Modes Get off Solo/Private groups and onto Open play!

JEEZ It never ends. I play solo and at times with friends in PG. Open has nothing to offer me. 20-30 years ago I enjoyed pvp online, not so much anymore.

I partly agree, i would love some more danger in anarchy systems. I still would play in solo though, since the AI dont tend to gank players (and as sayed, i play this as a solo game anyway). I would not mind some fights against npcs in deep space.

I doubt FD would make it as difficult as players ganking up in their maxed out PvP ships though, as it would pretty much kill exploration which is a huge part of this game.

Than again, i dont know your mom or the moms of FDevs. So, who knows? :p

And again, if you want the brutal, hardcore, die and lose everything play i suggest Eve Online. I played that for years, made my way through 0.0, lived solo in a wormhole for 6 month (and earned Plex money there for the two accounts) etc. But this is not the game, this is IMHO about something else.

The only thing that is more hardcore in EVE are the rebuy costs. It's much easier to be safe in Eve if you know what you are doing.

Coming back to ED. Dangerous anarchy systems make no gameplay sense without higher rewards in them and this would mean a change of the design philosophy of the game.

I've never been in a pvp situation that I couldn't just jump away from
Which means PvP is essentially wasting your time, rather than adding anything. While being in a private group, you could have all the socialisation you want with players consenting to not-PvP.

I've understood from previous discussions that properly coding a PvE flag by controlling all damage effects is a major job and would be bug-prone. However, as a software writer I would take a different and much simpler approach. Simply, when I get the rebuy screen saying "You were destroyed by CMDR Bloggs", I pay my rebuy but Bloggs gets banned from Open for a week at the same time.

An even easier solution would be to gradually place all PvPers into the Shadow-ban version of Open :D
Eventually they'd all be instancing and fighting amongst themselves, but without any "Open PvE" players, and neither side would know. Everyone is just selecting "Open" at the main menu, but PvE players get proper Open, while PvPers get shuffled off to Shadow-Open.
Much like match-making in other games: push people together who play alike; don't instance people with different skill levels.

Just hypothetically pondering, I am a 90% Open player, and have no particular issues with the current state (but do hope for crime and punishment, and a bit more logic to how security works etc).

I prefer to play the game the way I want to play, not play the game the way others think I should play. If I wanted to play in open, I would be playing there, If I was forced to play in open, I wouldnt be here. Call it whatever you want. Im sure someone will.

Besides the OP there was a second short comment after that but from there on: silence.
Strong indicators of a troll post...
agree. Suspect now that the Op wasn't for the intent of discussing open/pg/solo but rather just to stir the pot. Not enough to grief players in game, but to grief them in the forum.

Either this or just the common 'bragging through the backdoor' aka: 'hey mom, look what a real man I am, got the balls to fly in open' while pretending to proselytise the clueless masses. Unfortunately no one was impressed... [haha]
And on top of that, I actually do play in Open sometimes, in my second account. It's dedicated for that. Flying a sidey and don't care if it blows up by some sociopathic griefer. My first account is dedicated to exploration and trading and such, and it's such a waste to lose money just to satisfy some teenagers wet dream of killing fish in a barrel with a shotgun. To pick your fights, and use the tools to your advantage, shows intelligence, not fear and not paranoia, but true wisdom and intelligence. So to play in Solo, PG, or Open depending on what your goals are, that's being strategic.

After browsing through this umpteenth thread about open being the one and only heaven for Elite players I'm under the impression now that it wasn't a total waste of time: If I can learn something from it then that all the different modes are pretty much working as intended and have all a good reason to exist. :)

p.s. Oh wait, Solo mode is - of course - the one and only true mode to play Elite! :p[haha]
Strange that such a funny thread with that title/statement doesn't exist - yet...
Probably because those who play in Solo are more "open" minded and can and do play in both Open and Solo. ;)

I might give open a try since there are now more penalties for griefing by NPC police. I saw a thread with a PvPer complaining about rebuy costs (which seem small compared to my last game, EVE) so perhaps criminals (which I might become) might have to plan their gankfests more carefully. Made me smile. Open looks a tiny bit better now. :) If they made Powerplay require you to be in open then I might be even more tempted to play there all the time.

I agree the overwhelming majority of my ED experience has been in open and being ganked is extremely rare (probably more if you head to CGs all the time etc.). I've met some great commanders. The new punishments might help but also I think it would be great if we could communicate more easily with commanders nearby.

For example sending a distress signal - heard within x ly to alert all nearby commanders. Would this lead to people setting traps? Clearly but it would still be cool.
You'd clearly have to be able to mute it too to stop people spamming.
At the moment space is so big and we spend so little time in each system it's quite difficult to "bump into" other commanders (good or bad - in spirit and the type of commanders).

I've been hoping for some sort of "station bar"/"chatroom" for a while - so you could talk to other people docked in a station (in relative safety) I suspect this is one of the features people think will come with spacelegs but it's not actually dependent on that. (Obviously once/if we do you will hopefully have this as an option - and the safety will be dependent on the security of the station).

I already play in Open. However since I’m in the Asia-Pacific region, I’m quite likely to never see y'all anyway. Doesn’t bother me one bit.

- get destroyed by some idiots for no good reason
- be angry because you can't find a target in a RES during a CG
- enjoy all the lags and network errors
- wait 10 minutes for a landing pad before you realise they are all AFK

No thanks. I would probably play in a pure RP mode though.
