Graphics are getting worse

Not totally without foundation though.. Several games have been "limited" so they won't look better than consoles, just check out the new batman game for one. PC version limited to 30fps like consoles.

Definately, and that's one of the major problems with graphical downgrades.
There is no objective reason why a console game and PC game have to look or perform the same. It's mainly so the console players don't feel like they got the cheap version.

The funny thing is that PC gamers with lowend hardware, accept that it won't look as good as on a highend PC — But console players/developers/publishers can't accept that their hardware is for low-to-mediumend.

Bad console ports are bad not because a PC version is intentionally crippled to make the console version look better, but because these games are initially developed for the console and then are ported to the PC at the last minute with as little effort as possible.

The funny thing is, I don't see console players making those complaints. They only care if a game looks good on their console and on their home TV. Its not an issue for anyone unless some egotistical PC gamer decides to point out how much better the game looks on their machine. In my experience, most console gamers simply don't care and will point how they paid a fraction of the cost of a PC for a perfectly good looking game.

This whole "deh consoles are making my game worse" is some sort of weird persecution complex that some PC gamers have.

The console gamers don't care how good the game looks on your PC.
I don't care how good the game looks on your PC.
I only care how good the game looks on my PC.

I play consoles a lot, I fully accept it.
I accept it and dont mind, I like the ease and no hassle approach console gaming gives a person.
Buy game, insert disk play game.
No worrying about compatibility, no worries wether my hardware is up to the task.
No having to download latest drivers, then roll back to previous drivers due to issues etc.
The only time lately I decided to forgo the console route was for ED.
Not in my opinion a suitable console game, I have an x52 and even using all its 32 buttons I still use half the keyboard.

That's an example of a game that has been ported to PC from a console version.

There are different challenges involved there, where the game has been targeted at the console. The developer has to enhance the fidelity which can interfere with the weighty game logic and introduce new bugs.

ED is a PC game that has been ported to a console. In this instance the developer removes graphical features from the PC version to ensure it runs on the target platform. This is a very common situation. It's a no-brainer.

More valid complaints can arise if the PC version is altered to cater for the consoles, so the interface might get changed or the control system might be compromised. Very difficult to prove though.

In the case of ED, it supports the peripherals of a flight sim and has some of the best VR support available. Arguments that it's a console game don't hold up very well.

I agree with you. It's totally pointless anyone saying "graphics have been downgraded because of consoles".

BUT can we agree that the graphics have been changed (unintentionally or otherwise), and whilst we don't know the reasons for that, they are now noticeably worse that before?

I love how consoles always get the blame. You do realise that the consoles are more powerful than a lot of PCs right?

Perhaps the reason for the dumbing down is that Frontier realise not everyone has a high spec PC and therefore by optimising the graphics they can increase their market audience.

does anyone got a old GraphicsConfiguration.xml file saved? could be interesting to do a comparison, and perhaps its possible to re-enable options in it if anything has been lowered.

Here's one from February this year.

No idea how to read it, but help yourself.

Yeah, sure...scale down the lower or medium graphic settings, but don't scale down the high or ultra settings.

I think it's more likely that alterations are occurring due to general optimisation. We know work has been going on to reduce stuttering with mixed success. The new shader optimisation that we see during initialization for example. There has certainly been some improvements in some areas and they may have a knock on effect elsewhere.

I agree, its a much better response to focus on what has changed rather than speculate on whether its deliberate due to knee jerk reactions to the console version.

the only thing I have noticed with the graphics is that sometimes when I boot up I looks a tiny bit jagged on some of the textures on the edges of certain things....if I alt and tab out,and go back in its fine lol.....

the only way the pc version and the console versions look the same is if FD dumb down our graphics to suit the consoles..

remember there gpu is the equivelant of a hd7790.....it wont upgrade!...until the new console generation hits.

lets hope pc version stays as the ultimate dream version....and FD don't restrict more stuff like planet landings and all that good stuff...just because the consoles may not handle it well.

I really hope that when all of this xbox release nonsense is done, and the console kiddies are sold on the idea that they have the same “hi-res” graphics as the PC version, then FD will do the honourable thing and scale my graphics back up again please.

When I forked out £1500 for a new PC, I didn’t expect to have Elite’s graphics deliberately and regularly by Frontier.

Am I wrong ?

You are not wrong at all...

I agree with this.
Although as I've already said, as someone who has upgraded their graphics card recently, I'm seeing more good than bad and I'm far from using a high end set-up. I appreciate that players running PCs with bleeding edge graphics cards, may be noticing things more.

Its not just graphic cards that make the difference to graphics mate - CPU speed, BUS Speed, RAM amount, RAM speed, and to a lesser extent the HDD access times....all have an impact upon your machine's ability to render 3D graphics quickly and in high definition. Having a new graphic card doesn't necessarily qualify as a "high end set up" if your CPU, Mobo, RAM and HDD are all three years old.

An xbox one, at £300 is seriously low spec in hardware terms, but it has an unchanging hardware architecture which means that its easier to develop for, and its geared to work at the very best that its hardware will allow. But its hardware ain't impressive at all in and of itself.

Yup, I get this as well.
Definitely a problem FD need to fix. Not a sign that the graphics are being "down-graded."

I've no idea as to the reasons behind the changes, but I agree that the graphics are not as good as they were when Braben marketed the game as 4k ready.
