That's all for now.

I have looked at a selection of the permit locked entries in Varonica's list and they all follow the same pattern.

1) They are in the main spreadsheet as being "in edsm", which they are. Along with accurate coordinates and commander names.
These entries were created by Jackie Silver presumably by inspection of edsm records before this project was started.
2) Quite old edsm entries 2016 and earlier. The date visited was retrieved from edsm by me last year along with the commander names.
3) Non are on my current list of permit locked systems. This is because we only explored systems without coordinates and these systems have coordinates.

So, how did they get into edsm?

Perhaps they were tri-laterated. But then edsm says they have been visited. I dont know if edsm ever recorded them as visited, even though they had only been trilaterated.
Perhaps the permit locks were only put into place in about early 2017.
Perhaps the permits could be aquired in some way. Has anyone tried neighbouring systems to see if that's possible ?

In any case, I will update the spreadsheet with these systems marked as permit locked "soon".

So, how did they get into edsm?

They are in a permit locked sector, but if I recall it wasn't always locked? Maybe very early in the game it was open, or expanded from a smaller area? I don't know when the decision to permit lock the area was made although they were there when I first started playing, which mean before;

Perhaps the permit locks were only put into place in about early 2017.

I started in 2015 and they were already in game, but maybe not the same size?

Not for mine at least, no permit acquisition opportunities at all in that area, I have been all around in multiple times and visited all the stations in the area. it's a mystery that's for sure. Interestingly I see 3 ships passed through 39 Lambda Orionis since 2015, I think I am going to go with the area was expanded at some stage of the game shortly after I started playing and these systems were visited before. But I do note that the players who visited the system I have checked on EDSM have "distances submitted" numbers, which would be trilateration?

Well that was an interesting one. HIP 16528, when I checked on EDSM before jumping in it said that in fact I was the first person to upload the data to EDSM, but it had no bodies recorded, well I fixed that and couldn't leave it at that so I had to check to see exactly when I first visited the system, I in fact first visited the system on 26/3/2017, certainly before the FSS was out and I just didn't point at the star long enough to record it, oh well!

Another inexplicable system - HIP 101674.
EDSM now says that I am the first to visit the system on EDSM.
The system map itself has no first visited by flags at all. So it appears I am the cmdr to visit.

But my query of EDSM in January 2023 returned cmdr Nobiru as having visited on 2016-06-05.
Which is why all HIP systems were deemed to have been visited !

Yeah there are in fact a few systems in my lot so far that were in EDSM with no previous visitors and I got marked as the first visitor, really strange, I mean even if players changed names in the game it shouldn't affect EDSM right?

Another inexplicable system , HD 200065 aka HIP 103729
Only about 100ly from the last one.
This time there are no first discovered by tags in the game, but EDSM says it was visited in 2017.

It's them buckyball racers, don't honk, don't point at thing, jump in and out as fast as possible. Again before FSS so you had to actually point at the star for a few seconds to tag it, but no name is funny, mind you there was a big rearrangement of data when EDSM moved to the new servers, so maybe some players data was removed as being of no use. Going to test out the SCO now I have finished and then have a look at sector 7.

There's a few left in sector 7 if you like.

I have about 40 left in sectors 10&11, all the far-away ones unfortunately, and will update everything when they are done.

Looked at sector 7, there are some funny ones in there I can tell already, Maia for instance?

Ooh very nice planet in HIP 31307, 9 bio signals, I sampled 7 and got 61m and first footfall, should net me over 300m when I turn it in, all very easy to find as well, even the dreaded Osseus Discus was easy to find, those are the types of planets I like!

Ok, with the update coming Tuesday I decided to put in a bit of extra game time and get sector 7 finished. So that's now done with only a few anomalies, two as mentioned above, Maia, a strange one, can't scan that even if I wanted to it's been visited by so many people anyway don't know why it appeared, and HIP 42091 that's deep in the bubble, and two permit locked systems HD 29450 and HD 31916.
.

HD 204365 is a bit strange. It's the very last star on my sector 10&11 list, so I've been saving it until now.
On EDSM it has zero bodies, and visited for the first time on EDSM by expugnax on Apr 20, 2022 (using my FC)
Which is as expected.

When I target it on galmap, it allows me to view the system map because I've already been there.
I was expecting my cmdr to be "first discovered by", but the system map tells me it's unexplored and it has no "first discovered by" tag.

So it seems to be possible for EDSM to record a first visit, but not the game.
As the system is only accessible by an FC, I expect that is somehow involved but how? Wierd.

Yeah, I am wondering if it is a problem with the auto discovery while sitting in the FC, I have noticed some strange things happen with that. On the odd occasion the system will pop up with fully discovered before I leave my FC due to auto-discovery, but stellar bodies in the system map are still marked as "unexplored" and don't change until I leave the FC and honk as normal, so it may be that auto-discovery treats finding bodies, specially stellar ones, differently than the regular honk from the ship.

I think it depends on the distance the carrier is from the main star, it only auto discovers within a certain distance the same as when you jump in with a ship.

It is then dependent on whether the system has been visited by another and how well they explored the system, if you open up the system map and there are gaps between the planets then it was visited before they could do a full system scan (FSS), only planets and moons that have been previously discovered will be shown as unexplored. If the system has never been visited the only things that will show are those that have been auto discovered.

Its amazing when we get so used to doing things a certain way that at times we forget the basic reasons behind why we do them that way in the first place:)

I am down to the last 35 systems on sector 5.

I have just re-analysed the latest download of "systems without bodies" and found there are now only 75 HIP systems left.
I have looked at all of them on EDSM and they are all either "no traffic" of "zero bodies".
As far as I can tell none are permit locked, but may need a FC to reach.
All of them are ones which were marked as being "in edsm" on the first HIP spreadsheet and so not included in our original quest.

Most are in sectors 5,6,7,8 and not too far from the bubble.
The furthest away are these :
8 , HR 1059 , -2900, -490, -4681
7 , HD 12493 , -4960, 52, -4439
7 , HD 236714 , -5882, -332, -4499
7 , HD 7844 , -7234, -525, -5430
7 , HIP 9962 , -7582, 283, -6806
8 , HD 16310 , -7977, -113, -8488
8 , HD 16653 , -8184, -177, -8884
7 , HD 12509 ,-11687, 809,-10197

Unfortunately, these sectors numbers may be slightly different from previous versions because I couldn't find the original code.

There are still a few systems around sector 5 which should be picked up by K Olley.
I have plotted a route through the rest close to the bubble, avoiding sectors 5 and 7.

My biggest bugbear is HD 204365 in sector 11. I know it has only the main star because I have been there twice.
Once with my main account and again with my alt.
Both times I didn't have EDMC running when I scanned the system ! So I can't now rescan it.
