Hotas/Joystick help

Hi,

I really do not know where to post this so I apologize if this isnt the right place for this ... I looked for an offtopic section or something but nada ..

I'm looking to get myself a (preferably) HOTAS setup to play Elite/X3/[insert other similar games here] or in case i dont find a hotas, a good flight stick.

Since I have 0 experience when it comes to joysticks/hotas since i never owned one I dont know what to choose.
I also am not going to dump insane money on stuff like the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS setup.

Suggestions?

Yes, I suggest you use the forum search function or Google. This has been discussed a gazillion times with a lot of good advice given.

I have used the Thrustmaster HOTAD X, and it is a good joystick (for around £40), but I now use a Saitek X52, and it works well in the game (for, amongst other reasons, being the one the game uses for the visuals).

In which case, wait for another two weeks or so. Both Thrustmaster and Saitek have announced new stuff for May. With Saitek, it'll be the X-56, Thrustmaster hasn't let the cat out of the bag yet.

In the low cost segment, the Thrustmaster T-Flight currently sems to be the favourite with the crowd here.

^^^ As above, if this is your first HOTAS and you are not sure you absolutely cannot beat the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X for value, ability, compatibility etc.

It's just a really good piece of kit and will probably last you a lot longer than you expect. I've been using mine a year when I had fully expected to upgrade after a couple of months.

I used the t-flight for a couple of months then got the saiteck x-55 really good HOTAS only reason I changed though was I wanted more buttons to assign than the t-flight had

I've been using Thrustmaster HOTAS-X since premium Beta release and I can't fault it for the money.

Don't forget that you can use some of the buttons as modifiers. I use the buttons on the side of the throttle to modify the action of the buttons and hat on the joystick.

I use X52 pro.. only choice for me really because I absolutely want twist stick for yaw..

As said before, some have concerns over quality, but with 14 months of heavy use, no issues other than a sticky indent (easily removed and better without it imo) :)

Another vote for the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X.
Cheap and cheerful it adds another dimension to gameplay.

As mentioned, taking time to configure "Shift" buttons helps.

Cheers, didn't know this and look forward to seeing what they're like.

My Tflight HOTAS-X has been in daily use for over a year now without a glitch (touch wood) definitely worth spending the small amount of money to get started (I bought a second as a spare, still in it's wrapper).

Glad to hear about the impending releases, thanks for that. If Thrustmaster produce something in the mid-price range to compete at the Saitex X55 cost for example I will be really interested. I have used the Warthog and Saitek's X55 and found both just too big to be sensible on a multi-use computer desk (loved the extra controls on both and the feel of the Warthog stick, in fact if it had twist I would probably have kept it). I bought a Saitek X52-Pro several years ago for FSX and really enjoyed using it. I left it in the cupboard for a year and dusted it off for when I started ED. Unfortunately, the rubber coating on the throttle and stick turned sticky and Windows 10 + Asus motherboard caused some issues that I could not resolve so I looked into buying a new hotas combo.

The choices for me were the Saitek X55 or the Thrustmaster Warthog Combo + Saitek Combat Pedals. The Warthog stick does not have twist like the X52/X55 so pedals are the next best option A bad back made me go with the X55.

The X55 throttle is fantastic once you get a good non-slip fabric. The stick, however, is not so good. The thumb switches and buttons on the top of the stick are far too high for comfortable use and the hand rest height is not adjustable like the X52. Also, after a month of use it creaks and is no longer very smooth in operation.

I am now hatching a plan to convince the purse keeper that I need another stick!

Hey thanks guys for your suggestions.

Yeah im sorry i didnt use the search function, i guess i just jumped in and asked without thinking much. Now that I think of it, this kind of question probably was asked 1M times on this forum :)

Anyway, it does seem that most people suggest the T.Flight Hotas X. Only problem is that I cant seem to find it anywhere where i live and I've only found the T.Flight Hotas 4.
Anyone used that? Any idea of how it compares to the X?

EDIT: I seem to have found the Hotas X. Its cheaper than Hotas 4 ... Hotas 4 better than X?

Far as I know the 4 is pretty much the same, but PS4 compatible (X works with PS3).
One button on mine seems to have given up after over a year and a half, I could probably fix it, but it was so cheap to begin with I might as well hang on to see the new ones.
