Galaxy Map and VR

I had that issue too - then I realised I had turned them off ... d'oh! I think the option in the right most tab is "navigation markers" or something like that - top option as I recall (I had the top two turned off, one of them definitely put them back on). Things got a whole lot easier after that once I had sorted the keybinds a bit. Still a bit of a curve after being used to mouse & kb for the last few months (Rift was taking a rest as I was using in-game chat a lot and that is next to impossible with VR ...)

Ah, seems like we're, uhm, circling it in, huh?
Couldn't resist.
:x

edit: yup, it's the grid. I'm feeling really, really dumb now...

I wouldn't feel but so dumb. My grids were turned off by default. I have been messing with this for hours, reading and trying things, mouse x52 which is mapped well out of the gate. Mouse couldn't click anything reliably and when I tried to use only the x52 I could browse around but no panel would pop up for the planets. Nothing was being selected. Turning on the grids fixed it for me. Honestly I was just about to give up on the game completely it was so frustrating. Thank you Kietrax for pointing out where this setting is. Seems to work like a dream now. I'm back in the game

With a proper HOTAS bindings set up the galaxy map is very intuitive in VR but one thing it really needs (still) is a virtual keyboard so you can type in the system names more easily. This feature has been asked for pretty much since the beginning when the DK2 and VR was first supported.

Come on FD! Surely there are enough VR users to push this up the priority list now?

Doesn't look like FD have any intention of doing a virtual keyboard so we have to hope Oculus have something in the works:

I asked a dev in a private message about that, and they replied saying no it won't be happening for specific reasons, so I have been practicing touch typing since.

This is the reply in full:

A virtual keyboard is not something we at Frontier would be interested in making for a number of reasons.

1) It's a rather large undertaking. The simplicity of it looking just like that dumb bit of plastic you've been using for years masks an underlying complexity in implementation.

2) We (and I also believe users) would prefer to rely on OS support for providing a virtual keyboard (like XB1/PS4/OSX/Windows) - though in this case, the 'OS' is the HMD vendor.

You didn't say which HMD you're using to play Elite - but I believe Vive already has support for this via SteamVR. I've not tried it - but i hear you can also 'peek' at your keyboard using the front-facing camera (though I also hear the quality's not great).

If you're using Oculus - You might be out of luck for now. I can't find any mention of support for a virtual keyboard - but I'd be very surprised if it's not already in the works.
