Not fussed money is needed to make the game. I bought in at the beta and did some vary rough estimates but for the 50 quid I spent last year. It's probably 14 pence per hour or something silly like that now for the amount I have played it. Money well spent!

This has been asked before but I'll ask anyway as I couldn't see any answer.

I backed the game from Beta and at the time I paid £35 for the Expansion pass which would cover any cost of all major expansions, I'm guessing this is covered? if I'm wrong please let me know.

I agree with you CadetJamson it is good value for money as it's an epic game and only going to get better and better as time goes on, but I would like to know if this expansion is covered by the original expansion pass that was sold in Alpha and Beta. :)

expansion. You need ED to play Horizons.

Do you have a source for this? Because all I have read so far says otherwise.

If you're right, the deal would make a lot more sense.

It comes with the full base game, so while technically an expansion, you don't need to buy ED seperately.

If it comes with the base game, then the price makes a whole lot more sense. Though at that rate, the loyalty discount feels a tad hollow since we who currently play ED are going to be buying the game essentially twice. Or am I wrong in that assessment?

The expansions for those games had the content at release, no? EVE expansions are also included in the sub price (which can be paid via plex for those with the time and inclination, effectively making the game free for that user). The subs for those games are all largely justified by the server expense. CCP have, in the past, been very open and informative about their server tech and it is quite a technological feat for a game. Elite does not operate under the same server paradigm, so using those games as a comparison is meaningless.

I was comparing those games because others had already done so and because it shows a big difference in cost models, specifically paying by sub (which is nearly always more expensive) compared to paying for expansions.

Eve was in no way complete at launch and has had content added continuously over last ten years or so (it's easy to forget how little content, how few missions and how unplayably laggy it was in the beginning).

No idea what the sub is now but it was the equivalent of £180/year for the first two or 3 years wan't it?

Either way I don't think the costs or the way ED is being marketed is unreasonable or unfair.

If people aren't happy with it they should vote with their wallets IMO.

Nope, quite right. It's currently a pretty bad deal for existing players. Especially as public beta backers don't even get beta access if they preorder, they still need to buy the beta a second time. Even if the discount was bigger, that bit would still be a ripoff.

I would also be glad to pay 10 bucks every month. For me it is a mystery how FD can afford the personel.
Nonetheless the fun per time that game gave me until now is its weight worth in gold.
Or Painite if you like.

I dont understand why some people preorder the Expansion. Is it going to be out of stock on release? There is no reason in preordering something that is going
to be deliveret to you anyway.

For a limited time all existing Elite: Dangerous players will receive a £10 loyalty discount plus the exclusive Cobra Mark IV ship

So if i refuse to preorder i dont get the discount? Am i not loyal for backing the game during its Beta?

Remember that Elite Dangerous: Horizons isn't a single expansion, it is a season of expansions - similar to the season of features and content we've done so far. There are new features and content beyond the initial release of Elite Dangerous: Horizons.
Michael

That does not say anything, i dont know what will be in the expansions and you want me to preorder it?
No way! I think that preordering something you know nothing about is very stupid. As it is right now i will pass on the loyality discount and the ship, i will wait until this expansion pass goes down to about 10-20€ on a sale.
Considering the development of the base game it will be the right thing to do. Buying this expansion at release will mean buying a shallow expansion and waiting a few month will deliver you a shallow expansion that has been expanded a little bit more to how it should have been right from the start.

That's what I thought. Then at that rate, for existing players it might be worth it to just buy the lifetime expansions pass.

Yep, 10£ discount without beta access for my beta account is a joke.

You have backed this game ? Cool. Now it's full price !

Michael do you have any plans to expand the in-game offerings on the store? I believe there's a lot of pent-up demand for in game things like plaques to hang in the ships, lighting, UI layouts, bobbleheads, etc. It will be a great way to bring more revenue into the game, especially from those who were beta backers and get all of the expansions for free.

This was my logical path to purchasing the pass. Seemed like the best deal overall, as I'm sure I'll be playing Elite for years, even if all development stopped today.

Even though, I know for sure it will all be cheaper a month or two after release. I can't wait for that!

Why are the prices for the expension so high? !

Try to understand the enormity of what planetary landings entails.
It is not even finished with the first release and it is not the only thing you buy into with 'Horizons' either.
Basically you get a new game on planetary surfaces with it's own game mechanics and features.
All this must be developed and paid for.

NOPE, but I'm a space sim/Elite addict who almost never spends money on anything for myself (Christmas and birthdays are the only way I fill out my wardrobe). So, daddy needs his fix, take my money while I blindfold myself and put my fingers in my ears.
Same here. I'll be grumbling and bah humbugging all the way to the bank.

Sry Frontier, iam a little bit dissapointed over the pricings for the "Addons" "Expansions" "DLC" what ever you want to call it.

Seriously? You're complaining about a whole new area opening up, basically what other companies would sell as a full-priced "Part 2" game? And all that while there's so much insane crazy stuff going on?

I have always assumed that planetary landings in and of itself are as big if not bigger than the core game in regards to programming. Playing more for this expansion does not seem unreasonable to that extent...and also I have been playing for free since release. A monthly subscription would have cost me a lot lot lot more by this point

Assuming 3 airless rocky worlds on average per star system and 400 billion star systems. That is 1.2 Trillion new world sized "maps" for £40 - making each new "map" worth £3.333333333333333e-11 each - too cheap I would say ;)

I don't think the price for the expansion is too high .
From memory the "Reaper" expansion for Diablo 3 was around £35, so comparable to the £40 Horizons costs.
.
One of the complaints seems to be that if you own ED now you have to pay £40 for the Horizons content so a total of between £70 and £80 depending no how much you bought the original for, but if you buy Horizons as a newcomer you only pay £50 for the Horizons content and the original game.
.
What this argument seems to miss is that if you are a newcomer and pay the £50 for the Horizons content and the original game, you only get to start playing the original game (plus the new content) once the Horizons pack launches i.e. December 2015.
.
So the extra £30 that the current owners pay is for the ability to play the game between now and the Horizons launch date.
.
Given most PC games are back on the shelf after a couple of months and they cost £30 plus, this doesn't seem unreasonable.
.
Here's a quick table showing the total paid and what you get for it.
