GALNET Audio - Devs, Why are You Crippling this New Feature?

Dear Devs,

I love the new GALNET audio feature and GALNET in general. On the release of 3.0, there were several interesting articles about the origins of the Frame Shift Drive, the Pilot's Federation, and the Alliance in addition to other interesting news articles. Less than a week later, all of those articles are no longer in GALNET to view and/or listen! GALNET in-game article history used to go back further than it does now. This much narrower window really hurts GALNET and GALNET audio.

I had hoped the amount of articles retained would actually increase, instead of decrease, so that - given time - we could listen to GALNET audio for quite a bit of time in-game, like a radio station. Instead, this small window of active article retention really hurts the feature.

Yes, I know I can go out of game and read all GALNET articles on the web. However, you should seriously consider permanently retaining articles in-game with valuable lore like the three examples I listed above - maybe even have a different section for that news.

Anyway, loving 3.0 so far... just wish GALNET audio wasn't losing content so quickly.

I'm pretty sure the window has always been one month. I do wish they would make certain articles more permanent though, I also really enjoyed those lore articles.

GalNet 'trail' has always been short. I think now we have audio, we need more content, I agree. Certainly longer archive, more user stories.

They should use it to read aloud the forum threads. Imagine listening to an hysterical 44-page discussion on combat logging, griefing, money-making exploits, or the perceived lack content, etc, while flying through the endless void. Pure bliss :)

I love the new Gallnet but yeh...not being utilized to its full potential at all (heopefully in the works??) ...Also..why not use the same tech to read Mission Objectives too in the transactions tab? The audio logs are what the games missing right now and it seems like the work is allready done so...just do what this guy says Frontier.

And for the love of god..stick a pilot avatar in the empty seat if you have a ship launched fighter. Will take you 3 minutes.

Cheers.

They plan to extend voice synth usage. GalNet audio is just first step.

My guess - and this is only a guess based on playing around with Amazon Polly, which uses the same Ivona voice voices/tech that Galnet audio is using - is that they have to type in the text for the audio separately, phonetically spelling out things that don't automatically read correctly as written normally. There was a lot of mispronunciation on the articles in Beta, while all the ones live have been spot on.

I would also guess the reduced history is due to the extra space these articles now take up in the client. Again, only a guess. I'm just really upset that three of the best, most informative articles I've ever seen/heard in Galnet were only in-game for 4-5 days!

Those "origins" news articles were ancient. Loved that they were in audio form and completely baffled as to why they've disappeared.

I was not aware they were that old. They really should keep these in the in-game GalNet, perhaps under a different folder, in perpetuity. Then again, maybe they're going to do this in Q4 when we get our own personal codex/lore record.

If I can find the right software to do it (it looks like Amazon really wants people to use their Polly service rather than separate software), I'd do this myself. Listening to "Amy" (voice GalNet Audio (and Subnautica's PDA) uses) read the forums, would be a treat!

Afaik FD integrated into game instead of using cloud service. But I might be wrong.

I LOVE Galnet Audio as a feature and yes Frontier, please add more content. New content being read out here could be a really huge win for the game. "Please sir, can we have some more?"

If you want to listen to old Galnet articles and you have Windows 10, there is a way. The website at https://community.elitedangerous.com/en/galnet has most of the articles back to 5th Jue3301. Tab out of Elite: Dangerous and open a page in Microsoft Edge - for example https://community.elitedangerous.com/en/galnet/06-JUN-3301 - highlight the text you want read, right-click anywhere on the page except the highlighted text a choose "Read Aloud". Now tab back into the game and the illusion is complete. Until you get to the end of the page.

The Chrome browser has an add-on to do this as well, which I've used and works well.
Firefox has add-ons for this as well but I haven't used any of them
