Newcomer / Intro Hate this stupid game

I have a friend who plays this and he badgered me to play it and he's a really good mate, so I bought it.

What a waste of time and money.

Hours spent trying to land a ship in the tutorial with the blue light underneath me and facing a HUGE arrow only to find out that I am facing the wrong way. Could the tutorial have told me that the chevrons it meant were the ones on my dash and not on the ground? Or just say, y know, "The reason you are bouncing off the platform and not landing despite me giving you nice blue circles is because your ship is facing the wrong way. I don't know that other end is the front.

Then finally landing after help from said mate and going to Dalton Station only to not be able to land again in time and getting blown up. That was really fun.

Started again and went back to Dalton. Before I could enter and despite having permission and landing gear down, they decided to attack me and boom. Wasn't going very fast or very slow. Just boom. Even my experienced friend has no idea why the station attacked me.

So I start again and I need to find a mission to make some credits and I take on this mission to get synthetic meat because it was the only mission at the station that I was eligible for. I'll save you the lengthy story but an hour or so later I realise the nearest place to get some is beyond the range of a starter ship. So it's offered at the beginner's terminal because ...? And the game made me eligible for it because it knew I didn't have the fuel capacity and it's the dev's idea of a joke?

So, log in again. Zero eligible missions this time. Fly back to Dalton to see if they have changed their attitude. Didn't blow me up for no reason this time. Wow. Land the ship within the alloted time. Find a mission to go to Ervate and take someone's briefing notes or something. Lauch and I am exiting the station at the lowest end of the nice, happy blue speed and it tells me I have a trespassing violation and will be destroyed in 1.30 minutes. For what? I am leaving, with permission and not trespassing and ! Gives me a 400cr fine.

So I plot for Ervate, jump, sail past beautiful universe and as I get closer there's a bloody sun and I alter course and then whoosh past Ervate slightly and then head back but somehow the sun has gotten between me and Ervate (how?) in like 5 seconds and then I am overheating and boom again. All in the space of about 20 seconds.

There's that's my experience of playing this game. It was not fun. I was not entertained. All I learnt was about how not to design a game.

I too had the same experience as you had about a year ago, but perseverance and plain stubborness prevented me from quiting, I will not be defeated by a game, so I continued playing, I am now sat in Jameson Memorial with a Federal Corvette a Python and an Asp Explorer, these are al 'A' Rated and all have Grade 3 and Grade 5 Engineered Mods and I have just over 500M in credits, so I'm now aiming at getting the Imperial Cutter, and I now think I understand what Frontier are doing with this incredible game, I will keep playing until I achieve all of my self elected goals. I nearly quite so many times I couldn't count them, but like I said, I'm stubborn. I am a retired IT consultant, so I am lucky that I understand game developers, and I have lots of time to play this game, of course that's not the same for lots of other players who need to work, so Frontier do need to consider these people when making changes to the game, the game time sink is it's biggest problem, and they should concentrate on fixing the many bugs that make the game so difficult, other than that I'm now happy with the game, but it did take a long time to reach this state. some new players may not have the perserverance and will quite with the first few hours, I'm sure Frontier could make this easier, especially for the new Commander and I really do understand why players quite.

ED's learning curve is beast and requires patience with a degree of tolerance, it is designed for a certain type of gamer. There is help should you reconsider, but why don't you ask your friend to help you through the first few hours?

Your starting Sidewinder is free to replace btw just use it and abuse it to get to grips with the basics, what helped me in the early stages was not playing the game per se but treating each gaming session as a lesson where I tried different things out.

The game is not easy to get in to in my opinion. I watched a ton of videos on Youtube to learn some of the finer points. I am not a hard core gamer and didn't have the time to figure all of it out on my own, but I did have a little bit of time here and there to watch some videos. Just a suggestion. If you are posting on the forums about it, my guess is you want to like the game and are frustrated that you are having difficulty with something you think is easy, or you are just venting to ride of in to the sunset. If you are trying to learn, there are lots of resources, and unfortunately ED is not an easy game to get in to (IMO). Feel free to message me if you want some help.

As said mate...I feel bloody awful that you've had such a bad experience (and even worse that I've not had the time to help guide you more).

Flying "too slow" through a stations slot can earn you a fine. As can speeding if you have a collision. These were put in place to prevent those who prefer living under man-made-structures-that-normally-span-bodies-flowing-water causing grief to other players. Always the way in MMO's...

Flying to close to a sun and you're gonna have a bad day. Just ask Icarus.

Hopefully, if you're willing (would understand if you're not), we can try and turn your opinion of the game around. I hope so, I was looking forward to doing some exploration of this beautiful galaxy with you! :(

Hey there Commander. Your frustration is understandable. All I can say is that Elite is a difficult game to get into and I would encourage you to keep trying. Once you get past the initial learning curve it'll become a great adventure! Maybe play with your mate the first few times sof he can guide you through? It's fun to wing up and do stuff together, I promise!

So, log in again. Zero eligible missions this time..

There are a few issues with missions at the moment but i believe these are being worked on and we should see some improvement "soon" :)

It is frustrating us all as it has a meta affect on the game but it's good to know FD are working towards a solution.

A steep learning curve which we have all been through. Stick with it because it will make sense and its worth it. Those tutorials are there for a reason...

Elite Dangerous puts you through hell for the first few hours of play.

Either you make it to the other side or you don't :)

OP, I hear you. But give the game a chance - if you can get a start, it has plenty to offer.

Two words to the OP - Docking Computer.

I nearly quit because of the awful nature of manual landing, bought a DC and it transforms the game.

I wonder how many new players Frontier lose due to not having an auto-dock option as standard on the starter sidewinder.

As others have written, watch the training videos, complete the voice-guided tutorials and some of the combat training missions - I think the last one maybe difficult to complete as a beginner.

Then just treat the game proper for the first week(s) as an advanced tutorial where losing your starting sidewinder ship will effectively be free as you can restart your save. Once you upgrade your ship you need to take extra care.

Then wing up with your friend(s) so that they can show you the ropes. There's also the Galactic Academy (link at the top of this page).

Also don't forget to RTFM -I didn't at the beginning but could see I was missing some vital information.

Shame you didn't learn how to watch the instruction videos or read the manual.

The game is unforgiving of people who think they know best and just jump in and give it a go - usually with disastrous results.

A little bit of time spent learning the basics is well worth it, this game is great once you learn how to fly your ship.

OP - if you want help there are many on here that will help you but you need to ask for it. Writing a rant on the ED forum is not going to get you the help you need.

It would be a good idea (once you have done the tutorials at least) to wing up with a mate and get them to show you the ropes in game. The learning curve is steep even if you do take the time to read manuals and do tutorials. Trouble is a lot of games now don't require you to do this so it can be a real culture shock at first. Stick with it fro a few hours and get to know the ropes (ideally with help). After that then you will be in a position to know for sure if this game is for you or not.

Google....

To add to that yes yes I know to play a game one shouldn't have to go through numerous web sites or watch what feels like a season's worth of TV on YouTube, but I guess welcome to gaming in the year 2016, hell have you ever played Warframe....

I diddnt read the OP TBH, as I saw the title and thought nah can't be bothered with reading yet another let's slag the game off just cause I found it a wee bit hard to get going, and I'm by no means a fanboy of elite (wait hang on I love Elite, just not so much in love with the way it's going or gone) or its developers.

As someone said up thread if you diddnt play them then play the NEW training missions vastly improved to what they were, I only found that out by going into one to set up a controller for use with my SRV.

Again having trouble with any game in this day and age, then again its hold on let me boot up google ...ahh ok I see, so that's how you do it .. that and these forums and reddit are a host of information for the new player.

And without trying to bait or add flames, really the title of the thread made me envisage a five year old boy whose ice cream has slipped off the cone and is now sticking his bottom lip out saying I hate you I hate you I hate you....

I watched the tutorials but the initial docking process still nearly made me ragequit. Its an awful mechanic for an introduction to a wonderful game.

There is a huge learning curve, not helped by the huge amount of controls and subtle need to knows about the game, all of which most players just take for granted after a while.

Take a few breaths and try again... Try the tutorials, watch some demonstration videos, or just ask for help (here or in game).
