Headline on Startup screen dated today, "Thargoids unexpectedly withdraw from core systens".

I would say that yes, they're doing a rethink, and maybe they'll do the Eve Online approach....and then I realized, nope, there's nothing the players own like stations that can be put at risk by Thargoids, so until that changes, players aren't going to care that much about them.

I suppose they could attack Fleet Carriers though.

Precisely. No stakes, no consequences, no threat.

Would this be related to the community goal?

Sounds like they're just all heading back to defend their meta alloy source.

Lol noone read the other galnet articles, super interested, lol.

Reading between the lines:

FDev realizes that if they don't change course the entire bubble will be destroyed at the rate they're going and nobody cares, nobody is repairing stations, and nobody is fighting Thargoids other than for the occasional novelty of it and a few grind monkeys intent on keeping their favorite system and most of their Thargoid content is going completely ignored and unused by the player base. They need to rethink and rebalance this whole Thargoid thing while they still have players to engage.

And the galaxy map was being obliterated by all the Thargoid incursion bookmarks, annoying everybody else who had no interest in them...

They have collected enough specimens, confirmed that we are a war-like species that kills its own as well as other species, our weapons and ships can be destroyed and are led by masters that seem to be perpetually at war with each other.

Sounds like they've done their homework.

maybe the Thargoids had a forum vote and decided to move to the Cone Sector....so after the next server tick, they'll be 12 LY farther out than they are now.

Nah. They decided that killing all these PVE players for their yummy void-frozen carcasses were too much of a grind, when they can just pick up a six pack of human thighs for just 200 ARXes.....

Precisely. No stakes, no consequences, no threat.

That sums things up nicely. Thargoids have been "the optional menace" since inception and by design.

TBH thargoids could have been the perfect tool to downsize the bubble, and maybe rethink the hyperspace travel to reshape exploration and pathfinding gameplay. They could (and should) have been both terrifying and game shaping.

They are just an other disjointed ride in the park.

Thargoids Withdraw from Core Systems
Reports indicate that the Thargoids have abruptly withdrawn from the majority of human-occupied space.
Admiral Aden Tanner, chief military liaison for Aegis, announced:
“Multiple reliable sources have reported a mass departure of Thargoid craft. Their forces vanished from dozens of locations within hours of each other. Only the Maia and Merope systems are still reporting Thargoid activity.”
“Our theory is that the Thargoids have retreated due to our defence operations depleting their numbers. Then again, they may simply be reconsidering their strategy. Either way, Aegis will continue to monitor the situation.”
In response, Professor Ishmael Palin of the Palin Research Centre offered words of warning:
“Celebrating any kind of victory over the Thargoids would be premature. We have no proof that their withdrawal was a result of human activity, and this action is at odds with their highly territorial nature. Nevertheless, this is still a significant – if mysterious – development.”

Just like the sea retreating before a tsunami, hopefully.
Or maybe something (much) worse than the Thargoids is on the way, and the Thargoids are GTFO?!

So the Motherships have been repaired and are about to launch, bring back the fleet and support the motherships on the way to the bubble
