Horizons / Odyssey Compatibility

Greetings Commanders,

We hope you enjoyed the recent alpha for the PC version of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey!

Thank you once again for your feedback and suggestions which will have a lasting impact for all future Commanders. This only marks the beginning for Odyssey. After the game launches on 19 May, we’ll continue tweaking and balancing according to your experiences, just as we have done in the past.

We know there are still a number of questions from the community, and today we’d like to give more information on the shared galaxy between Elite Dangerous: Odyssey and Elite Dangerous: Horizons.

From PC Launch:

All Elite Dangerous: Odyssey players will gain access to the new features, including planetary improvements, enhanced lighting, and textures. The differences will mean that Elite Dangerous: Horizons players cannot share a gameplay session with those playing Odyssey. However, Odyssey owners will be able to share a session with and play with those in Horizons by launching the game in Horizons mode – though if they do this, they will temporarily not have access to the new Odyssey features.

Console Launch Onwards:

In line with the console launch, we plan to update Elite Dangerous on all platforms (PC/PlayStation/Xbox) to allow Odyssey and Horizons players to reunite and play together with other users on their respective platform.

All Horizons players will also receive the new graphical updates, including the new planetary tech, lighting, and organics, free of charge, but will not be able to get out on foot or enter Odyssey’s tenuous atmospheres.

If you have any questions please leave them in the thread down below, and we will answer them as quickly as we can!

Mmmph, eh?
Not exactly sure what does actually mean

2 different clients until console launch? 20gb for horizons and 60(?)gb for Odyssey? Then unification?
No new planetary tech for non Odyssey users?
Ability to share an instance between horizons and odyssey players? (after the console launch)

I think Horizons will get the updates ... just need clarification in the way the post is written

This is a little disappointing, but understandable if it's a technical/PEGI thing.

Though, in regards to the console launch, does that mean Horizons and Odyssey players can instance with eachother at that time, or only if the Odyssey player is not on-foot?

So am I correct in thinking that at PC launch planet A will look different and / or have different geological features on both Horizons and Odyssey?

For example if a Odyssey CMDR sits in their ship on the edge of a canyon on a planet, a player in Horizons at the exact same co-ords might not see the same thing?

That's all clear, thanks for letting us know.

Except this:

"All Horizons players will also receive the new graphical updates, including the new planetary tech, lighting, and organics, free of charge, but will not be able to get out on foot or enter Odyssey’s tenuous atmospheres."

Is that after the console/later update or as of launch?

That is correct yes. Though that has been stated for a while now, Kay talked about it on both streams she did I believe. It's just previously it was only going to be console users who saw something different, now it's all users until the console release.

The announcement needs to be clarified, because the sentence starting with "All Horizons players will also receive" might belong to the section "Console Launch Onwards" or it could be a standalone statement relating to the 19th May launch.

So basically two versions which Odyssey players can pick A or B but none Odyssey get Horizons only and if you wish to join with them you must play Horizons too.

They said Horizons players would receive the tech updates. Read the message again.
The comment was correct:

On Odyssey launch, only Odyssey players get the new tech

From Console launch, everyone gets new tech.

Which does make the question: "What about BGS in Odyssey" spring to mind ;)
