Evening CMDRs,
I was going to post this in the VRMark thread but think it might be better in a new one.
I've got an I5 4670k and an EVGA GTX 1080 ftw and I'm pretty convinced that ASW is often kicking in because my system goes CPU bound. When I first got the 1080 I noticed that with the VR ultra preset my CPU would often hit 100% in stations but the GPU would be around 60%. I eventually concluded, after turning ASW off and ramping up SS etc, that I was CPU bound so asked a mate wth an I7 4790k and a rift to see if if ASW kept kicking in for him before I blew even more money on my PC and he was having the exact same thing experience. I decided not to bother upgrading and stopped thinking about it.
For some reason the other day I decided to change my custom settings to VRhigh and I was getting 90fps everywhere until I decided to do the CG. Even in the hanger ASW kicks in. So I tried switching to solo. No ASW kick in.
What I think is happening is that up to a certain level of graphic detail 90fps is no problem but beyond that the CPU struggles to tell the GPU what to do fast enough, it bottlenecks occasionally so ASW kicks in. If you think you have found a good balance for your GPU but then your CPU gets a bit busy then suddenly ASW kicks in (or you drop below 90 fps if ASW is turned off). The thing is you can really start upping the graphic details around this point and nothing really happens to you FPS because you GPU is doing the heavy lifting. The worrying thing here is that and i5 and i7 aren't different enough that ASW doesn't kick in and when ASW does kick in that nice expensive 1080 is only running at around 60% load.
My system only has 8GB of ram so perhaps that is a factor for me but the CPU load vs GPU load vs FPS seems to suggest some weird outcomes that maby other mights find as well if you experiment.
