Newcomer / Intro Help needed to add a Detailed Surface scanner into a Hauler's Internal compartments

Hi.
Currently with a Hauler...
Am looking to add a Detailed SurfaceScanner to go with the inhouse Basic DS...but when I do it looks like I have to replace the Basic DS. I was under the impression you can have both ??

Have been reading around & must be missing something here...do I have to get rid of something else from the Internal Compartments to free up space?

(only upgrades are: Shield Generator E2 to a D2, Both E2 Cargo Racks (4 cargo apiece) to E3 (8 cargo apiece)

Any advice is appreciated.

The basic discovery scanner takes one internal compartment space.

The detailed surface scanner take another internal compartment space. So yes - two spaces.

You can get an advanced discovery scanner too but you are safe enough replacing the basic discovery scanner with that.

You have to give up another compartment.

I would suggest putting it in the size 2 compartment where your shield is.

Drop the shield into one of the size 3 compartments where you have a cargo compartment. I would also suggest a size three shield in that size three compartment.

Yep, you have to give up a cargo compartment. But can gain a really nice shield.

Ah one more thing a nice big size three fuel scoop, yep all cargo gone.

Gonna have to lose a cargo rack or the shield. One or the other. If you are exploring, hauling is kind of a waste of time anyways. Likewise if you are hauling, exploring individual planets is a waste of time.

That being said, you could just upgrade to a cobra, but you'll want to save up a bit first.

cheers. Will keep the Basic DS for now as replacing it with the Advanced DS is too pricey for what I need at the mo.

cheers. So, bin one of the E3 cargo racks...and replace my upgraded D2 Shield with a better Shield in there (bigger size3? filling that compt. up?)...leaving the old Shield size 2 compt. empty?/ where the Detailed SS can now fit?? It's like that little flat square toy from years ago where there you move 8 squares around as the 9th space is empty!

cheers. Will need to keep a shield, as have been known to almost get KO'd through Interdiction, (despite the usual submit, charge, boost & weave etc) So will get rid of one of my upgraded E3 Cargo racks...& then put the Detailed SS in there?

Think I am stuck in compromise...in that I want to explore for a bit..going a good way out...& would like the odd "Discovered By" tags to my name on the System views (which the Detailed SS gives if you are the first to sell that info to UC)...& also need to make a few CRs on the way to help fund things.

You should always put the same size module in the same size compartment. FYI the game refers to the size as 'class' so yes, a class 3 shield for a class 3 compartment is the way to go.

And yes, it's either trading or exploration. It is possible to own multiple ships and have one rigged for trading, one for exploration, one for mining, one for killing etc.

Yeah...will go down the exploring route then with this ship, with the upgrades/sizes/classes as discussed...and then come back to trading later

A properly kitted out hauler is about... 3.5 million credits? A bit under 200K insurance, so minimum before setting out 4 million credits.

Exploring is expensive. Scanning 1000 to 1500 systems will pay for that, your mileage may vary.
