Ah ok so this was more my experience. I've seen videos of people lazily being able to look around without getting shot and wondered what that was about.
For me and my friend, we were fired upon on arrival just like this video. Which one would expect. Except for all those videos of people just looking around with free cam and not getting shot.
When I arrived in the Maelstrom, I had few minutes to gawk and wipe the drool of my chin. The (are we allowed to call them Titans yet?)... the center of the Maelstrom was frikkin' awesome in VR. And very scary. VERY scary. When I got past the pulse (I got two of them) I first noticed the caustic damage to have stopped but nothing much else, and then I slowly turned my ship to look around and HOLY FREAKING CRAP WHAT IS THAT. The scale was just mind blowing.
I then observed a few Interceptors of all kinds going in and coming out, and had one or two Glaives patrolling around, but I stayed far away enough (and maybe cold enough - I idled at 16%) for them to not care. Until I moved closer to get a better look and was totally mesmerized, staring at the center of the thingie, and missed a Glaive sneaking up on me. Then my scanner went red all over the place.
I was in a 600+ (unarmed) Recon Mamba, but the Glaive was really glued to my behind. It did not care about running cold by popping heatsinks, but I managed to run away; I went silent running and seemed to be able to gain distance, but that might have been a coincidence. In the end I got out with 8% hull left.
Not been back since, but it was awesome.
