GCS Sarasvati - early Thargoid lookout megaship

If this ship was sent out as an early warning system, then any others could be in any direction. I'd find it more likely that other such ships would not be in that area, but rather more directly spinward, trailward, rimward, upward, or downward.

That however would be a truly vast search area. I would think finding other beacons and messages might be a better way forward.

I've had a bit of a poke around but my search has been by no means exhaustive.

The Hind nebula still seems really likely to me but I haven't found anything yet.
I would be amazed if there's anything space based in the Hind Nebula, considering the Asteroid Base there the system has been visited a lot this last year.

The clue to Sarasvati was supposed to come from an LP (edit, at Jotunheim 7A). There should be more LPs pointing to the other Equinox/Thunderchild units, and those LPs will be nearer to Sol in a smaller volume to search. How about listing the systems within a shell (say 20 ly thick) the same radius as that LP? The shell thickness could be rduced if too many systems produced, or vice versa.

Wasn't the Thunder Child from H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds? It got blown up by martians while trying to protect a refugee rescue fleet of civilian vessels.

Perhaps this is an allusion to that? Rescuing Civilians from aliens, etc.
Thunderchild succeeds in defeating Martian fighting machines long enough to let the civilians escape before herself being destroyed, it is the only recorded instance in the tale of humans "winning" against the Martians.
She was an Ironclad torpedo ram - the Royal Navy's "real life" equivalent was HMS Polyphemus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Polyphemus_(1881) ) - I'd be very interested in anything carrying the name Polyphemus we might find in game , would be an interesting easter egg.

Could also be a reference to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Thunder_Child which frankly seems more likely.
I'd be very surprised if that didn't draw from the HG Well's Thunderchild for it's name all things considered.

edit - now if we get a station attacked at some point - how cool would it be for Thunderchild to warp in and hold them off long enough for it to be evacuated ?

Ya worth a shot .... Im back exploring the moon right now... Just checking there isnt a corrisponding installation on the surface.

All well and good, but the fact we've got a listening post thinking for itself, doesn't really add to a ship coming in helping an evacuation. We're not exactly short of ships.

It's clearly something else than a reference to War of the Worlds ironclad.

It's a bit heavy, tbh. I've done a 20 ly shell and zoned and sorted it so the 139s are near the top. Importing to Google lost all the smart data column trickery, unfortunately.

I thought that a search shell for LPs might be much smaller, with a lot fewer systems than your Equinox shell, but seeing the slow rate it scrolls down on my ipad screen I'm not sure. Will check later on the PC

Edit: 8443 systems? Well, I think Achenar could be immediately ruled out as any LP would have been immediately found. It's still a helluva long list!

Want to add another column for "searched" & make it editable so we can contribute?

Edit2: Interesting, just checked my EDD history & I was in Jotunheim on 6th September. I would have checked out an LP, so I wonder if it was just added with 2.4 (26 September)

I suppose Sirius might still be deploying LPs but you'd expect new ones to be further out.

I got distracted by Taurus Dark but I think I'll head back and check a few of those systems out.

It auto-saves. Your changes are there :)
a thought has occured to me while getting absolutely bored travelling 300-500ls to secondary stars in the vain hope of finding a listening post. The Equinox shell is from Galcop days, so centred on Sol, but the LP that detected Sarasvati is probably one of the hundreds that Sirius Corp recently sent out around the galaxy (though I suspect mainly around the bubble)- so the Jotunheim shell should be centred on Sirius rather than Sol. Don't expect it will make much difference to the list but it might be significant.

And do we have any indication why the LPs were sited where they are- might help to cut down the search space

Hah, I know what you mean. While I was cruising back and forth last night I started to wish I'd never suggested it :D

I think the range of search radius would be quite a bit thicker than we are searching, too, as I doubt they'd be that precise in locating LPs. Maybe there are other patterns in the LP locations chosen by Galcop or Sirius (let's face it, FDev)
