You can land anything at the engineers bases.
Traders Rest has a gravity of 1.3G (bottom of the three numbers under the height gauge, shown on right during your approach) so I have to be fairly gentle with my Cutter there, but all doable. This is the highest G of the bases I've unlocked. Most of the others are < 0.6G and are no issue.
.
Don't know if its the best method, but I aim for around 30-45 degree glide plane all the way down to landing, gravity dependent.
You drop from space to Orbital flight at around 8MKM above the planet. 75% throttle is good for this.
You drop from Orbital Flight to Cruise at 25Km above the planet. Cruise is a fixed 2,500KM/S.
The last transition from Cruise to final approach is about 25Km from the Target base (Distance, not just height).
If you go too close to the surface in Cruise, you will drop to normal ship speeds (300 in my cutter). Not sure how close, but I'd guess below 5Km. Not really a problem, just may leave you a long flight to the final destination.
The lighter the ship, the easier it is so maybe try it in a Cobra or something before you bring your heavy loader in.
.
Overall, the main thing is make sure you note the gravity. I noticed 3G on a planet far too late and it didn't end well

Only tap down thrusts while you practice landing on any planet above 1.5G and put 4 pips to sys to mitigate heavy landings.
