Without commenting on Google themselves, I'd argue Microsoft's trial was the equivalent of Al Capone getting busted for tax evasion. They'd spent the whole decade squashing competition by fair means or foul, and left to their own devices may well have subverted the web before it was mature enough to fend for itself. In fact I'd go even further - the original outcome of the trial (splitting the company in two) would have been the perfect bit of restructuring to let them avoid the malaise they've suffered since.
