Glorious HIPs - 3306

Here is the latest progress report. The delta completion is calculated from early June, which I think was the date of the last report.
Some good progress in quite a few slices, some slices not moving much. Overall completion is now 78.5%

Just checked the merged google spreadsheet to find out what is missing for 100% completion.
Here's what I found:

RowHIPHD
10385047603In-game-name should be HIP 47603
1039341985526913This is V891 Tauri, where Gal Map search (by HIP and HD) points to empty space next to V774 Tauri system. None of the 4 stars in V774 Tauri system has a HIP/HD number except the A star itself. Set to not found?
10397560178not found, propably didn't merge properly due to not having a HIP designation
1040855229992481In-game-name should be HD 92481
10420124555not found, propably didn't merge properly due to not having a HIP designation
10425913506approximate Z should be -2540
1042925405895789In-game-name should be HD 95789
10444571151not found, propably didn't merge properly due to not having a HIP designation

Thanks , I'll have a look at these. Most of the other slices close to 100% have similar issues, but I don't have time to sort them all out.

Once I've hit those last 6 systems, slices 30 and 31 will be complete...

Apologies for the delay and radio silence - RW gets in the damned way ;)

There are only 4 issues preventing the 100% completion of slices 25 and 26.
The 3 systems having HIP 0 or blank designations and HIP 19855.

In fact there are hundreds of blank HIP designations in the spreadsheet. But these normally have an HD designation which should(?) be picked up.
I'm not sure why we have empty HIP entries in an HIP catalogue. But I will look at the merge program to see why they are not being picked up from the HD number, and deal with them

And HIP 19855 , which is less than 1ly from V774 Tauri. I thought I would visit V774 Tauri and take a look. In fact in Odyssey, HIP 19855 is shown as normal to start with in the galmap, but you can't plot a route to it, even from close by. But you can select it as a target.
If you then try to jump to it, the game crashes ! I tried this with my alt account, and so far it has crashed again every time I start the game.
I will be sending a request for help to FD as my alt account is now unplayable.

Edit.... alt account is now usable, but jumping to HIP 19855 still crashes the game.

Hello Glorious HIPs

I'm not formally part of this but I did take a gander at the spreadsheet to see if there were any distant catalog stars along the way of my exploring the Elysian Shore, Formidine Rift, Kepler's Crest. I brought my fleet carrier along with me too, so I took the time to explore a few systems that require a fleet carrier to access. In the original post one of the benefits mentioned was the chance to find something new. I'm happy to say that I have found some interesting systems. These have been added to the EDSM database already.

HD 67924, HD 61207, HD 35001, HD 280252, HD 32316 - B class stars with at least one neutron star as a secondary star. Some of these are only stars, while others have a few planets around them.

HD 232489 - An B class star that had a helium rich gas giant in it. This system spawns outside of the center of the arms, which means it "overrode" whatever rules the non-catalog systems had on generating them.

HD 33299 - A K class supergiant.

HR 7940 - Contains a rare F1 Iab white supergiant as a secondary star.

HD 6182 - A B II supergiant...but it's only 2.5 solar radii so it's not very giant at all.

HD 4841 - A B5 I supergiant with a black hole companion. No other bodies in the system though.

HD 11092 - Found this one with a friend. It's a K4 II orange giant star that is 618 solar radii. This breaks the previous record for K class giants by over 200 solar radii and achieves a few things: 1) It's the largest known orange in the universe (woo!), 2) it's one of 18 stars to be larger than 500 solar radii, 3) it's the only one of the >500 solar radii stars that requires a fleet carrier to get to, as it's 400 ly from the nearest star, 4) it is the first star with spectral class K to be larger than 500 solar radii. Every other star is an M class giant, M class supergiant, or G class supergiant. HD 11092 is a K class giant (not supergiant).

Here is a screenshot so you can see the color of the star. It has a lone HMC (and 2 secondary stars) that the carrier automatically jumped to, giving a magnificent view of the star.

When I said hundreds, I meant 28. At least in the part of the spreadsheet dealing with our slices.

Of those 28, 26 are not in game with the HD numbers. (Didn't check any other catalogues)
I have added these 26 stars to the "not found" list

But these 2 are interesting ...
HD 11503 ename= Mesarthim B
HD 68256 ename= Tegmen C
They exhibit the same problem as HIP 19855, in that they are not immediately visible in the galmap, but if you put HD 11503 or HD 68256 into the galmap search they both come up. The route plotter fails to plot a course, but if you are close enough to set them as a jump target, the game crashes when you try to jump to them.

Hello Glorious HIPs,

It's me again. I have some information that might prove to be useful to your operations. In and of itself I think this info also has some fairly large ramifications.

A little context so that you see my line of thinking:

I was skimming the spreadsheets publicly available at Elite: Dangerous Astrometrics, precisely the "Catalog Systems (includes all non-procedural names)" spreadsheet, which, as the name suggests, is a spreadsheet containing over 100,000 stars in EDSM which do not follow the standard "Sectorname XX-X x#" format. This spreadsheet contains broad survey catalog stars, such as HIP, HD, HR; specfic survey catalog stars, such as 2MASS, Gliese, PSR; and named stars, such as Sol, Sirius, Colonia, Beagle Point, and Sgr A*. As with all player made tools, it is limited to stars part of the EDDN. When sorting the stars by distance you find the following as the most distant stars:

1629565172921.png

It's a bit complicated, but as you can see from the spreadsheet, you can see some historical POIs as well as some of the most distant catalog stars, such as Cygni X-3. Interestingly, the catalog stars are all binned into the same distance from Sol despite often being many thousands of light years apart. Special catalog stars, such as Cygni X-3, most PSR, and Greek named stars are typically rounded to a certain number of thousands of light years from Sol. This isn't always the case as you get closer but it seems to be the norm this far out. Note that many of the catalog stars are not actually visitable, but were simply added to EDSM using the distance submission method many years ago.

From this list you can find that HD 158320 is the most distant catalog star reachable. Every other star binned in the 40770 ly and 46594 ly distances are not reachable at all.

So, I looked in the Glorious HIPs spreadsheet to see what it had on HD 158320 and I came across this:

1629565572389.png

It had correctly shown its spectrum, name, name in elite, and even longitude. However, its distance is completely inconsistent with the game. 8358 ly is nowhere near what it is in Elite! This is the case with the overwhelming majority of the stars in the spreadsheet: The distance is inconsistent with what is in the game.

The spreadsheet uses HIP-2 from 2007, which is found on the ESA website here. If you take the time to look at the catalog, you will find that, indeed, the parallax of HIP 85641, or HD 158320 in game, is -0.39. This means that whatever script put the HIP catalog stars into Elite Dangerous used a different version of the catalog.

Long story short, I deduced that it was indeed another version of HIP-2 (not the outdated original HIP-1 from 1997), and that the correct numbers can be found using the VizieR tool. We find that the parallax for HIP 85641, or HD 158320 in game, is 0.08 mas (milliarcseconds). Ignoring the error bars, we simply compute 1 pc * 1000 * 0.08 mas = 40770 ly, which is exactly what it is in game.

I checked this using various other stars in Elite Dangerous and it worked every time. Of course, sometimes Elite Dangerous doesn't have these stars for unknown reasons if you try to copy the star from the catalog to the game.

So if 0.08 mas corresponds to 40770 ly, what corresponds to every other bin? Simply add or subtract 0.01 mas. Thus, 0.09 mas is 36240.4 ly, 0.1 mas is 32616.4 ly, and 0.07 mas is 46594.8 ly. Since the HIP-2 catalog only specifes parallax down to the hundredth, all the HIP stars are going to be binned in this nature.

Finally here comes the important findings. Using this method, I am able to copy the stars from the catalog into Elite Dangerous to see if they exist. We could do this with the 100,000+ entry Glorious HIP spreadsheet, but this lets me cherry pick what the most distant stars are, since the distances in the spreadsheet are inconsistent with the game. Using the VizieR tool I found every HIP star in ED that is 0.08 and 0.07 mas in parallax. They are as follows:

HIP 2454
HD 27199
HIP 45570
HD 87456
HD 98455
HIP 57951
HR 4644
HD 109038
HD 134156
HD 158320
HIP 107553
HD 207340
HD 35460
HD 65332
HD 98622
HD 133031
HD 158564
HIP 85994
HD 182374
HIP 105270

Now you may be wondering, are all of these stars far outside of the plane? The answer is, almost all of them, except the aforementioned HD 158320 (0.08 mas parallax) and a new star that was not in EDSM database before. That star is HD 158564, a K class giant star, which is further away than the previously mentioned HD 158320 since it has only 0.07 mas parallax. Every other star that is 0.07 mas parallax is too far away to reach.

Maybe you are wondering, what about lower parallax like 0.06, 0.05, etc. Will they be even further? I discovered that the game doesn't generate ANY of those stars ever. Even though there are dozens of entries for all of them, they will never get put in the game. I think the developers probably put a hard stop at 50,000 ly, so no HIP catalog star can generate further out than that. 0.06 mas of parallax corresponds to 54360 ly.

As a result I am very confident that unless some other special catalog star such as PSR, 2MASS, etc. is found that, HD 158564 is very likely the most distant catalog star reachable, and that there are no HIP stars more distant than that one.

That is what my findings are. Hopefully you guys can use the VizieR tool to find other distant stars. I only looked at 0.07 and 0.08 mas, but you can look at 0.09, 0.1, etc. to see if there are other distant catalog stars that you can go to. Finally, maybe you are wondering, is there anything special about HD 158564, the most distant reachable catalog star? The answer is...not really. It is a large K class giant at 480 solar radii, but there are no other stars or planets. In fact, I didn't even get the first discovery tag on it. That goes to CMDR Capt Multiverse. I suppose this commander didn't upload this to EDSM...if it existed at the time. Regardless, congrats to them.

As always, thank you all for what you do, and happy exploring.

Cmdr OrangeOrange...

That's an excellent piece of work.

It shows that we probably do have the erroneous 1997 catalogue data in our main spreadsheet.
It does appear that the spreadsheet was constructed from catalogue VizierR I/239/hip_main, and Elite took the data from catalogue VizierR I/311/hip2 . There are known problems and warnings about the hip_main catalogue.

I have a download of the complete hip2 catalogue and will replace the data in a copy of the main spreadsheet and see if the distances to all the stars match more closely than they do atm. This will obviously take some time.

Unfortunately we do not have full access to the original spreadsheet to change the catalogue data if and when needed.
But I can create a copy and share that when completed.

I should have known there was something odd about the spreadsheet data because, for example, HIP 845641
has a negative parallax value, which doesn't make sense. This -ve value is identical to the value in the hip_main catalogue entry for that star. The issue of very small parallax values is also interesting, Having parallax values to only 2 decimals does group the furthest stars into discrete bands. I don't think we have noticed that, but I will check for banding in the values we have found. BTW 1 milliarcsecond is equivalent to a hairs width at 1000km.

In the meantime we can carry on visiting the HIP stars, thus checking their exact positions and Sol distances, and looking for Raxxla ! The next merge of the SS with EDSM/Spansh data is due later today, and I will be doing that first.

As promised, the latest merge statistics. There were 81 newly matched stars in the past 7 days and the whole project is now 80.4% complete.

There is only HIP 19855 now preventing 100% completion for slice 25, I'm still undecided what to do with it and also HD 11503 & HD 68256.
Quite a few other slices have only a few issues preventing them from being complete. I will publish a list of those stars and their issues shortly.

Please ignore the negative progress in slice 55, it's a rounding error.

A new spreadsheet .... here.

So, following up on the work done by Cmdr OrangeOrange, I have examined the original HIP catalogues and found that the parallax values in the OP sheet were taken from an old catalogue.

I have now pasted the corrected parallax values into a copy of the original ss, and this has made a huge difference.
This new spreadsheet has finally got all the estimated coordinates from the catalogue data, which, by and large, match the ED coordinates to within a few percentage points.

Because the parallax is still only to 2dp, there is a larger discepancy in the stars furthest away from Sol, but they are still usable numbers.
I have added a couple of new columns :
1) showing the slice numbers where these were used. These only appear beyond about row 90,000
2) An offset value showing by how many LYs the known ED coordinates differ from those calculated from the catalogue data.

Now that we have good estimates of the positions of alll HIP stars I am thinking of using this data to calculate optimum routes to the outstanding HIP stars. Watch this space.

Also interesting is the correlation between very small parallax values and "not found" or unreachable stars. It can be seen that when FD imported the HIP catalogue many stars did not fit into the defined size limits of the galaxy. So it is now not too difficult to predict which stars are either not found or unreachable.

Slice 30 & 31 - To do - just going to check names in these systems:

@Iron Body There were all red-herrings. Systems can be recorded as No trace.

Is there anything else needed or shall I stand down?
