Help with workshop item

If you've got the paths on grid, move it out of the way and then use the paths as a guide to build the barriers, then move the building back. You should be able to do the barriers without moving it, but I find it is usually easier to move things out of the way, get the barriers down, and then move things back with precision using the X key and then the arrows.

Either that, or just move it slightly and build the barriers just outside of it with it right there as a guide, then move it back. Or build the barriers incorrectly and then use the ability to select a post and drag it around to move it right where you need it, which is usually way more precise than just straight building it.

For this job, I'd probably use that last method, of building incorrectly and then dragging all the posts one at a time where I need them.

Many options, hope one works for you!

You're only allowed to get so close to paths with the barriers so if you drag a post to where the barrier connected to it is too close to the path (pretty much on it) it will give you that message. You gotta be real precise with things, even the rotation of the post if it's a fence with a large post footprint, to get them all lined up tight to the path if that's what you're trying to do. You'll get the hang of it if you just keep trying and practicing!

Each zoo I make comes together nicer, and easier, than the one before it, so I'm still learning and improving...and I've got around 350 hours of playtime.

For me this comes back to my core criticism. It just shouldn’t be this difficult to build or do very basic things. I’m not giving up but it is a massive flaw of the game in my view.

Can't you just use the "null" barrier? The walls of the building act as fences already.

I almost said the same thing when I first answered, but it looks to me like the barrier is used as part of the whole appeareance of it when I look at the steam workshop images. This one in particular:
