Game Bashing On Steam

In spite of the CEO of the company coming out and saying 'Sorry, we fornicated the pooch on this one', followed subsequently by another statement of 'Yeah, turns out it's so fornicated that we don't have a hope of making it work on consoles', some people still believe that negative reviews are fake.

Tribal people gonna be tribal 🤷‍♂️

But some people who like it equate their personal taste in media to be a reflection of their personality and identity. Therefore, if you attack the piece of media, you're attacking them as a person. So they have to take it personally.

Some people get very worked up about their 'identity'.

I dated a professional dominatrix for a while - the people who had the biggest issue with her were, surprisingly, those in the BDSM community for whom that aspect of their life was their primary identity. They were very offended by her making money from what they considered their 'lifestyle'. But, as she so eloquently put it, "They're always in the front row drooling when I do a show"

Doesn’t life usually finish that up for you by your early 20s? For current space games, exposure to the x series should do it. “Picking” elite doesn’t make special.

Oh wait there are people who have never played Tie Fighter or any of the totally games sims here right? that probably explains another difference of perspective from me. Tie Fighter wipes with the floor with elite on everything.. yeah if you haven’t played it elite is probably much better in your eyes sure. It still holds up today if you can bear the graphics just saying…

Skippy goes WHACK! :D

I blame console playing Star Citizen players for the review bombing!!!

Or maybe it's Chris Roberts and Ian Bell joining forces to have revenge!

Or it's Hello games or Egosoft trying to control the universe!

Feel free to add your own suspects for the review bombing!

Re Steam reviews there is also a quite interesting bit of info in that the base game (+Horizons) gets 7-8 times more reviews than EDO in any given month, and they have been consistently 80%+ positives for a very long time and... there are a few of those reviews that mention the EDO first person element positively in their score comment text.

In other words, there are many players who prefer to score the overall game, including EDO, at 80%+ and do it at the main game score page, not the EDO DLC one. Possibly players that buy the Commander Premium edition with all DLCs for example or players that for whatever reason prefer not to do a distinction with DLCs.

When FD merges EDO into EDH the EDO page on Steam, and it's reviews, will be deleted anyway.

Tie Fighter - and I think the best for that era, Freespace 2 - has the really big advantage over Elite (any version!) that the size classes of ships really make a difference to how they fit in, as opposed to Elite where a Cutter is basically just a bigger Imp Eagle (to the extent of being parts-compatible)

FS2 especially got the large ships right by giving them effective anti-fighter point defense in their own right so they weren't totally reliant on their own fighters to screen them. That sort of weapon and scenario balance with something like Elite's flight model would be amazing on the combat side (and self-contained enough that it might not fall into the "always a year from release" trap of more ambitiously-scoped space games)

I'd only add that the Steam review system encourages good or bad reviews and therefore forces those who may lie somewhere between into one of those two positions, no nuance to be had.

I don't think I've ever reviewed ED for that reason.

TBH this is our society all-over these days.

"Here's an opinion which differs from mine. I know from my social media echo chambers that all right-thinking people agree with me, so this aberrant opinion must be fake/extremist/fascist/axe-grinding".

Try posting a moderate comment on a left-wing or right-wing opinion piece on Facebook.

The simple situation here is that some people really like ED, some played it for a while but went off it, and some disliked it from the off. The same applied to EDO, maybe in different proportions. When motivated to do so, these categories of people tend to give different reviews.

It shouldn't be, since EDO will keep being sold. Horizon was included into the base game entirely for free, but EDO will not (at least for now).
The client will be merged, but it you don't own EDO you won't be able to do the Odyssey content.

I left a negative review on Steam after engineers for the base game. One "fan" felt compelled to try and argue with me so I deactivated the commenting function. Some people just cand stand when someone disagrees. It's quite toxic.

That's quite interesting. Because some people who don't like it feel personally attacked by FDEV.

The thing about steam reviews (especially with MMOs) are they're only good as the last update. So if you have a bad update, you'll get people with thousands of hours of playtime, giving it a negative review.

Odyssey deserved to be panned when it was originally released but does it deserve the same rating after update 11? Personally I don't think so. Can you imagine what the response would have been if Odyssey had been released in this condition? However there are so many people that feel annoyed by the original release, they won't give it a second chance or change their review. You have to remember that it took NMS FIVE years, to turn around it's abysmal launch into positive reviews.

The other issue is the January/February 'Quiet Time' and the console version being cancelled really has done a number on 'changing player sentiment' mentioned in the year end report. Steam numbers are now half what they were at this point last year (Before Odyssey), so I'm hoping that fdev have something special up their sleeve and put it out soon.

NMS took two extra years to become acceptable, by the third year it got good and by now people feel it's an outstanding experience (despite the fact I hate the flight model and not HOTAS support). I'm just hoping that fdev will continue to support Elite/Odyssey in the same way.

Someone make me a modern version of the classic Tie fighter game ....

And added X-wing/rebel missions, and perhaps an option to be a trader running things for both sides (and being very careful not to be found out) and also a criminal gang option...

<<looks at the pile of money he'd part with for THAT game :D

Bill

<<remembering the good old days of flying a tie advanced and yelling "die rebel scum" :D

I'll just be a "tier-(&&" and just go defender all the way. I remember the first time sitting in that and being deer in headlights reading the instruments on the panel at how awesome that thing was.

How about a lotor style decade long reenactment of the zahn trilogy, including an option to smuggle for either faction as it was. Something like that. Squadrons missed the point on so many levels.. i really wanted to like that.

Yeah there was something about actually flying for an empire, plus the gameplay was so good.. after every awing kill was rebel skumming alot myself.

I must admit, SW:Squadrons does make a good go of it. The single player campaign is a little short but I love fleet battles.

It made it worse for me. It basically was "If only we had known it wouldn't work well for some people, anyway it works great on my old pc so whatevs."

It sounded very much like he was talking over the community to the shareholders. "The problems aren't widespread, we did our work properly, I tested it myself on some old decrepit pc and it is fine."

No David: they are, you guys didn't, you did not and it doesn't. It was an even sleazier version of "I am sorry to hear you are so easily offended." kinda faux-apology.
That sounds like fake news to me. There were no performance problems with Odyssey at launch. Some players experienced "connectivity issues". /s
