Newcomer / Intro Getting Raw Materials in My SRV

BTW, can't you still get materials from the barnacle forests or have those been nerfed/removed? I remember last year when I was grinding mats for engineering it was pretty effective to just mow down barnacles, pick up the mats, relog to respawn the forest, rinse, repeat. Is that no longer an option?

Doesn't work like that, AFAIK. The barnacles still do have mats, of course, but once "harvested" they need to regrow over time. Logging won't work, anymore.

What I'm wondering is, are there terrain features I should look for to get the most materials (like maybe landing inside a crater)?

Do the colors on the planet tell me anything?
If that's not the way it is, then it should be !

Indeed it should, and they are working on it. Maybe part of the exploration upgrade at the end of the year

There is a bit of a conundrum there though. Apart from outcrops (where material colour in the locale should / could be indicative of composition) you have a problem with meteorites. A meteorite doesn't decide whether it is going to prefer to land on a green or pink area - the only way colours could show perhaps a reduced incidence of meteorites would be if that colour represented a resurfacing (e.g. lava flow, crater formation and ejecta, etc) and so had subsumed pre-existing meteorites on the surface.

(I am not going to touch on "terrain" types as it always bothered me that metallic meteorites are supposedly more abundant in rugged terrain as I can find no logical argument to support that. )

I can attempt to give you both real life (lore friendly) and meta gamey arguments, if you want.
1) Geological-ish lore version: "Rugged terrain" means that the particular part of the surface undergoes much less erosion and other terrain-changing activity. Therefore meteorites remain on the surface longer, therefore there is more of them.
2) Gamey version: It is customary in general gaming, that harder-to-get-to places yield better rewards. :D
