Or maybe it's more like, I'm an Elf with special bow skills but Kurniax, who drops a +9 Bow of Wondrous Penetration can only be defeated by a mounted knight in heavy armor with a lance, at which point he will he will get a weapon that's all but useless to him, oh and it's untradeable.
yes, that would be the special dualEngineered DSS - an exploration focussed item.
Which a FSD isnt, its an item every char can wear and increases its running speed, nothing more nothing less

You forgot the part where it's time-limited, and where it's also a competition with other players. So to borrow Rudi Raumkraut's words: "I want this special breastplate , which only drops from Kurniax The 3rd, raidboss of The Dark Stinky Caverns, and only from 2020. November 12 to November 19, and I have to kill him faster than 75% of the other players who also killed him, otherwise I can't get this breastplate, and it's more powerful than any breastplate you can get. Oh, but since so many people are killing him so often, the event will end early, so it's actually from November 12 to November 15!"
If you can't see the problems with this, well, that's on you: this question has come up with MMOs, and history shows that handing out overpowered items exclusively during a one-off time-limited event is a terrible idea that always backfires.
Maybe we'll all be able to get these later, maybe not. People have asked Frontier about this, and they chose not to say anything on the subject yet. But well, as you can see even in this thread, there has already been damage.

Well, if I only can enjoy the game with this explicit Breastplate I know what I have to do, rules are given
I can always choose to skip it and live with that leather harnish

I can see how some people make it to a problem, which happens regularily since the dev of MMOs
The "damage" you mention imo isn't done with this optional item (although it could have been the bone of contention)
Still, its real, thats the sad part of this story, and I should stop derailing it with discussion about principles
So only explorers use a DSS? I have news for you! A DSS, while it can and is used by explorers, can also be used by everyone else. You think a long range FSD isn't explorer focussed?

You quoted a DSS as explorer focused for engineering, well here's more news, any DSS will enable you to scan a planet and get the bonus, any level DSS, I have a few ships on my FC with unengineered DSS's and guess what? They work fine, but if you are short 5ly on your FSD you are out of luck, you can't do it, no matter how hard you try. And people in the bubble? A non-double engineered FSD will get them anywhere, worst scenario in the bubble is they might have to do "1" extra jump to get where they are going. So how is long range FSD nto explorer focused if they are the only ones it seriously affects if they don't have the extra jump range.
Long range FSD's are uniquely explorer focused, no other style of play can make proper use of a double engineered FSD, any old basic or even un-engineered FSD will do. I traveled from the bubble to Colonia in a 17ly unengineered ship, but I can't go to Beagle Point in the same ship without engineering the FSD.
Tbh I don't see any problem with "special" fsd, additional 5-10 range? Great, but even with it ships have smaller range than carrier.
This additional range is as important for me, that after reading galnet I said "meh, time to explore some new systems"

I have news for you! You are wrong. Combat oriented players like to have fast boot on their FSD for reasons. This will greatly limit jump capacity on a ship. My Chieftain for instance, which is a decent jumper can only jump 9 ly because a fast boot FSD. Now with the dual engineered fsd I can get 20-25 LY AND have a fast boot. Which is 'needed' cause my power envelope is such that I can not deploy my weapons without shutting down modules. My FSD is in priority group 5. The biggest advantage with this FSD is in fact not for exploration but for combat ships. If you want to jump +80 ly you get a paper conda. There is a max jump range in the game which is only available on one ship. Now if the dbx with the dual FSD takes the crown, then this is still the new maximum. And good luck finding a situation where 82Ly is not enough but 84 is. (yes, with a neutron that give you 8 LY extra). You seem to forget the carriers can jump 500 ly.
This "discussion" has pulled this thread way of the subject, which is the cataloguing of the HIP stars and adding them to EDSM, I will no longer be responding to any off topic posts.

I have managed to create a system for updating the main HIP spreadsheet with data downloaded from EDSM (actually systems.csv from EDDB)
Hopefully this will replicate what Jackie Silver has done previously, and our efforts of visiting all the HIP stars will again be reflected in the spreadsheet.
I intend to update sheet 2 of the spreadsheet with the progress of each slice as before.
What I can't do is edit the OP to show who is doing which slice, but this can be reflected in sheet 2.
The system requires a bit more testing, but I am confident I can get it working in the next few days.
I will post here when the spreadsheet has been updated, and you can let me know if there are any problems.
PS My main fear is scrambling the spreadsheet. Obviously I have a copy, but I don't know if I can replace the main SS if it gets corrupted.

Good work there. I download a copy of the section of spreadsheet relevant to my slice and sort it by distance, that will probably be the main danger in corrupting the main spreadsheet, an accidental miss-sort. In the long run it doesn't really matter that much because the data is stored in EDSM and the data file can always be parsed again to regenerate the spreadsheet.

Mostly true, but there is a lot of HIP catalogue data in the spreadsheet that is not in EDSM. For example the mapping between HIP and HD numbers.
That is quite important for auto-matching names between EDSM and the SS. I suppose it is possible to recreate the SS from my full copy anyway.
I took a new download of everything over the weekend, and found there are still 16632 HIP stars outstanding, and 546 of those have been visited since the last update which I think Jackie did on the 7th November.

The last 4 in particular felt they might've been reachable but I saw no path.
There is 1 phantom system, where the galmap moves when you search for it but stops at nothing (and not because it's out of bounds). I believe this is because the star is present in a close-by system but I did not put a lot of effort into hunting it:
HIP 54966
Everything else is in EDSM. Of those in EDSM, just 5 are not marked complete.
First off, V463 Carinae. This is a bubble system and is pre-discovered, which means the star can't be scanned. I didn't check if the bodies had all been mapped as far as EDSM was concerned.
Next, is g Carinae. I believe this is just EDSM mis-reporting. I previously mentioned it, but this system is duped in EDSM. Unfortunately, it appears the "bodyCount" for both systems is the same, which is incorrect. This means one of them is 400%+ scanned which is why it gets flagged.
Lastly, we have HIP 52199, HD 69262 and HIP 52992. These are systems I visited pre-FSS (and in fact pre-Journals). As a result, I can't scan the main stars and would need to map some of the other bodies, and so I can't mark them finished in EDSM. Can someone please visit and scan these 3 if you happen to be near them.
Name lookups and other data are in the worksheet here
OK. The spreadsheet is "live" again.
I have managed to update the spreadsheet with data from EDSM as of last night.
I learned quite a bit about the spreadsheet, including the fact that most of it is write protected, so I don't have to worry too much about scrambling it.
The bit that I update starts from row 91570 to row 118808, and columns Q to T.
If possible, could someone check that one of their recent finds has been updated.
As MattG has recorded in the previous post, there are a couple of ways that HIP stars don't end up in EDSM.
"not found" has been used in the ED name column of the spreadsheet to show that they don't exist in ED
"unreachable" has been used in the comments section as well.
I know from experience that updating the SS with this missing data can be tedious.
But what MattG has done by listing them (in spoilers) here suggests that it should be possible to incorporate "not found" and "unreachable" stars
into lists which can be incorporated into the update process. I know I have this data in my datasheets for sector 13, which I am currently exploring.
So, if anyone has "not found" and "unreachable" star lists that have not yet been entered into the spreadsheet, post them on here and I can pick them up.
(In two separate, identifiable lists please !)
Also, the same might be done for the "ED Names" (non HIP or HD names) which you might find during your bookmarking. I think these could be included in the update as well.
I will collect together my current list of non-HIP/HD names and post it soon(tm). This data is important because without it the name matching doesn't work.
As mentioned in my first post, I can't update the OP with the sector commanders, But any further sectors can be requested here and then put onto sheet 2 of the SS.

Hi MattG, did you check g Carinae for variations on the name? For instance G Carinae is not the same as g Carinae and this may be where EDSM has problems, it may be that one system, the actual Elite Galaxy, is differentiating for upper/lowercase and EDSM not and that's where EDSM gets confused. I will add your 3 pre-FSS systems to my bookmarks, they will eventually get scanned but I can't guarantee a time frame!
Ok added, they are 4kly behind me so I will get them on my swing to the bubble back to clear up my FC only candidates!
