GALNET - Prototype Frame Shift Drive almost production ready, competitor sceptical - 04 APR 3310

Am I the only one who, based on the Galnet article and other circumstancial evidence, thinks that this prototype module is in fact heavily narrative driven and therefore not expected to be perfect at launch, but that will be improved over time?

The idea of faster SC is neat, but my guess is that the wonkiness and extreme heat have been exaggerated intentionally. And the module being from a new manufacturer means that the engineers don't know anything about it, yet, hence the lack of engineering.

It all makes sense, under this perspective.
I'm guessing it will become much smoother in future.

My few short tests.
When my friend was at 200C in cutter I was at 700 in krait.
When I was in krait we did race at distance of 15k ls.
I think that I was behind like 3k ls when he did emergency drop around our destination XD
My krait needed:
15 seconds to build 100% heat
23 seconds to build 180% (low grade overcharge, btw)
I neede like 1 minute to visit megaship 10k ls away.
2 minutes to visit binary star 60k ls away.
So, at least for me- heat isn't issue. Fuel consumption will require fitting additional fuel tank for savety (and maybe scoop). Much better acceleration, speed and possibility to escape gravity wells, even just to build velocity far from any bodies are nice things to have.
Longer cruises will require few shorter boosts instead 1 long.
Even my typical mission runner can hit 20 range, what is...well, enough for BGS.
Exploration...I think that some ships could hit low 30s with it. so if such range isn't issue for someone it sounds like good idea, if he want to visit this all planets 100k ls away.
For other ships...sounds like perfect opportunity for exploration with carrier, where you explore your own mini bubble, than move few thousands lys and repeat.

Sadly, it does not appear as though you can engineer the SCO Drive.

At least currently . . . .

Parked at Deciat, and the option to engineer is not available.

. . . . I was thinking Shielded with Thermal Spread :-(

The Guardian FSD range booster does increase range though.

O7 CMDRs

The thing that gets me, is the steering is jacked up, the same way it is when you scooping a neutron star. So in addition to the massive heat generation and damage, insane fuel usage, you can't actually steer, which of course costs you precious seconds of damage and fuel.

facepalm Man, Fdev, you really know how to take a cool idea and just wreck the hell out of it.

I'll pass by again, when you come up with the CG that will act as the 'lore' reason you have to re-balance the drive.

Inara lacks a "Min ls to station " search field... only max. So i need to get a bit more creative looking for the next Rhea.

Yep... for anyone taking an FC out for exploration, this should be a big increase to DSS times, low range ship with heatsinks and fuel tanks will make short work of anything.

So in addition to the massive heat generation and damage
Idk man, my ship needed 40 SECONDS to 300% of heat.
+I can do it without ANY heat damage if I will use 15 second bursts.
Maybe don't use 2D overcharged plants, or something 🤷‍♂️
+you definetely can navigate, because...actually...I'm doing some missions in spicy system with secondary star 60k ls away rn and it works XD
Additional little detail: smaller ships are faster BUT more difficult in handling.

This little thing...in courier it example was 0,67. And I know, how my krait handle, and I seen how my friend's courier handle.
Difference was massive.

Actually I like next thing in this overcharge-it require at least minimal amounts of "git gudium", it seems XD

The more I think of it, the more I'm convinced that it is all intentional, and upcoming events and CGs will be aimed at improving it to its final form.

This is basically the start of a narrative testing phase.

People keep asking for public testing, etc.
There it is.
The only critique could be that it's not being advertised as such, but would that be required?
The hints on Galnet are clear enough (in my opinion).

It just dawned on me... Fuel Rats life got a bit easier on those "I've slept while flying and I'm (obscene distance) from the arrival star, help" cases. Or harder, since balancing the fuel used to reach the rescuee would be necessary (and the lower jump range makes the travel a bit harder). And the shaking makes reaching the target harder when they can't have the waypoint always active (cases when the target is on last fumes).

Unlikely to help much with very long supercruise distances because of the enormous fuel consumption.

Could perhaps help with medium-length distances, like 1 kls - 100 kls, because the overcharging allows getting to full supercruise speed from near the entry star very fast.

yeah that's what I'm starting to think. That the drive is purposefully sh**y, because "after all, it's a prototype."

I know people are suffering through to make it work, but still, just out the gate with all these "issues"

I think my main gripe is the fuel usage. Heat management can be engineered, so there is at least SOME control we have there. But the fact we can't fix the fuel usage, is what aggravates me.

And as this is a prototype, who is to say that a more refined, improved drive version will not be available after some time has passed?

Sorry I don't know if this engine will help against ganking, but I want to know if this engine will help while flying to the Thargoid vortex ?

I'll test the heat generation on my krait, right now I'm only going on what I'm hearing from people. At least the heat issue can be engineered away, to some extent. But the fuel usage, right now there isn't anything for that, and I'm not breaking my build to start carrying extra fuel tanks.

Now I can see the utility for AX builds, and to be honest, I think they came up with this to address the fact that a couple of the Titans are several kLs away from the primary. But Explorers, which granted, no one ever said this was meant for them. I'm curious how useful if at all this will be for exploration.

Probably not since it is a C class drive and Explorers usually pride themselves on fitting an A class into essentially a flying gas can.

If anything it will probably help gankers close the gap with you faster. Since you can't use the drive after you've had an interdiction start.
