Horizons = New laptop required, please help with spec

You'll be able to play the game on a £1000 laptop like the G751. If budget isn't a problem hey, get a £2000 laptop. If budget is a problem chose the components to get the best graphics card possible. You only need an i5 processor for example.

OK so with horizons beta announced yesterday I've only gone and done it! Just ordered a 17" optimus vii laptop (see full spec below) from PC Specialists....so excited, can't wait for this baby to come through the door, should arrive just in time!:D

Thanks to you all for your advice and input which was much appreciated even though it meant I've well and truly blown the original 750 budget by spending 940 pounds! That said, I do think that I have got myself quite a good deal for that spec.

Looks to be a very good system there, I do hope you enjoy seeing the universe of Elite Dangerous as so many of us have been seeing it. There's another thread around here somewhere, Granite Ant started it I believe, where graphics config options are discussed, you may want to check that out and see what you can change in the config file to really get the most of out the graphics, there's also SweetFX and some other graphics boosters you can add, complete with all kinds of suggestions from the community on making it just eye-meltingly gorgeous.

Thanks, I will definitely check that out! :)

THE best way to play this game is in VR. Have you factored that in at all?
The GTX 960m won't push sufficient FPS to a Rift or Vive to make playing an experience that doesn't lead to sea-sickness.

Sure, it'll push enough frames to a 1080p screen with some settings turned down, but I believe a full-fat GTX970 will be the minimum hardware requirement.

No VR for me yet I'm afraid :( I've already stretched the budget to get that spec. This will have to do me for season 2 i think, however I do have the life time expansion pass so maybe another upgrade to include VR could be in order further down the line. :)

I looked at the price of that laptop. I can only think you need a laptop for its portability. I just built a system for £726 excluding the dk2 (paid extra 275 for) but which includes windows and the game. Could have poss paid 80 to 100 less but got a bit impatient :)

I5 4690k
Msi Gtx 970 twin frozr
Msi z97 gaming mobo
8 gb gskill 2133 ram
Thrustmaster hotas
Xfx 650w psu 80+ gold
Cooler master hyper 103 cpu fan
Dvd player
250 gb hd
Backlit keyboard
LED optical mouse
Windows 7
elite dangerous
Already had a case and monitor, but these can be sourced cheaply off eBay 2nd hand. also involves self build but I did mine from a Web tutorial, fairly easy and saved I reckon about £200-250 maybe more.

Parts sourced from eBay, scan and maplins. Only the hotas and Dvd player were second hand.

That would put you in a good position to save up for Vr without changing pc. Dk2 should fall in price on ebay in new year.

One thing, I had sourced most of the parts before I discovered scans deals of the week. Could have saved more :(

Edit: just seen you bought it, well something to consider next time round, and the above spec will be even cheaper in 12 months

I personaly think this laptop is waste of money, considering the limited memory and low end grapich card, 2gb Vram is kinda nothing.
If you need to buy a laptop becouse of space or whatever, I'd suggest to buy one with decent memory and GPU + the option to connect external grapichs card via... thunderbolt i guess... I think razor got sg like this and msi... but msi got some pritty good laptop.

If you got space for a monitor, then you can easily build a microatx or even itx computer for half the price. For 1600pounds you can easily build a monster in a very small box and buy a relativly good monitor.

Like
i7 4760K
16gb ram
gtx 980ti or Fury becouse of the space
2x 256gb ssd
850W platinum PSU
the micro atx or itx case
a compatible motherboard

I built a 2011 v3 5820K micro atx computer with 32gb ram and a 980gti for 1800pounds and it got watercooling:)

Rubbish. I have an i7 lappy with the gtx860m and am running everything maxed out and using the rift.

This laptop will be fine.

You don't realy need the i7 for gaming, a i5 should be sufficient and you could get a better GPU instead.

Who is the manufacturer of the laptop you posted?

PS Forget about it, looks like everything with a 970m will be more like 1100 pounds.
Laptop i7s are basically desktop i5s. I pretty sure it is the same number of cores between the two, and similar clock speed. If you are gaming on a laptop, an i7 is pretty much necessary. I remember playing games that were cpu bound on my laptop, even with an i7. Being on a desktop with an i7 now is quite nice, especially when people say you don't need more than an i5 for gaming, but then complain about how cpu intensive bots are in certain games. Some games just aren't well optimized with cpu, and some games can't be. I see having a high end cpu being just as important for gaming as a gpu. If you are on a budget, a cheaper one can definitely suffice for most situations, but if you have the money, it won't be wasted spending on something higher end.

But for mobile cpus, the performance most closely resembles the desktop model one step down. gpus aren't as significant, I think, but they tend to have much lower life expectancy. I remember my laptop could run every game maxed out at 1080p when it was new, but a couple years later it could barely run those same games maxed out at 720p, let alone newer games. The two main problems with laptops are firstly price, and secondly heat management. It just isn't possible to get good airflow through a laptop, and if you plan to do gaming on it, expect to be replacing it on something like a three or four year cycle. Though performance requirements are probably mellowing out, now that the new console generation is well on its way. So anything that can run new games can probably run anything that comes out in the next decade. Probably not maxed graphics, but any game in the near future should be playable at least.

How's your laptop with Horizon's OP? I need a new laptop too - my work laptop (which is pretty powerful and has a separate graphics card) no longer cuts it. Before anybody asks, it does need to be a laptop so I can sit on my sofa with the rest of the family. I like to spend time with them physically, even if mentally I'm flying around the stars :)

How did this laptop go?

Hi all,

I‘ve been playing ED since premium beta on a stock HP pavilion 15" laptop (AMD A8 with on board graphics) and although the game runs, as you can imagine it's on low settings and the quality is sketchy to say the least!

For a long time now I have been watching you tube vids and live streams dreaming about getting a gaming laptop so I can really appreciate this beautiful game in all it's glory. Well, with xmas coming and horizons on the......well....horizon, I've finally convinced myself it's time to part with some cash and do the right and honorable thing. I should mention at this point that I don't have a desktop and whilst I am aware of their superiority, a laptop works best for me as I can still remain accessible to the family whilst getting my fix of ED.

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to computer components so i would be very grateful for any assistance in helping me find a decent spec laptop, I don't really want to spend anymore than 750 pounds. I've found this spec for just under 700 which seems like good value, but will it provide me with a decent gaming experience?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Edit:

Thanks for everyone's input so far.

Just found a similar machine that has a 17 inch screen, Intel Core i7 4720hq quad core processor (3.6GHz) and NVIDIA GeForce gtx-960m graphics card, the only downside being 8GB ram instead of 16gb and it costs 830 pounds.....sounds tempting though as a bigger screen would be great!

Does anyone know if these better CPU and GPU specs are worth the extra money and will a drop in ram from 16GB to 8GB be an issue?
