power Plant rather than a D-rated one.
D-rated PPs have terrible thermal characteristics and will cause overheating.
Fit an A-rated PP of 1 class lower and then overcharge it if necessary. The results will be better.
