Grind requirements are insane

If gaining the items/matts where more challenging rather than rng of hitting 400+ irregular markers (example ofcourse) to only find one push while someone else can find 5 on their first go...id agree, however since this insane rng exists without actually fun core gameplay (Missions are horrendous atm and somewhat worse than the poi grind and combat zones should be made give you rewards per rank or something)
Well..... I can't say, so I guess I won't.

Why does everyone think they should be able to go from start to finish in an hour? Elite is not that kind of game.

Now unlocking Engineers, that can be a grind, since in some cases it just doesn't happen organically as part of playing the game.
Engineers are kinda anti-sandbox in nature. They add "Item Levels" style "MMO gear" to space game and breaks balance. And player forced to do pants-on-the-head activities...for upgrading his ship?

Now that I have several hours gameplay in EDO I was curious how much more grind is required to get suit and weapon upgrades. It shocked me. So far, I was only able to collect a small percentage of the stuff required. I'm not good at FPS, so I don't go into settlement missions.
So, how shall a non-FPS player get enough mats for at least 2 suits (Artemis, Maverick) in a reasonable time?

FDev disabled all relogging "exploits" I'm aware of, which makes the situation worse. And I'm not saying that logoffski gameplay is fun.

To just upgrade all 3 suits (Artemis, Maverick, Dominator) from grade 1 to grade 5 you need the following materials. Be aware: This is just upgrading, engineering is on top of that. Data collected from crafting lists in INARA.
  • 93 Suit Schematic
  • 87 Health Monitor
  • 90 Power Regulator
  • 63 Manufacturing Instructions
  • 80 Aerogel
  • 80 Titanium Plating
  • 80 Carbon Fibre Plating
  • 240 Graphene
To upgrade 2 guns (randomly selected: Manticore Oppressor, Karma P-15) from 1 to 5 you need this:
  • 10 Weapon Schematic
  • 42 Manufacturing Instructions
  • 31 Compression-Liquefied Gas
  • 31 Ionised Gas
  • 80 Tungsten Carbide
  • 80 Weapon Component
  • 80 Chemical Superbase
  • 64 Microelectrode
For reference, how long do you think it should take to upgrade? For me, I’d say 8-10 hours per level of just playing and picking things up along the way sounds good. This is highly varied from person to person.

My approach from Odessy launch was to first look at the engineers...and start working on missions to unlock them. Those 10 restore and repair settlements seems easy enough. And for good measure I’ll take shuttles everywhere to unlock that engineer who wants the 100 LY in a shuttle.

I’ve been sticking to only planet side concourses and I’ve found a G3 Artemis, a G3 laser rifle (forgot name), a G3 rocket launcher, and a G2 maverick and some other G2 weapons.

When doing the repair settlement missions, I’m finding a lot of mats in these places. Then I’ve been trading with bartenders. I’ve upgraded the repeating laser carbine to level 3 from 1. It’s slow going, but I’m just playing the game casually and picking stuff up along the way.

I’d like to see weapons and things salvageable from enemies bodies. Seems like the only cool loot moments are when you run to Pioneer and see what they have. It’s a little dull. I want to see some stuff in wrecks and assassination targets.

FDev have kind of been dipping their toes into the concept of engineer skipping, what with pre-engineered modules, and even odyssey allowing for getting partially-engineered things for credits. I wish they'd just fully go in that direction.

Possibly but engineering ships to get the best jump range (I mean record breaking distances) or the fastest racer (i've got a viper that cruises at 707 m/s and boosts to over 900) is a bit of a mini game in itself? It often gets argued that engineering forces an arms race, especially in PvP but really I think that's true in any case. If someone turns up in an Anaconda, regardless of any engineering, you'll always struggle in a Sidewinder so pressure is to buy an Anaconda too. Asymmetry in combat is just a fact of life.

I quite enjoy tinkering with ships like that, calling it actual gameplay, but as someone else sad, the last thing you want to do is go grinding for materials imo. Best bet is to do other things - bounty hunt, pirate, CZ or scavenge surfaces for caches, and pick up materials on the way like a good habit, not paying much attention to it. Then, when you feel like setting up a new ship, what materials have I got? You've got what accrued .. and a materials trader sorts out the rest.

Fair question. About that timeframe should be ok. But people are different and I'm rather slow at this. I just tried my first restore mission and it took me 2,5 hours to loot the place and to complete the mission. I looted before I activated the place and got lost. Expecting that I would get better over time in 8-10 hours I may do 6-8 missions. I'm not sure if that would be sufficient to get a suit upgrade.

BTW, almost lost my ship when the turrets came active and I was still extinguishing the fires.

Lol, I try to take missions that are on the same planet and then hop around on it. I found going back to a small ship is much more enjoyable for planetside work. I’m back in my trusty Cobra, but Asp Scout or Diamondback would be great also. I did about 4 salvage missions, then had to get some papers from a mining settlements. I hadn’t seen one of those and there were these big energy drills everywhere. I went and took a look at the hole, instant death...dumb move on my part. That adds a couple hours to the next upgrade for sure. Now some people would flip out at loosing the other missions, I still had a good time for a couple hours before work.

A mass produced combat rifle that's standard issue across entire militaries, but I need to go and collect 23 rubber bands and a bunch of cat memes for one of the 9 people in the galaxy that know how to make a scope that fits on to this gun.

It's bizarre.

There should be a bunch of low tier mods that are mass produced/standard issue that you can purchase with credits.

Then have the more advanced, "after market" stuff require the engineers.

I thought you were joking about the cat memes, but:

Don't agree that HGEs = 28 settlement types but each to their own
You're confusing things. Those 28 settlements don't really change the fact that in the end you're just opening containers and waiting for bars to fill up. While it's nice to have variety, even 150 settlements wouldn't add depth to the gameplay.

Reminds me of the discussion back in the day: "Why do all star ports look the same"

Hey, go kill 12 scavengers and as a reward i will give you 12 copper wires + 100k cash. Sounds good? Great, now go kill stuff.
It just feels weird.
This could easily be fixed by changing the copper wires to polonium-enriched iridium super wires, and adding a little blurb stating they can only be manufactured in advanced Federation facilities in low orbit around class 4 gas giants... but I guess that's too far out for some people.

I think they disabled the relogging thing with the last patch...

But as a explorer myself, I would rather pay a horrendous sum ingame for a fully updated suite than doing pew pew, it just does not interest me that much.
Sorry for self quoting, but that would be an idea for some more emergent gameplay..

Let me post some missions for the mats on my / any FC for instance :)
