First of all, I would like to thank all of you friendly Cmdr's for taking part in this silly project of mine. So far, 104 people have posted their figures (or part of their figures).

100 is, I believe, a good starting number to try and establish some form of trend in player's habits.
In the meantime, you can keep on posting your numbers on the original thread : Grind-O-meter
I will keep updating the database.

Once again Cmdrs, thank you!

Now the formalities are out of the way, let me explain how this is going to work:

3 posts will follow this introduction,

- 1st, some basic numbers.
- 2nd, the actual Grind-O-meter concept and everybody's score.
- 3rd, the meat and potatoes - the actual results and analysis.

The first two post should come fairly soon (today, most likely) and I hope to conclude my analysis by this Sunday or the next (if I'm not finished by Sunday, I'm afraid you'll have to wait another week since like many of us, I do have a day-job too :D)

I will bump this thread every update (3 times in total)

1st - Some Numbers

1st, some numbers :

If there is one thing that I beleive is actually relevant, it’s the opinion players have about the game… so here comes the
Satisfaction Survey :

57.7% of the panel do like the game in its current state.
26.9% of the panel do like the game but deemed necessary to mention some of the qualms they had (whether being bugs, broken mechanics or else)
7.7% of the panel do not like the game very much but they do recognized its potential or technical achievment.
5.8% of the panel do not like the game, period.
1.9% of the panel did not answer.

Seniority :

38% of the panel joined the game in beta or earlier.
20% around release.
19% in the first part of 2015.
23% in the summer 2015 or later.

Time played (according to the in-game stats from the right panel) :

Players from the panel have cumulated 95,728 hours online.
For an average of 987 hours per player.

Credits racked up (or an introduction to the Grind-O-meter) :

Player’s average credits made per hour – 1,088,953 Cr.
Player’s average credits made per day (having owned the game) – 3,156,539 Cr.
Which scores a 5.3 on the GoM (more on the GoM to follow)

Ships :

21 ships have been mentioned by the players so far (most flown and liked)

1st – the Asp was mentioned 31 times
2nd – the Python was mentioned 24 times
3rd – the Anaconda was mentioned 21 times
4th – the Cobra Mk3 and the Vulture were mentioned 15 times
5th – the Federal Assault Ship was mentioned 13 times
6th – the Fer de Lance was mentioned 9 times
7th – the Clipper was mentioned 6 times
8th – both the cutter and the corvette, along with the Type9 were mentioned 4 times
9th – the Cobra Mk4, the Eagle, the Viper and the courier were mentioned 3 times
10th – both Diamondbacks, the Orca and the Dropship were mentioned twice
11th – the Sidewinder and the Type7 were mentioned only once

Forum posts (Excluding moderators) :

The panel posted 74,967 times on the forum
For an average of 757 posts per player
Which is 1.99 post per day on average

2nd - Grind-O-meter concept and everybody's score

First of all, this is not a blaming game so I would like to settle things down about the term "Grind"
And to do so, I will quote the ambassador:

One commanders grind is another commanders test of endurance.
If you aren't enjoying what you are doing, you are doing it wrong ;) :p

Now to the point…

GOM copy.jpg

As you can see, the Grind-O-meter scales from 0 to 20.
Like I already mentioned in a previous post, the average player scores a 5.3 on the GoM. Represented above by the green area of the gauge.
The area below and in black , ranging from 0 to 4, would be where the casual player or in a starter ship should normally be (or someone who doesn't play the game much either).
The area above and in yellow, ranging from 6 to 10, is where the "Grind" begins or rather, where the money makers are (once again, not right or wrong here, just how it is for the purpose of this survey).
And finally, the last upper area (and the major one) in red and ranging from 10 to 20, the "danger zone". This is where we could argue to find either the most dedicated players or those who are dangerously reaching the burning out point….
To be discussed.

The Grind-O-meter value takes into consideration, the credits earned by a player, his in-game play-time and the time having owned the game (for kick starters and alpha or beta players, at the beginning of gamma, at the last wipe)

I normally consider seniority to be related to gained knowledge over time. IMO, someone who started at launch, but played 100 hrs, knows a lot less about the game than someone who started later, but has 1500 hrs. Maybe re-name that category, or add a new one that accounts for hrs played?

Also, you may add more, but your current 'grind o meter' should be called 'credit grind o meter'. Lots of other things to 'grind' in the game, like military rank, minor faction, combat rank, explorer rank, etc. Although not all of these are easily quantified with numbers. Just a suggestion.

Not being a english native speaker, I was actually wondering what term would best describe what I decided to call "seniority".
I'm open to suggestions but what I mean is, people who got involved in ED longer than others.

I understand where you are coming from but ranks and such weren't part of the questions asked, I did my best to keep it simple in order to invite as many people as possible to post their details.

or add a new one that accounts for hrs played?

That is the concept of Grind-O-meter which I'm getting at in the post above ;)

3rd - Meat & Potatoes (analysis & conclusions) - Part 1

The Dislikes :

The few who declared to not like the game whatsoever (5.8% of the panel) scored an average of 2.5 on the GoM, well below the average. So to say that people dislike the game because they grind it to death doesn't seem appropriate.
On a second note, the same crowd posted an average of 388 posts (0.72 posts per day). So once again, given the panel’s average of 757 posts (1.99 per day), to say that the people disliking the game are a "vocal minority" isn’t true either.

Now the few more (7.7%) who declared to not like the game so much while still acknowledging that ED had potential, or a good flight model, or was technically impressive, scored an average of 6.7 on the GoM, flirting with the yellow grinding zone, yet nowhere near the danger zone (red).
It is worthwhile to note that only one of those Cmdrs scored an impressive 18.1 GoM and that without him, the "not so happy lot" would have scored an average of 5 GoM (bang on the green zone)
This is just to show the limits of a reduced panel. I’m personally curious as to what those results would be on a panel of say 1000 persons.
Now about the forum posts, the "not so happy crowd" posted an average of 1392 posts (2.42 per day) – (our 18.1 GoM fella actually posted a lot less and is on par with the average of the entire panel with 757 posts and 1.7 posts per day.
The fact that people generally displeased with the game, yet having mentioned positive things about it, are posting more than the average would suggest that they’re hoping for something better from Frontier and trying to get their voice heard.
Here are some example of their statements:
- Great potential, fun flight model. Horrible design decisions everywhere.
- Awesome and yet boring at the same time. I don't know why I play it and probably need a psychiatrist.
- Tedious and repetitive, could be great

… and the Likes:

The 57.7%, fully happy with the game in its current state and shape scored an average of 6.7 GoM (including 3 players scoring such high scores, they broke the Grind-O-meter! – i.e. well beyond 20 GoM)
Although flirting with the yellow zone too, they’re clearly not in the danger zone either (as a group), so saying that those who like the game the most are those who grind the most simply isn’t true.
That said, it is true to say that those who grind the most are part of those who like ED the most.
Once again, I will have to quote the ambassador:
One commanders grind is another commanders test of endurance.
If you aren't enjoying what you are doing, you are doing it wrong ;) :p
Now to the vocal minority argument, or in this case, a potential vocal majority:
Those happy 57.7% posted on average 960 posts with 2.65 daily posts. This is considerably higher than the 757 average posts from the panel, one might say.
But if we were to exclude the happy moderators, those 960 average posts would fall to 702, although still with a 2.41 average post per day.
So although the happy people do not post more than any other user, they are still fairly active on a daily basis (exploration and screenshot thread, anyone?)

As for the 26.9% of somewhat happy but…
They scored an average of 5 GoM, which could not be more average :D
And despite the 1.38 daily posts, they cumulate an average of 790 posts. One could say, exactly like the folks not completely unhappy with the game, that these are posting more than others in order to get their voice heard and see progression in the game.

In fact, those who hate or love the game posted an average of 545 posts
And those who expressed mixed feelings posted an average of 1091 posts
I would be fair to say that those who love the game are happy to stay happy and that those who hate it aren’t trying to take anybody down with them.
Instead, the vocal part seem to be arguing about how to improve things, whether they are individually rather pleased or displeased with the current state of affairs.
But the money grinding factor clearly seems to be a non issue.

Fun fact:
If those who love the game and those who like it despite certain flaws have clocked in an average of 417 hours of game time,
Those who either hate it or dislike it despite the positive things they could mention about ED have clocked in comparison an average of 905 hours of game time.

More to follow…

I'm not sure, what, if anything, 'when I bought the game' tells you. To me, it really is meaningless. I suppose when they bought the game compared to hours played might be informative. e.g. I bought the game 12 months ago and played 10 hrs (the game stunk) or I bought the game last month and played 350 hrs (The game awesome and it is my life). As for what to call what you are displaying 'when I bought the game' category, I don't think there is one word that correctly describes that. IMO, seniority certainly is not it. :)

I'm just saying you should call it 'credit grind o meter'. I guess I should wait to see what you finally put up, but right now, it just looks like it will indicate how many credits, or credits/hr someone has. A true generic 'grind o meter' would take other 'grind' activities into account.

What was the GoM formula? Did i fall off the list some how?

No, you didn't fall off the list… quite the opposite!
The post is updated now (with the missing ones and the reason why)

As for the formula, I'd rather save it for after I get to post the analysis, otherwise I'll be spending my time arguing whether or not it's a valid one instead of actually writing my conclusions.
Some folks already seem to have missed the comedy element behind it.

Nice job pippo (but you missed yourself off the GoM score :D ).

:p

1.6 GoM
I didn't think it was relevant :)

And remember MOST people who come here are the completely devoted people who took the time to sign up and participate over a long period of time thus are passionate about the game. It isn't a true indication of anything.

I couldn't agree more, but hey ho

Thanks for the latest "Meat & stuff" bit pippo. - Very interesting.

Can't give more rep but have some virtual bacon :D.

Interesting and informative posts OP. Thanks a bunch for gathering and assembling the data

Apparently its 'entertaining'. What I find highly entertaining is that there appears to be no actual stats test, just a bunch of random percentages that you could apply pretty much any hypothesis to, to make whatever claims you like.

ps pippo you're still my valentine
