Guide to learning Flight Assist Off (complete series)

For anyone interested in learning about the differences in E: D's flight mechanics, and then learning how to actually pilot your craft in all conditions with no flight assists so you yourself can then decide when to toggle betweeen the two modes.

Part 1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWrvKoUJOEw
Part 2 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69R_4ufsNYU
Part 3 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLYOHn6aLpQ

or full playlist - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtywH7XtIZ0OJd8EM8TKw-fTGGCWJCSoq

Part 1 covers the basics of the differences between each mode, part 2 suggests practical lessons in how to get to grips with piloting with no assists in the first place, and finally part 3 expands on how to use what we've learnt 'with' combat tactics to be a threat against the hardest of hostiles.

Any feedback is always welcome.

Edit: I have subsequently found out an error. In part 3 (chapter 7) concerning shield strength, as much as the test in this chapter is accurate once your shields have failed completely, and even when charging each shield ring when NOT under attack, but when your shields ARE under attack, adding more 'pips' to systems (presumably the more the better) and even with an already full capacitor, does give your shield a boost and makes your shields stronger as long as they are active, so a quick divert of 'pips' to systems WHEN under attack will be an effective tactic, like I say, even with an already full capacitor. 'Pips' to SYStems have two functions, power distribution if it's needed AND boosting the system.

So please ignore my statements about shields' strength, have added an annotation correction, my worst nightmare is to be misleading for being a muppet! Was an additional subject I thought I'd include, this won't effect the flight mechanics described, all the more reason to get proficient at the sequential boosting tactic in the previous chapter so as not to get hit at all!

These are fantastic. You've given me something to do in ED till 1.3. Thank you.

Awesome work, wish I had this link for one of my posts a few days back. I prefer to keep throttle in forward only & Keep the reverse thrust axis separate on the throttle hat switch. Also rudder pedals are great for assigning lateral thrust to the toe brakes. Still, it's all about what works best for each user.

Great stuff

Have some rep and 1st round of beer is on me :) . Really appreciate the "outside ED screens" in your lessons, makes understand FA on/off much easier.

Is there an advantage with flight assist off? I tried it once but after tumbling helplessly through space I turned it back on and never looked back...

Yes, several advantages:

-moving your joystick more
-getting carpal tunnel syndrome faster than any player
-looking like a drunk pirate in space
-dodging attacks unintentionally
-admiring the milky way in combat

and much, much more

Kinda funny how some people can be completely crap at something, then assume everyone else will be equally as bad. The points above describe your flying ability, I can assure you it's not the same for many others.

Wow, this is a very professional guide to FA off!!! I will have to rewind very often the tape because English is not my mother language and you speak very fast and smoothly for my level of comprehension, but it's ok! ;)
I hope to learn more than my basic FA off knowledge with your vids. +rep for the awesome work.

People can adapt to anything and become proficient at it.

The fact is every aircraft and spacecraft has one or more types or stability augmentation systems / reaction control systems.

Turning off FA is like flying a brick with thrusters made out of compressed air cans.
I'm sure many will adapt and do quite well.

Just a quick post to say thank you kindly for all those who have commented and rep'd this thread that I created this morning. I have never received upwards of nearly 30+ reputation points ever for a single thread in its entirety, let alone in half a day, so you are all very kind and I am very pleased to hear you think it will be of use to you all.

I am truely thankful you have taken the time to post comments and rep'd me. It has been a labour of love creating these guides over the past few months and so this response makes it all the more worth while. So thank you again, it is hugely appreciated.

Cmdr Lancer

P.S: I'm not sure how, or if it is possible, to repay the reputation for those who did rep the thread but hadn't left a comment, I have returned the rep for these forum users who have taken the time to comment and rep, by rep(ing) their comment, but would like to return the favour for these users who rep'd but like I say, hadn't left a comment, if anyone can advise on how to do this please let me know.

Don't feel obliged buddy. Rep is given freely. :)

If however you would like to check up on someone who has repped you, you can click on "settings" in the top right corner of this forum interface. At the bottom of settings you can see who has repped you. You can then click on their names, and then click on "show latest posts" or something like that. You can then give rep to them via their posts.

Fly safe Commander. :)
