It didnt happened to me, but it happens to a LOT of people, specially in some places around europe/USA/brAZIl and other countries like that that are in the 4th world.
You cannot get more real than that. Anyhow, there should be a possibility to make NPC's escort you with your own ships, at certain elevated cost, so people won't be able to abuse it.

That sounds like a fun idea. Hire npc wings. They take a cut of the profit or something. Of course if you had friends that'd be better lol.

NPC wings would not be OP or anything like that, I mean, you get silly NPC's that at least make your trip less lonely... And also you have to pay for all of that, insurance and everything... They are YOUR fleet...
I mean, us, people who has no friends for the moment, are at BIG disadvantage to gankers/griefers alike that DO have friends...

Just go out and make friends. There are so many groups, squadrons and players out there for everyone to find similar playstyles & characters like you.
Some friends I have from PG. Some from hauling stuff. Some from flying in Res sites and CZs. Some from PvP. Some from roleplay. Some even from getting ganked.
