I'm expecting several announcements today

1) Planet landings phase 1 ( limited planet types only) for Xmas. Other planet types coming next year
2) beta release of PC/Mac CQC today.
3) Mac/PC CQC is cross play between XBox and PC (tah-da!)

Prepare to be 2/3 disappointed! maybe even 3/3.

Devs hve answered some questions about that, and walking on stations/ships is far far away, a long term update.

I hope It`ll be PL, not the PL we all are looking for, but a first approach to an interactive universe. Now we just have the space, nor the galaxy. The galaxy includes planets, space debris, etc. Not just stations.

I was thinking yesterday about asteroid fields, they are useless now except for mining. I hope FD will add some stuff to asteroid fields, like you have to go "there" for "something", and fly across rocks. I love doing that but... no objective now :S

Pirate/secret government/guerrilla stations set inside of larger asteroids within a belt would be pretty darn awesome.

What if basic PL, landing on airless moons, no atmospheric flight, is not an expansion? Just a thought. The full PL expansion would be down the road with fully generated cities and the like, but, in the meantime, everyone would get to land on the Moon (and other like bodies)...making that PL expansion all the more tempting for those who don't have the pass.

Perfectly plausible 'for the good of the game'. But FD have made it very clear that they want cash, please, and are prepared to lose and/or annoy their existing player base to chase after a new one. So I expect another cash cow unveiling.

The difficulty they have, if they are really going to do planetary landings in stages as per DBOBE's comments during the kickstarter, is how they get players to stump up for a partial implementation (the old evolutionary argument about what use is half a wing). Yeah, mechanically, they can easily say that you buy the expansion and then get free updates to it, like the main game. Those that are happy with the current state of the game will buy that. Those that are waiting for content will probably keep waiting. So I would actually be not at all surprised if the first release of planetary landings went far beyond the 'airless moons' comment from the kickstarter.

Exactly, and to be honest what's the point of PL is we cant walk out of our ship. Thats why I think it will be not PL yet, could be ability to cruise in atmosphere, but not reaching the surface.

Why land at a station if you can't walk around?

A huge number of the station names/locations have existed since the Amiga days. Don't see why they can't start adding the ground ones.

Everybody is waiting for planetary landings but i have a feeling it wont be that.

Well, they have said it is a surprise, so you could be right. But having ruled out most of the 'obvious' other things it could be, it pretty much just leaves something from out in left field in the way that powerplay was.

Dont forget that the of the planets in ED arent inhabited or just have simple bases. I am pretty sure that they can "easily" implement those if airless moons are possible. The problem is not to give us pretty highmaps (the surface) and shiny atmospheric effects. The real deal are surely the earthlike planets with comlex lifeforms and cities. These are of course far of. But planets like venus or mars... why not?

And to the "to much hype here" ppl : Frontier set this bar with their "Colossal Announcement" Announcement. So blame them, not us.

OK here is my guess since we are close now.

Planetary landings coming by xmas. Yes I hear you all say, we all think that.

Big surprise though is Alpha test starting today. It is such a big thing maybe it needs a proper test cycle and there must be a reason why they re-opened the Alpha backers forum when the game launched :)

Just FYI, Mars has tons of cities in this game, it resembles Earth since it has been terraformed.

If it is planetary landings (I hope not at this point) then what will the point be as walking around you ship (and I guess walking around in general) is so far down the line.

I hope they announce a proper exploring system with something to do and a proper mining system with player driven economy/market.

Aujourdhui it is the big day and the forums are going to be on the boil, regardless of the result of the announcement

I sometimes catch myself looking up at the Moon, remembering the changes of fortune in our long voyage, thinking of the thousands of people who worked to bring the three of us home. I look up at the moon and wonder, when will we be going back, and who will that be?
