Newcomer / Intro Help finding my mission target

Hi all

So I have a mission assigned to me in the Eulexia system. The details are

Salvage 1 Structural Regulator
  • We need you to find the missing Structural Regulator
  • These goods are unique to this mission and if lost, cannot be replaced
  • We have intelligence to say they'll be in the ROSS 1047 system
  • Take the items to the Noon Base in Eulexia
  • You will receive your reward upon delivery
  • Good luck CMDR JudgeDredd

So, I'm at the ROSS 1047 system and I'm just not sure what to do or where to begin. Is it floating around in space? If so, is there any indication of where? If not, How can I find the item? There are so many different things that show up - but just other ships, planets or perhaps FSDs

I just don't really know where to start - so any help on what I should be looking out for would be great. Do these things hang around floating around anywhere? Near Nav Beacons? floating around planets or bases?

I'm assuming this thing is not on a planet as another mission I looked at said it wasn't suitable because I didn't have a Rover - and this one mentioned nothing about needing a Rover.

Thank you

If you haven't figures it out yourself by now....before you accepted the mission from the Mission Board you should have seen a couple of (i) info messages with a couple of hints.

So you can either drop into the Nav Beacon POI (in normal space not supercruise); use the Target Ahead keybinding to lock onto the Nav Beacon (alternative is to target it through the Contacts not Navigation tab), fly close enough to it to initiate a scan to receive a 'Mission Updated' message.
The message will indicate which celestial body (normally a planet) you need to travel to find the mission-specific Unidentified Signal Source (USS) where your salvage target will be floating around. There'll also be a mission icon next to the planet in your Navigation tab on the left-HUD.
The USS can sometimes take a little time to find but just fly around the planet.

Alternatively scan the system with your Discovery Scanner by firing it, but the mission will only update if the Mission USS is within range of this optional scanner: Basic 500ls; Intermediate: 1000ls; Advanced: System-wide

These missions really frustrated me at first. Mainly because I didn’t get how to scan the Nav Beacon. So I’d be flying around the system honking with my basic discovery scanner. 500 or even 1000 LS is a tiny fraction of most systems.

So I bought the Advanced Discovery Scanner. Best decision I ever made. Except for when I decided to quit playing Golf. Ping the system, get a message, fly to the location, slow down, then wait for the next message. Target it in the nav panel and go. If the signal source has your item, it will be blue, no need to investigate other USS.

Don’t forget how many items to pick up; usually there are several. You will get another message saying the objective has been completed.
Just as you’re about to scoop up the item, don’t be surprised if an NPC drops in and starts shooting. Be quick about it and get out.

Once I rammed the canister I was picking up – mainly because someone else was shooting at me. And I apparently destroyed it. Spent quite a while searching all of the other canisters while trying not to get shot. If that happens, get back into Supercruise and honk the system again, and a new location will be announced.

In my opinion these types of mission are a lot easier to work since the mission systems were changed at 2.1.

What the poster above said:

Now you have to really watch out for those NPC's. (Hint: Do not leave you ship parked on the surface while looking for salvage. I've been destroyed in the SRV once since the NPC's started prowling. Replacement of SRV after destruction: 1500credits. Replacement of ship: There goes your insurance).

You supercruise to the nav beacon, drop to normal space, continue closing on the nav beacon. Once you're in range the scan should commence automatically.
