Elite's not even been out for 1 year.

"Civilization: beyond earth" launched 2 days after Elite dangerous. That game was on steam sale for $19.99 this summer, and will likely be on sale nearer $10 by the time Horizon launches.

Think of it this way:
- ED goes on steam sale just before horizon launches for £10.
- ED:H goes on sale for £30.

AFAICT that's basically identical... and yet I think people wouldn't be reacting this way o_O.

Yeah, you. Game's don't depreciate in value in the manner which was described.

Yeah and I purchased GTA 5 for £32. It's now £40. These arguments are nonsense.

Also, you know, saying it's a massive expansion to me is about as insightful as saying "Minecraft worlds are enormous". I really don't think this expansion is quite as big as it is in many people's minds. Also, what's with the endless WoW references? ED isn't a subscription based game. Who would have purchased it if it were?

you're also compairing a 4X game (a horrible one at that) to a "space sim" (debatable)

It's a steep price for the people that bought the game in alpha or beta, seeing as how we spent a lot of money on that alone. I know I bought into the beta, bought a boxed copy of the game and have paid for paint packs, and now for some reason the expansion is $60 due to it including a copy of the base game. Sure the discount knocks it down to $45, but still.

Except you've just been given examples of how they do. However, this is not the point of discussion which is paying more for our game than new player would do for both games and that is the point you missed.

£40 for a game I already bought, plus riding on a buggy plus a version of a ship that already exists? Yeah, no.

Technically its £30, since we get a loyalty discount for already owning Elite.

I'm going to wait and see, as well. I don't do Pre-order, but I think FD can't really screw it up any further (Don't quote me). I hope I've seen their bottom line of screw up (Please don't make 1.4 a new record, please).

lol no mate, no. The fellow suggested Elite should be cheaper now overall (game and expansion), but games don't depreciate that fast. Also I gave an example to the contrary to further compound by point - that in such a small time frame (less than a year), prices can fluctuate in the opposite direction! 5 or 10 years, aye - I'm sure I'll find Elite Dangerous in a £5 bargain bin...but not after a few months.

Also if you bothered to read up, you'll see I discussed all the rest ages ago anyway - so I didn't miss anything - but I appreciate the attempt to totally undermine me.

Nope I responded to your post. It stands on it's own doesn't it or do all your posts require fact checking every other post you made?

So you're asserting that 8 months is too soon to drop the price on games and no publishers does that?

Yes I'm afraid you do need to read everything to understand the context sometimes.

I didn't say that. Post #269: The guy was referring to GTA (1). That game is now 18 years old. I simply said, "Elite's not even been out for 1 year."
That's all.

I'm afraid it will likely cost you £40 at launch, the £10 discount is a limited time offer. It's the pressure on loyal customers to buy now before we've seen it that I object to. You only get a discount if you gamble.

Don't even get me started on the move of removing the lifetime pass then bringing back the exact same thing at 4x the price.

so basically frontier is going on a soft aproach to subscriptions... because you can´t get acces to all that E: D was supposed to be without buying to a new "season" every year

It's not that easy to find comparable titles with data covering the discount dates - "Far Cry 4"? (discounted down to £22.49 so far)
Maybe "Starpoint Gemini 2"? (reduced to <£10)
Or the critically acclaimed "Wasteland 2"? (£15)

You can check on https://steamdb.info but it's hard to find any title on steam that doesn't experience massive discounting 6 months after release (excluding a few massive IPs like 'GTA').

Alot of indignation is centred on "I paid £40 for the game, now I have to pay £30 FD the expansion (£70 total)0but a newcomer only pays £40 for the base game and the expansion"

DING! DING! DING! This is absolutely correct IMO. So that leaves me with two questions: First, why is Horizons being essentially marketed as an expansion to ED, yet is being sold as a complete new game? Second, is this how it will be the model for the rest of the expansions?

WOW, Eve etc all charge you a monthly amount, would you rather ED worked on that model because i wouldn't and i am sure there would be more outcry against that.
I'd be interested to see how you'd pay developers to work and to keep AWS server instances online, i am all ears....
Those games aren't P2P, and have DRASTICALLY higher production costs. If E.D. was fully featured and complete... i'd be open to looking at paying for an expansion. But considering there is no actual content in the base game, why would you be ecstatic about paying for more meaningless procedurally generated imagery with no content? Am I the only one who is completely pessimistic about this announcement?

If I offered you a chance to pay £40 now to play GTA6 (launching tomorrow) and then pay £30 for the expansion due in 12 months (i.e £70 in total over 12 months) or you could pay £40 in 12 months time and not play any GTA6 until the expansion came out in 12 months when you can play both.
:
Which would you go for?
:
Pay more but get the utility of playing GTA5 for the next 12 months
:
hold your excitement in check and save yourself £30?
:
Is playing GTA6 for a year worth £30 to you?

Didn't the expansions in World Of Warcraft cost about the same as the Original game ? and you also paid a monthly subscription.

Personal I always use the £10 / Hour rule of thumb i.e if I pay £40 for something I expect to get at least 4 hrs of fun out of it anything less and I fell I've been had and any more bonus.

Also its always more expensive to be among the "first" I'm sure it will drop in price with Deals, Specials after a month or two.
