Glorious HIPs - 3306

[Iron Body]

Well that's rather strange, after solving my little self inflicted problem above I have continued with my trip, working my way around the permit locked regions in this area. I took a bit of a risk and jumped my Fleet Carrier 500ly directly through the M41 Sector permit locked region, and then realised I didn't have any fuel left in the tank, well 47 tons to be exact and I wasn't sure if the FC was in an area I could reach, but a bit of roundabout flying got me to it, and this is where the strange bit comes in.

For the last few thousand light years, well more than that, every single star system has been at least discovered, many system mapped and only a very few where some planets were missed altogether but that was just a bonus. Now I am not surprised about that, I am only 2,600ly from Sol and in a very heavily travelled area of the galaxy, these permit locked regions around Barnard's Loop were and probably still are a magnet for explorers. As I said I had 47 tons of fuel in the tank, did a small jump of a couple of under 200ly to bring it a bit close to me, which left 1 ton of fuel, nice, but strangely I jumped the carrier into a completely undiscovered system, no tags on anything, stars, planets, nothing. Also the second last system I passed through was also completely undiscovered, this appears to be a little bubble of undiscovered systems right next to the M41 Sector permit locked regions, so I shall spend a bit more time here checking out the nearby systems to see of there are any more.

The next star on my list is HIP 109034. It is already in EDSM with coordinates -3700, -480 ,-357 and no traffic data.
Having pasted the name into the galmap, it immediately goes to HIP 109034, but at position -14620,-1900,-1520.
This is 11600ly away from my current position, and close to the route I took to HIP 114473.
But something is wrong, EDSM says it's in one position and ED says another.
What is at position -3700, -480 ,-357 ? I move the galmap to that position and what do I find ? - yes HIP 109034 !

So HIP 109034 is in the game twice - this is the first time I've seen a genuine duplicate, usually it's just a matter of upper and lower case confusion.

Also interesting was that after I had bookmarked the near one, the galmap search would only show that one and go to it.
Removing the bookmark the galmap search would only show and go to the far one.

It would be interesting to know what happens if someone visits the faraway copy - what would EDSM do ?
It is too far away for me to visit atm, perhaps someone coming back from the GGG could take a look- it's sort of in that direction.

On scanning a duplicate systems into EDSM there's no guessing, these are my notes on scanning some;

"Here we are at a 2MASS star, and right away I can see another system with the same name less than .3ly away but only 1 system in EDSM, lets see how this goes. As usual the number of bodies in EDSM doesn’t match. Now it says I have scanned 13 of 13 available bodies, so that’s a change! 34 bodies in the nearby system. So now I have scanned 42 of 24 bodies, with the total number of bodies being 43, don’t know what’s happened to the last one, I have definitely scanned all bodies in these 2 systems. That’s the last of these systems on this branch checked, most seem to be the result of multiple bodies with the same name, a couple were just ordinary data errors."

"EDSM indicates 37 bodies, scanned list tells me I have scanned 0 of 18 bodies, there are 25 in the system I just jumped to, so it appears another case of multiple systems with the same name with only 1 being listed in EDSM. Indeed on checking the galmap I see another system with the same name just over 7ly away, so I am off to that! This system has 18 bodies so that must be the source of the message “you have scanned 0 of 18 bodies EDSM” tells me. Of course having scanned that previous system it now tells me I have scanned 25 of 18 bodies, should be interesting to see what happens after scanning this system. Now I have scanned 37 of 18 bodies, the total matches the claimed system total! At this point I am not sure where the number 37 comes from, it’s not a combined total for both systems, no combination of adding or subtracting seem to get me to 37, so I can only assume a 3rd system somewhere with the same name but I am unable to find one using manual searching."

Well that just made it worse, after jumping to and scanning this system a 3rd entry suddenly appeared in EDSM with the same name, also having 2 stars and 1 asteroid belt. So that makes 4 possible systems with the same name! All 3 say I have visited 0 of 15 bodies but list the total number of bodies as 2. I have spotted another system with the same name another 6.9ly away, jumping to that. Same result, there are now 4 systems with that name listed in EDSM, all with the same details. There must be at least 5 systems with this name but I was unable to find any more."

It only gets worse! Try putting the star systems NGC 1817 MMU 71, it will tell you 205.5% of the system has been scanned, it's madness with duplicate systems. Inputting the systems NGC 2168 SB 860 which is my last example, will now show you 4 systems each with 2 stars and an asteroid belt with 13% of the systems scanned, so, anything could happen!

I am guessing thats about the 10 oclock position. I have sorted the remaining stars into clock sectors - 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock etc. There are about 200 stars in each sector

Here are the stars for the 10 o'clock sector, one of the bigger ones. I haven't sorted them into a route of any kind so these positions will be random within that sector.
The second column is the HIP number, the third column the name in ED. Notice that the positions are accurate to 3 or 4 dp.

I am coming back from the edge along the 7 o'clock sector. My first star was HD 236836 which was interesting because it was already discovered in ED by Cmdr Orange! And then the only way I could get EDSM to acknowledge my traffic was to log out and log back in. Even though I had arrived by jumping in with my anaconda, not the FC.

Well that was fun, after reaching my furthest outward point for a little project of my own I headed back to get on with that list and had, well lets call it a miscalculation, with a hot A class star and now I have a malfunctioning FSD. Only fails occasionally, but I am hot footing it to my Fleet Carrier to undertake emergency repairs, only 3.5ky away, but then I will be free to chase stars and illusions again!

Well done ! I am finding my set (sectors 11,12,1) very slow going, though most stars are less than 5 jumps apart. I have been surprised by several stars that are in EDSM, with zero traffic, but have never been visited according to the system map in ED. I'm guessing that these stars were originally trilaterated into EDSM. Although some are reasonably close the the bubble, so it makes me wonder why they were trilaterated at all.

Although there is one that I somehow managed to miss altogether and I am making a trip out to get it, HD 31449, it's in Spansh but not EDSM so I am doing a quick 5kly trip down to clear that last one up, once that's done they are all finished.

Ok, problem with HD 31449, yes it's in Spansh, but there appears no way to get to it, it's in reach of a Fleet Carrier but the carrier navigation refuses to jump to it.

Some of that data seems to be only data you could possibly get by jumping into the system, I can't see solar radius, solar masses, rotational period etc in the galmap, so someone must have been there! Got to think more on this, there must be a nearby star to jump from but I can't see it anywhere.

Ok I waited a while and tried again, this time it's jumping for some reason, so it can be reached, the reason I must have left it last time must have been the same, I followed the Spansh Carrier jump path and the last 3 stars were already visited by my, so last time I was here I got to within 477ly and had to turn back, curious indeed!

It's a strange enough occurrence that I have decided to watch the jump from my carrier bridge in case it's....you know....extra exciting!

Now 10 minutes to jump, I will update......if I survive!

I'll do an update, I'm still not sure I was there, EDSM says I was there, but the star doesn't appear in the EDSM report, I have jumped out and will jump back in to see if I can force an update, but at the moment HD 31449 exists as a system without a star in EDSM, yes I remembered to honk! Bodies...none according to EDSM!

Ok, now it's fixed, for some reason the honk never worked to show the star, I had to fly right up to it, basically fuel scoop range for the scanner to auto-detect because for some reason the manual honk failed me this time!
