Grind requirements are insane

I played lineage 2 around 15 years ago and i can tell you that the grind in elite is rookie level compared to what was in L2, but it was a time when i did not have a wife and Kids. So dont lecture me about getting free stuff, because now i grind money to pay for the house loan.

I know the grind in elite will not go away, but that does not mean, it cant be done in a more sensible way that actually endorses the activity you prefer doing. Thats all i want. I never got anything for free in my life, and although its just game, a sense of reasonble accomplishment is also important.
I played lineage 2 as well and it can't be compared with elite. In LA2 there is always a race. A race to be first in some activitty, to be stronger than someone, to become a hero. Elite is about casual gameplay with no hurry. Npc won't harass you if you don't have full G5 equip you know.
endorses the activity you prefer doing
There are bunch of missions and all of them somehow rewards you with mats (and as a bonus - loot). If you don't want play "foot" missions so much - then you don't need G5. With G3 (even g1 btw) you can easily destroy everything on HAZCZ and get your elite rank.

I mean, I'm elite level, I have money en masse, why should I do grunt work :D

I am one of those strange persons, that actually enjoys grunt work. Especially on foot combat, where the ship is more of a a supplement. That is why i returned to Elite not so long ago.

But like I said, we all have our favourite activities. Some people prefer to by business tycoons and that is absolutely fine. Its the path and the fun that one chooses to pursue that matters :)

I have FPS issues in Combat so I've been taking Threat 3 reactivation missions, mostly no NPC's and insane levels of material and loot. Missions average 90K Cr but I make between 1 - 2 million Cr on Data and loot while gathering large amounts of Mats

Hope you're selling selectively :D Quite a bit of it is needed at some point (not all though; most goods can be sold).

The problem isn't that you need to find "stuff" to upgrade, it's not even the amount of "stuff" that's the problem.

The problem is that it doesn't really happen "naturally" enough, add to that, some of the "stuff" is just .. such common things, like wiring or a random computer. This makes it feel weird because this junk must just be in hundreds of shops, and why is it so useful anyway?

The data can sort of get away with it, data could be unique etc.

Copper wiring.... Should not be a material for upgrades, unless you can just buy it. It's very silly.

But the main thing is lack of natural feeling progression, as someone said earlier in the thread

From what I can tell, it's basically unnecessary to have more than G3 level stuff, which you can just buy in a shop. The combat difficulty doesn't seem to justify getting any higher than that.

Then G3 should be the top grade because, you know, this is a multiplayer game and it's not exactly good to PvP using inferior gear...

Haha, I don't care about other player's gear... Try to find me out there with a G5 and maxed weapons, good luck :)

That was always one if the beautiful things in ED.

Elite is about casual gameplay with no hurry

Yes, and this is how i play. I do not sweat it, i just try to underline the importance of mechanics that make sense, and promote the the activity you like to focus on. Thats all.

I am in no hurry to get my elite rank. I prefer on foot missions. And again, no need for hurry to get G5 equipment. Its not about getting the best things the fastes way, at least for me. No. Its about being rewarded with materials that will allow you to upgrade stuff, for the particular activity you are involved in and enjoying the time you are doing this.
Yes, there are missions that that reward you with the necessary stuff and truth is I pick missions for the mats i know are necessary for me. Case is that the missions can be random.
For example I need to do courier work, or crash site scavenging stuff in order to get 5 Manufacturing Instructions. But my preference is on foot combat/bounty hunting work and I would like to have the option to more often be able to receive materials that are important to me, and not depending on RNG what might pop up in a mission that I do not prefer doing.
I simply would wish for a more structured and foreseeable approach. I hope I explained what I meant.
Similar thing applies to Settlment missions. If you want to gather extra loot, you need to change clothes to a maverick suit, after you cleared the scavengers. Would it not be nice to get loot from defeated enemies, instead running to the ship to get the arc cutter, and basically do the thing you have been sent to prevent from happening in the first place?

You simply step into the shoes of the scavengers that you just killed.

Edit: So in general, to sum up. Its not about easy mode, its about having fun and being rewarded in a way that makes sense.

I certainly can't, first and foremost because I don't even have the dlc. :)
(Maybe I'll buy it later, once the issues have been fixed, but certainly not in its current state.)
Upgrading to "beat the Joneses" isn't a thing in Odyssey. And it's nothing like (I mean it, NOTHING LIKE) ship engineering. I'm at G5 with one weapon already. And almost with a suit. It was efforless compared to getting a PVP-ready ship. And likely a billion times more balanced too.

Maybe you meant what I wrote. But I agree. I do not have anything against material gathering, it is simply the feeling that at its current state, it is done in some unnatural way. Common parts like the wiring you mention, although logic thinking tells you that are all over the place, they suddenly become special because they can only by found in settlment closets or as mission rewards.

Its simply silly when you take a mission. Hey, go kill 12 scavengers and as a reward i will give you 12 copper wires + 100k cash. Sounds good? Great, now go kill stuff.
It just feels weird.

I don't understand why you need to craft upgrades at all. I don't need to hand craft a red dot for my AR-15 in real life, nor do I have to have my barrel custom made or anything else. You'd think that in 1000+ years, a lot of these things would be made with attachments in mind and there would be already established companies producing attachments for these things.

It's very gamey and extremely immersion breaking.

A mass produced combat rifle that's standard issue across entire militaries, but I need to go and collect 23 rubber bands and a bunch of cat memes for one of the 9 people in the galaxy that know how to make a scope that fits on to this gun.

It's bizarre.

There should be a bunch of low tier mods that are mass produced/standard issue that you can purchase with credits.

Then have the more advanced, "after market" stuff require the engineers.
