Newcomer / Intro Hello, its my first day, and i have few questions

Hello fellow commanders,

As some of you, i just logged in for the first time yesterday, and started my new "solo" game. Thanks to many years in EvE, you cannot trust anyone, until you trust yourself.

Last week i tested the combat training, therefore decided to change my X axis to YAW from ROLL. Considering that i'm using a keyboard/mouse combo, this seemed more logical. Any comments on that? I mean, should i go back to X-Roll and try to get used to that?!?

After some mumboJumbo stuff, i pick a "bring something something" mission without reading carefully, then tried to find that specifid commodity around the systems, cannot find it and i had to abondoned my mission. So, first question, whats the easiest way to find a specific trade item in the galaxy map? do i have to enter each system, check each station from system map and see what they import/export?

Later on, i decided to reset my save, start new, find my eagle, sold it and took a "kill 2 pirates" mission. I went to the relevant system and try to find those buggers while flying around in supercruise. i found one accidentaly, killed him, then try to find last one for ALMOST ONE HOUR. then i spotted a nav beacon, saw a cargo ship, he begged me that there is a misunderstanding, a greater goal, told me to spare him and meet him in a specific system/station. First, i opened relevant system map, i'm sure its the correct system (which i took the mission) but the station he told me is not there. So i decided to kill him for lying to me and for some space fireworks.

My problem here is, why the station he told me doesnt exist? and why there isnt any indicator that my mission is FINISHED? because after spending another hour trying to find another pirate ship (because i thought my mission was not finished) i gave up, returned to my home system after few slingshot misses, docked to a random station, and i saw that i could complete the mission via contacts.

Another one is, most of the topics i read, experienced commanders always advice newbies to buy a cargo ship and deliver stuff. Considering that i dont know the ship names complately yet, which is the most accessible, multi-purpose ship i can buy early on? What weapons systems you advice? I bought a wanted detection system but havent find the chance to use it, how it works? automaticaly?

I hope to learn the ropes fast and see you guys someday, and poke you with my ships butt!

Also, is there a platform to meat people for alliance/clan/gang purposes?

With my best regards,
Glywen Alderean

I'm an old school Elite player so take what I say with a pinch of salt but I'd say pitch/roll on stick is the best. Elite has always been about dogfighting style combat - think F18 sim rather than quake in space.

So, first question, whats the easiest way to find a specific trade item in the galaxy map?
Look at the filters tab on the galaxy map - you can filter on a specific commodity if you like.

You should buy an Adder after selling your Eagle - very multipurpose ship on early stages.
Kill Warrant scanner you can bind to a button and fire it like a weapon to scan your target (this must be in range and you must press the button all the time)
First Thing on updates - a lot of cargo space.

I would try to get used to roll as yaw is very slow, in combat situations it is easier to roll and fly up / down to get onto your target.

Using the Galaxy map you can select which commodity you are looking for and so long as the release fixed the tool you should be able to see which systems are importing and which are exporting what you require.

With pirates I found it best to grab a few cheap tons of cargo and drop into all USS in the system you are requested to hunt in. They will scan you and attack if they are truly pirates making it easier to complete mission. To get more USS slow right down to a crawl in supercruise and it seems more appear.

Not sure about the missing station, a lot of system names are very similar so one letter / number different could be the problem. Never had this problem in Beta and gamma myself.

To avoid missing destination in supercruise start to slow to the middle of the blue area on the throttle at 8 seconds to destination and the ship will slow you down automatically.

As for ships I cannot advise as I have stuck with my free eagle and pimped it out for combat. For weapons go for gimballed ones, they track your target and aim for you. For kill warrant scanner assign it to a weapons group and once within range you must stay locked on target in range and hold the fire button dowen until it reads complete.

good luck commander

I have a very sensitive mouse and having roll on it just resulted in constant rolling. So I ended up doing what you did and put roll on QE, and Thruster control on mouse wheel. Pitch up and down is on WS.

As for the rest of your points, there is no real good answer which will not result in some kind of new frustration. Want to know what good station is selling? Go and poke, have pen and paper ready to note or use one of the freely available software solutions made by community members.

Hauler is your first cargo specific ship, then you have Cobra MK 3 and Type 6. Any ship can haul cargo as long as you buy cargo modules.

With noting that the kill warrant scanner is not a wanted detector, your normal sensors will do that if you target someone and keep them in your sights.

The KW scanner will allow you to detect bounties on a target from other jurisdictions, and is an active scan (you'll need to put it on a firegroup). It will increase your bounty income by about a third on average.

Thanks for all the lovely answers.

i figured out how to use the galaxy map from a tutorial video, but thanks for the replies.

So, KW only tells me if there's a bounty etc. so, its not that usefull then.

Also, if i'm looking for pirates, does jettisoning some stuff really pulls them in to me?

And for ships, first Adder, then Cobra it seems.

If you kill an enemy, you will only get the bounty for system you are currently in when you kill them. The Kill Warrant Scanner (once you scan a target) will grant you outstanding bounties that they have accrued elsewhere. This is particularly useful in Anarchy systems where there is no system authority at all, and thus no-one local to assign and pay out bounties.

Hello fellow commanders,

Welcome to the Pilot's Federation, Commander.

Yes, you definitely should. Ships in Elite: Dangerous have abysmal yaw rates - the flight model is built around roll and pitch, much like flying a plane. It's often much faster to roll and pitch into a target than it is to yaw onto them.

A good early multi-role ship is the Adder. But don't discount what you can do to your sidewinder to make it more useful, too. You can more than double its cargo capacity with some upgrades.

Good Luck Commander
