Hand Gestures..

... and no, no middle finger!

I thought it would be cool, if we could make hand gestures, for whatever reason.
Ideally, visible from other CMDRs in and out of your cockpit.

Just a few basic animations like a Fist Pump, a friendly wave, salute, and many others.
Some could even be a bit dynamic, for example, pointing at a target, and your hand tracks it temporarily.

I have no idea on how to perform such actions. Maybe select a target from the contacts menu, and use a similar menu to docking requests to perform a variety of hand gestures? I dunno. Lol

It would fit in well with my next idea, the Kill Cam!

Hmmm... hello, CSH.

I think many of your ideas are fantastic, but this one, not so much.

Appropriate body language is a very subjective thing. If FD does this, I fear they'll have too strong a temptation to have some of this automatically trigger at certain times - such as a fist pump when an enemy is destroyed, if the player isn't moving the joystick (or other equivalent) at the time.

Potentially, it could just be purely optional, but this is FD we're talking about: they want people to see their work - and I think it would be quite hard for them to justify doing that much work, unless enough players can see it by default.

I can see that happening, all too easily - and I can see it becoming quickly annoying and fairly easy to forget about, until it triggers again.

What's more, I'm British. No offence to our American contributors, but it would feel horrible for me to have my avatar suddenly start expressing himself with such an American style of bodily communication. Younger British players probably wouldn't mind, but - again, for me - the level of cognitive dissonance would be epic and it would last for weeks. Not fun at all.

I feel the same (surprisingly!), so I would make them a manual activation thing, not something that happens based what's going on automatically.

Although, a few hand gestures would be ok if set off automatically, but rarely, such as covering your face with your arms when the canopy blows, or your ship is about to explode.
Because IMHO, when something that dangerous is happening, and your CMDR is still sat comfortably, not flinching, is quite odd. Lol

But fist pumping, pointing, waving, waving both your hands in the air like a crazy person, etc would all be a manual thing you trigger yourself.

I used to drive a Reliant Scimitar car and it was quite good fun in that we always saluted another Scimitar driver (just raising your hand), it was amazing how automatic the recognition became and when I (reluctantly) moved to another car I really missed the camaraderie that the Scimitar Driver's Club afforded.

So yeah you could have a furrylancer owner's club salute.

Wouldn't fast gestures (like fist pumps and waves) be impractical in zero gee?

I imagine this to be something that would be developed with the space legs thing. Personally....I can't see any pilots in other ships anyway so gestures would be wasted. Might be cool for SRV though.
