Great Raxxla Potato Hunt - Help us scan every system within 200 ly of Sol

Just visited Theta Capricorni and I found something odd. The system map is larger than usual. As if one planet is missing.

----------------

It's probably caused by the co-orbital line between A1 and A2, it bunches up the planets like here, you can see the spacing differnce between AB1, AB2 and AB5 vs AB3 and AB4:

The Great Raxxla Potato Hunt has been operating for over a year!

The project has had contributions from 119 unique CMDRs. We've found about thirty-five crashed ships, mapped hundreds of moons, and noted hundreds of megaships over the past year.

There are some new videos to help CMDRs who want to participate.
  • A Search Demo video, showing how to claim and report a grid.
  • A Findables video, which overviews what we consider "interesting."
  • An alternative method for Signal Counting by CMDR Slegnor.
There is a 3D Visualization of our search progress on this site.

We've scanned 1794 / 5,123 grid sections (+21), which is 35.02% of our search grid (searched once).
We have confirmed 71 of those sections (searched twice).

That includes 25,240 / 67,941 systems (+302), which is 37.15% of systems.*

Notes
  • 25 Moons
  • 10 Megaships
  • CMDR Slegnor found a Crashed Ship on Jataya A 1.

Fun facts:
  • At the current rate (About 20.2 grids/week), we'll reach the halfway point in 37 weeks (Early October 2021), and scan all systems in 164 weeks (Mid-March 2024).
  • If we returned to the pace near the beginning of the potato hunt (About 59.8 grids/week), we'll reach the halfway point in 13 weeks (Mid-April 2021), and scan all systems in 56 weeks (Mid-February 2022).
Folks should definitely join in! I had never actually encountered crashed ships or megaships before joining this project. I'm sure there's other things I'll find

Well it was mostly one player who contributed to that massive amount of grids scanned in the beginning. 747 out of 1909 (~39%) reports so far have been submitted by that guy, but he burned out and only does a few grids per week now.
If you know some people that are just half as active as he was that would be fantastic :)

After the bubble is scanned, have you considered doing something similar for the Col 70 sector and guardian space? And again, i will be joining you in the future. My life is in a state of flux at the moment with classes.

I haven't thought about something like that, but it might be interesting. Picking a few 50-ly search areas would be a reasonable scope.

Mostly, I hope the techniques we've developed get applied in similar searches by others:
  • We have a decent way of bookmarking systems that aren't known to EDSM.
  • Our search procedure is doing a good job of finding things that it's supposed to find.
  • The spreadsheet, its scripts, and the community engagement on Discord seem to be a workable model for organizing and coordinating.
I'd like to think that our methods will survive the survey to be used elsewhere.

Personally, I've spent over a year doing pretty much only this survey. My guess would be most of this year will be spent finishing it (unless we get even more folks to help each week). I have a circumnavigation planned that I've been itching to go on. So once we're done, I will probably take a long break from things like this to get back out into the black.

If you picked up a free account, i'd recommend making a pvp only account and getting a little murder on. I've done this, and i have no regrets at all.
