Gamescom 2018

Its a shame Nvidia don't focus on actual real world performance metrics with the new card. Who cares about niche RTX features when we really need to know how it performs against its older GTX 10x series siblings (something that was totally missing).

ED pulls a Half Life 1 trick in that it looks and runs well on all machines. If it ever went the way of Star Citizen and became graphics intensive it would become a niche of a niche.

Yup, the ray tracing stuff is cool and it'll be interesting to see what the gaming industry comes up with to take advantage of it (although I'd have thought it would be better suited to more traditional close environment games like racing sim's and first person shooters than ED where the nearest light source is 5000ls away) but I agree - I'll be interested to see comparisons of traditional GPU benchmarks rather than new "Gigaray" statistics. I guess 2080 vs 1080 comparison reviews will be appearing soon(tm).

Agreed, I'll be considering getting a 2070 when I buy a new desktop gaming computer near the end of the year. I'll keep an eye out for performance comparisons.

Nvidia is always known going for 'paying big bucks for something that they told you looks cool' for last 5 years. That's their marketing and development strategy. That's why I see RTX a bit of meh. Call me when such card will be able to ray trace open look from ED ship with three planets and star in background without any trickery. It will take some time to get there.

isnt that what LOD settings are for?
if you have the machine to do it you get the gravy and turn it to 11

if not then you choose your settings accordingly.

that is one of the advantages of PC.

The big announcement is today or tomorrow?

The EliteMeet with Frontier is at 8pm tonight where I believe they'll make a short Beyond presentation to the gathered fans. I dare say some tweets and forum posts will come shortly after from some of those present and then I think FD will be posting something about it tomorrow. I wouldn't expect much, it's not a full blown presentation like they did at Lavecon but perhaps just a few sneak peeks and reveals.
