I fully support this - its something I raised during previous beta's, and others have raised from time to time. It causes me endless frustration.
The problems as I see them are:
- The auto-select sometimes pops up over the top of the thing you wanted to select
- The auto-select selects something else as you pass over it on the way to selecting a new tab on the left-hand side
- The auto-select can sometimes take 10-20 seconds to decide to select the thing you are hovering over. Sometimes it never selects it at all.
The first two apply to both the Galaxy and System maps. The latter primarily to the Galaxy map.
For me it is the last issue that is the most frustrating of all. I spend more time swearing at the galaxy map because of this issue than anything else.
The solution, as the OP suggests, is very simple - include an option for click-to-select instead of auto-select; but it needs to be 100% reliable and instantaneous - click and it instantly selects the star and pops up the context menu. Since the PC has enough information to render the star and its name on the map, there is clearly enough information available to instantly identify what has been clicked and display its menu (and/or other info - even if that fills in asynchronously).
