Hey! Why does FD still charge $$$ for the base game?

Destiny 2 is free now (the base game that is; you still need to pay for expansions). Frontier should do the same. Besides, no one will stop at the base game once they realize that you need Horizons if you don't fancy flying around in your A-rated death boat.

I was going to suggest you were 20 or less. However your avatar suggests otherwise. (I had 2 of them).

It's almost as if they have a marketing department that has looked at this, and decided that right now it isn't something they need to do :p

Uhm, FarCry 3 is not free yet! Nor the base game, neither the dlcs...
Most games cost money, that's not really new or odd.
In my opinion they should make base game and Horizons one package and done though.

There are people who CAN'T play Horizons, for example those whose cards don't support compute shaders or who are running 32bit system.
And Fdev's monetary plan is quite different from Bungie's, if you hadn't noticed. Or are you suggesting that putting the base game free and selling a mandatory DLC for 60 bucks would be improvement over what Elite sells for, now?

Don't you remember the Horizons Crisis?
Oh boy, that was an ugly time. Chaos mutants roaming the streets, marauding and setting everything on fire. Friends fighting each others, lambs eating lions, sun not rising and a huge red moon in the sky.
It was the end times.

Just because FDev had the, rather good I might add, idea to include the base game in the Horizon season.

And now you want to open the gates of hell again by suggesting that the base game should be free? Somebody will probably scream for an Exterminatus anytime soon.

32bit support was killed off long ago. Check your launcher. ;)

To me, F2P means "avoid that game", because shenanigans are almost guaranteed. (If you don't pay money upfront for a game, you normally get a sales pitch disguised as a game, instead of an actual game designed first and foremost to be a game.)

While there are exceptions (Destiny, or the hypothetical Elite) the occasional misjudgement seems a small price to pay for what has proved a profoundly efficient quality-filter.

If Elite was free (and it wouldn't surprise me if that happened after the new expansion next year), and if I was somehow unfamiliar with Elite, I would see "free" and assume it was less than it is, unless they re-marketed it as a free demo. ("Demo" can reassure me that it's an up-front-purchase game with a limited try-before-buy. To me, free demo is different from F2P)

-Free on PC until Nov 18th...basically a time limited promotion.
-also, Loot Boxes

That's just me skimming the surface of the Destiny 2 monetization, a game that doesn't interest me enough to dig further, but leaves me with little doubt it has plenty of other ways to milk their players.
We're talking Activision-Blizzard here.
Pretty hilarious to suggest that company does anything out of sheer sympathy for their customers.

Elite I is free in the Frontier store now. So ED may be free in ,, oh maybe 30 years , or whenever the other major publishers decide to make a niche astro-scoped game like ED in the future..

Most likely because of the LEP issue and how Horizons was introduced, IMO.

My belief is that it's Beyond time that Frontier simply merged the base game and Horizons and just sold it for a single price. Here we are, 5+ years since release, after all.

I paid full price for base game and expansion- I don't feel like I'm being "cheated" when I've gotten far more than my monies worth out of the game thus far.

I can't speak for those with LEP's... but I do indeed sympathize with them on the fiasco of the "Seasons" direction of DLC, which was an utter disaster.

All this. ...though I don't think its been a fiasco.

After Beyond finishes, Elite: Dangerous should simply be sold as a package with Base/Horizons/Beyond in there.
In reality its no different to heavily discounting the base game and horizons DLC but it'll at least allow the dev team to focus on one fully functioning model.
And will make comms and marketing more streamlined.
...and on the forums we can stop referring to all those old, out of date titles. :)

I say "fiasco" because of the model changes mid-drift. After they sold the LEP to people- they completely changed the model, yet didn't offer a way for those who'd purchased it to change their investment. Rather Frontier basically said "deal with it", without considering how their own course may have changed the perceived "value" of the product they purchased.

The big question there is... how does one determine "value" of a future product that hasn't yet even been detailed? ;)
