I’m a huge Elite fan and backed right away from the KS even when I knew
I'd not have a PC able to play it till winter this year. All I’ve seen is a craft heading towards a plant, land and a wee roaming vehicle come skidding out in a clip. Even being a fan I’m finding that a bit of a stretch to buy into. I’ve not even played my Copy yet that’s been sitting in the store since Dec 2014 and to get this expansion if I qualify for discount would be another £30. So a new player that I would consider myself having never played yet can buy Horizons including the base game for £40. I’d have been better not backing and getting the game cheaper at the time and buying horizons now as I wont be playing till winter 2015 anyway. But hay that’s just me.

KS backers Base game price £20
Horizons Expansion £30

Total £50

Horizons (with free base game included) £40

Almost a kick in the nuts for backing so early and not playing yet!

The problem with your comparison is that with DCS you don't need a completely separate game to play all of the modules together. We don't know exactly just yet (or at least I haven't read yet) how the base game players will be able to interact with Horizons players or with those who have the future expansions. In DCS, it doesn't matter if you have the A-10 or any of the other modules or not to actually play together. On a server in DCS I have seen anything and everything flying in that game together that is offered as a module in that game. And I don't have to own the other modules for that to happen.

That shouldn't really be an issue since we already have group modes and solo modes in this game. Players in open can't interact with players in those modes either. Not directly at least.

This thread is about the funniest thing I have seen on any forums ever!

Since joining the game I have seen various complaints, most of which seem valid but there are some really stupid one's also! Then comes the threads about which joystick to use featuring the full range of £150+ flight controllers followed by the threads about what your rig looks like. Projectors, custom chairs, 3 screens, 4K, home made cockpits and a whole host of ipads for every site imaginable. Finally there is the hobby of telling us what hardware you have in your rig via your signature.

Then this...

Exactly! I have spent a certain amount of $$$ on the joystick, throttle, even a new keyboard and a new table (small amount of $ comparing to other big rigs)... The price of the expansion is just minimal.

So because one game is expensive then other games should be too?! Seriously, it's like I've stepped into the Twlight Zone.

No, but it proves that a game can be expensive and still be commercially viable. And frankly Frontier Developments doesn't really care if you and me consider it to be expensive or not, just that enough people will buy it to be successful. That's basic business.

One thing I will not be buying until I've seen the reviews and gameplay. I lapsed when ED came out because I was a fan of the first 2 games but that won't be happening again.

OP are welcome to buy a ship in Star Citizen. I think the last one on sale was $400 bucks.

No No get the $15,000 pack - oh wait - they're sold out.

GET THE $10,000 ONE INSTEAD!!!!:D

Here's a quick table showing the total paid and what you get for it.
.
MethodCostWhat you get
Premium Beta£100Access to game from Early 2014, beta access, lifetime expansions but risk on unfinished game
Beta£50Access to game from mid 2014, beta access but risk on unfinished game
Beta + pre-release lifetime pass£85(£50+£35)Access to game from mid 2014, beta access, lifetime expansion but risk on unfinished game
Pre order£25Access to game from Dec 2014 but taking a risk on unfinished game
Launch + Horizons£70 (£40+£40-£10)Access to game from Dec 2014
Now + Horizons£60 (£30+£40-£10)Access to the game from now
Horizons (newcomer)£50Access to the game from Dec 1015 (est)
Horizons Lifetime pass£130Access to the game from now, beta access, lifetime expansions

Good work. But the Horizons (newcomer) should be £40. The beta is £50. Also the Mercenary edition pre-order was £35.

I know, and obviously my hope is that most people will consider it too expensive and force FD to change policy. That's just my hope and I understand everyone makes their own value judgements/gambles. ED seems to mainly appeal to a wealthy, older gamer so it's likely to perpetually raise prices and push new content that divides the community. I'm OK with that, I've had fun and can cash out whenever I choose.

What you seem to miss is that this is not a traditional MMO, whereby an expansion renders previous content largely obsolete and as something to be quickly leveled past. The base game is worth every penny it was at launch, no matter how many expansions are released. It's absurd to claim that the extra £30 is to play between now and Horizon's launch. We already paid for the game, there are not huge server costs as in EVE or WoW. Your argument makes no sense.

With all due respect, I think you've missed the point.
.
Alot of indignation is centred on "I paid £40 for the game, now I have to pay £30 FD the expansion (£70 total)0but a newcomer only pays £40 for the base game and the expansion".
.
You need to take the fact that one person has had the game for an extra year. It's an accepted part of life that the price of many things, in particular media like songs, games and movies reduce in price over time. By your logic, copy of GTA should be the same price as when it launched (around £30 from memory) and in iPhone4 should still be over £500

people have to remember this (or at least they are representing it as such) is more like a traditional expansion pack much like the old days and not some 1-5 hour DLC.

if you want to direct any anger point it to the paintjobs. cosmetics should not cost $3.50-15.

CBA to read the entire thread.... so....

  • It's not high, it's a massive expansion!
  • WoW charge the same for their expansions on an almost yearly basis... You should know this by now...

Elite's not even been out for 1 year.

Thanks, I'll amend, the £25 was the Ks pledge to get a digital copy of the game, i.e. it had to be paid well in advance of launch. The mercenary pre order (which the Ks £25 was updated to be equivalent of) was only available a few months before launch, so was a much lower risk.

Elite's not even been out for 1 year.
neither has the iphone6, and that's cheaper now than at launch....

The Goal is always to get as much money for your product as you can. Thats the price they think will do it.

To much or not? Well, only the market will be able to answer that question. If it sells and makes good profit they did it right, if not they where wrong. Its that simple.

I actually think the pricing is fair, (I know, me supporting FD, the sun rose from the west today) considering the amount of free content we've gotten so far.

I'll buy this when it's finished.

Ooohahahhhhaha, can't believe I got that out with a straight face. £40 for a game I already bought, plus riding on a buggy plus a version of a ship that already exists? Yeah, no.

Also, does anyone know where I can buy a white horse and white armour? I can't find a single one locally, for some reason.

Landing on rocky airless planets and driving a buggy around is massive? Hmm ok.

Considering you will have to implement new game mechanics, it is a pretty big deal. The driving model for the buggy doesn't appear out of thin air, for example.
