Guardian technology

I was planning on unlocking all of the guardian tech and I was wondering is it effective or useful for standard play or only for thargoid encounters?.. I don't want to kit a ship out in guardian tech and then get blown out of space by the first pirate I encounter. Plenty of guides telling me where to get it and what it does but I just wanted some clarity on it. Can I use it for standard pve content? or should I focus guardian tech for thargoid hunting?

Havent done it myself although the boosters seem to be a popular choice , the FSD booster , shield and hull i think are the goto's so far but someone with more experience in guardian tech maybe able to help more.

The FSD booster is an excellent mod for any ship if you have a spare slot. It’s especially useful for exploration.

The shield booster can be useful but only on very specific builds. I suggest tinkering with Coriolis before you go that route.

The module reinforcement is a total waste of time for a PVE ship. In PVP it can provide a little extra protection, but barely.

The power plant and power distributor are actually worse than engineering a normal human module. But if you’re not interested in engineering, or don’t care about min-maxing, (or want to be a space hipster) they can be an OK alternative.

The weapons, hull reinforcement, and SLF are only useful against Thargoids... full stop.

The grind is pretty bad so you might want to think about setting priorities. Otherwise you’ll probably burn out.

Good luck!

The Guardian frame shift drive booster can add up to 10 LY jump range. A module reinforcement package cannot be engineered, so a Guardian MRP is better than the equivalent class. The Guardian weapons are for Thargoids and weak on regular NPCs. Standard engineered modules will outperform the Guardian versions.

The fsd booster is great as mentioned before although on the smaller ships they consume quite some power so a little engineering on your power plant is recommended in that case imho.
As for the SLF, I have all three unlocked but only use the trident with it's fixed plasma autocannon, it's armor is paperthin though.
I just love the look of it, especially with green lasers, the lightshow is quite spectacular :)

I couldn't be bothered by the rest of the guardian stuff, vs humans it hardly makes a difference and the grind is real.

thanks, so basically what I'm taking from this is that aside from the fsd booster everything else is either outperformed by its standard counterpart or only useful for thargoids.

I concur with the above :) I have Guardian FSD (always worth the extra 9 or 10 ly increase), Guardian Shield Booster (actually works and is handy but consumes power), Gauss Canon which I have never used (they say it works well against Thargoids .... I kept my AX multi-cannons on turrets for that job).

With the exception of the MRPs in a few edge cases, yes. There is no real equivalent to the shield boosters, and they are fairly useful for making shield tanks with some smaller ships:

I'd add to that, Guardian Shard Cannons are actually decent PvE weapons. Their shield damage is fairly comparable to the common G5 Double-shot Screening-Shell Frags... for a stock weapon, provided you're relying on other systems for Armour damage, that's pretty decent[1].

Just to reiterate, not saying it's "better" than the modded frag cannon by any means... just that if engineering isn't your bag, it's actually a decent weapon system. Apples to apples, the Shard Cannon is vastly superior to a vanilla frag cannon[1]

[1] vs a stock fit.

At least for this point, the grind can be made easier by the fact that you can log out and back in to guardian sites in order to gather mats.
A Guadian version of Dav's. At least it was when I did it way back

I'm a fan of small plasma chargers for pve. Decent ammo pool, absolute damage, good for training fixed, punches above usual small weapon damage. Fun on small ships.

But in order
FSD Booster
Guardian Rail for Goids
Guardian Shield Booster

Pretty much. The Shield boosters are decent IMHO.
All the Guardian modules like the PP are about the equivalent of a G4 mod.
So if you don't have the engineers unlocked or are lacking mats, then a Guardian module will do a fine job. Else go get that ship pimped by the engineers.

The answer is - yes.

The Plasma Charger is a great small weapon.
Shard Cannons are rather effective.
The Power Plant & Distributor synergy combo can be quite effective for some builds.
The FSD Booster is pretty much a must-have if long-jumping is your thing.
Shield and Hull reinforcements can be a nice addition to many builds.

The ultimate deciding factor though is what best suits your play style.

The Guardian grind was one of the more enjoyable ones for me.
I have almost every module except the turreted weapons. I also
unlocked the Trident SLF.

You really want to get the FSD booster whatever your progress is in game.
If you are new to engineering, the Power Plant and Distributor could bridge
some gaps a bit. I have Shield reinforcement packs on all of my ships because
I dislike SCB's. The rest is optional.

If you will be hunting bugs, the Guass cannons are pretty much meta. Get all 3
sizes so you have some ship choice flexibility. Regardless of what anyone says,
the Shard Cannons turn human ships into small metal filings in a surprisingly
short period of time, and are very fun to use. Definitely try them out on a Vulture.

For the trip I recommend a big jump Dolphin with four SRV's. My first attempts
used up all four. Put two Point Defense on the TOP and land close to the site.

You can find all you need in this walk-through:

Here is the build I used:

Have fun..

Generally speaking you will need different outfitting for fighting human NPCs and Thargoid Interceptors.

Drop the "unlocking all", that's daft. Go after the stuff you think you want, FSD booster is funky for all ships and makes unlocking the others easier (just like standard FSD engineering). Shield boosters are great for combat ships. Power plant and distro not really up there with the engineered ones.

The weapons are good fun, very effective against Thargoids. As for NPC's up to about deadly they are great after that they become noticeably less use. Plasma chargers are one of my favourite weapons overall just for the look and shield stripping ability, gauss cannons are deadly on NPCs until you hit the high rank ones.

Not exactly suited to min-maxed builds but good for a laugh.

My top 5 bits of Guardian kit:-

1) FSD Booster.
2) Shield Booster.
3/4) PP and PDist.
5) Erm....

The FSD booster is a no-brainer.
It allows your ships to jump further. What's not to like?

The usefulness of the Shield Boosters really depends on your style of play.
If you're happy with using SCBs then they might not appeal.
I found there's a lot of potential for improving combat ships with the Guardian SBs.
For example, a small/medium ship fitted with a D-rated shield and a GSB can have a better shield and be lighter than the same ship fitted with an A-rated shield.
Alternatively, you can use a Bi-Weave and a GSB to get a fast-recharging shield with the same protection as an A-rated shield.

The PPs and PDists aren't better than regular items that have been engineered but they're a useful stopgap.
If you're in the middle of engineering a ship, for example, you can bung in a Guardian PP/Pdist and test out other aspects of the build, such as weapons and shield, without having to engineer the PP and PDist as well.
Once you're happy with everything else, fit a regular PP and PDist and engineer them.

+EDIT+

Oh, wait....

5) SLFs.

Cool toys and they do a lot of damage in the hands of an experienced SLF jockey.
Really fragile so not as useful for a rental SLF pilot or a low-ranked SLF pilot but if you've got an Elite SLF pilot they can do wonderful things with an XG-8.
Also, worth unlocking just to go and see the Guardian Beacons... which are freaking AWESOME!

Guardian Weapons really depend - are you happy with fixed weps? If you are then they're worth unlocking to see how they work. If not then don't bother unless you're off Thargoid hunting.

I've found the distributor to be handy specifically for particular minmaxing builds of an "is this possible?" nature, but they're the sort where you'll only know you're interested in it if you specifically know that's what you're trying to put together.

Otherwise, the FSD booster is the only thing everyone has a reason to unlock. Most other things are on a case-by-case basis or are only useful for Thargoids.

I got my combat Elite in this Crusader killing Scouts. Used a lot of Guardian stuff to save on engineering. And it worked quite nicely
The medium hardpoints can have anything you like in them. I had 2 flak launchers while fooling around interceptors, then i switched to normal multicannons, then termalvent beams (used only to cool off after burning the corrosion).

It works quite nicely in normal pve too :)
