Hovercraft?

to be honest, unless we are able to land on atmosphere planet or the hover tech does not need any air to run on....

We wont be seeing hovercraft like the one in NMS

What are the odds of getting some sort of hovering or jet power vehicle for surface exploration? I'm loving elite in vr, but every time I land on a planet I pretty much have to swap back to desktop as the rover is extremely nauseating for me :(

that aside it'd be nice to have a little variety for surface exploration as well, we have dozens of ships, why only 1 rover?

Same - the rover makes me sick regardless how I play it. 30 minute stints is about it before I need to stop, or throw up. I'd dearly love to be able to fly around in a skimmer type craft. Make it slower, if you must, for balance or whatever... just so long as I find a way to not get sick when searching for mats!

Z...

Lock the VR Camera to the horizon to make it a bit better in VR. Non-VR people won't need this, but those of us who use it find it helps. I like the idea of a hovercraft as well. It would be less jarring...something like "skimmer mode" for fighters would be good as well.

Hovercraft or not I really would like to see more SRV types. Especially something bigger that could be deployed only from larger ships with more cargo and attack power.

IMO, this is the best reason for skimmer SRVs. Expand the cargo capacity of the wheeled model slightly, and use the flying one for fast exploration and no combat (no shield?). Give it a single barrel instead of dual, no shield, 2 cargo, and flight. Let the wheeled one pick up 4 cans.

I don't have a nausea problem myself, but I feel you. And the SRV does spin out a lot.

Try flying more. When moving distances in my SRV, I spend 99% of it with 4 pips to engine and a LOT of time airborne. And most of the rest of the time on the ground is GETTING airborne, or shooting/collecting rocks.

You mean like the one Frontier have already designed and built? :D

(I've posted this before, apologies for the repetition)

Hate to say this but don't hovercraft traditionally need an atmosphere to operate in?

I think skimmers use thrusters actually. There could arguably be a thrust to weight issue on high G worlds .. and, though not saying hovercraft wouldn't be cool, especially amphibiously exploring an earth-like jungle (!) but you can always board your ship, fly 100km in no time and then redeploy SRV.

Basically saying, I think I'd prefer a personal, lightweight rocketman jetpack (and more classes of SRV) to a hovering vehicle for exploring airless worlds. Meself.

They could just blow air out. It's the future, anything is possible ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't care what the alternative is, or the pseudo-physics involved. I just want a vehicle that doesn't make me want to puke after 5 minutes.

I was walking the dogs yesterday and there was some bloke with a yellow hovercraft belting around near the jetty.
Sorry about the low res pic. Took me a while to think it was newsworthy.

I agree, it's very silly that the skimmers and goliaths exist and aren't player purchasable and interchangeable with the SRV (can you say 'zero coding effort'?). Let the skimmer version have 2 cargo and be fast, but also be fragile and a downright liability on high G worlds. In contrast give the existing SRV FIVE tons of cargo storage (I don't care how you justify it, tardiss magic?)

4 types of skimmers, most players will never notice there was more than 1. Such a waste.

Why not a player-owned, controlled and deployed Skimmer and call it done?

Exactly what I was thinking the other day. Have a skimmer-technology based speeder with hovercraft-like controls.
- goes much faster than SRV to interesting places
- has certainly a different driving/flying model
- does not induce nausea so easily (stable horizon helps SRV but is annoying)

I'd say we need:

- a light, sentry-style hoverSRV that's fast as hell but has no cargo capacity (remember, materials =/= cargo) and little in the way of shielding or defense

- the current Scarab SRV we have now, basically the Mario of the surface vehicles

- a heavy-duty crawler on tank treads that's slow and eats fuel like it's going out of style, but can take a beating and can carry a whopping eight tonnes of escape pods and salvage. No jump jets, cannot be flipped. And is strong enough to push wreckage around like a bulldozer to boot.

easy - Star citizen.

Got one.

only 1 rover coz money / devtime / lack of staff - pretty much the same reason behind why this latest "season" stalled before it was halfway completed and why they are abandoning the system altogether.

TBH I doubt such a thing will ever appear in the game.

Im in the 'SRV In VR makes my sea sick' group as well which is a shame because some of the surface bases are spectacular in VR. I haven't managed more then about 30mins so far.

In a world where the thrusters are good enough to fly at 1m above the ground anyway it seems odd that the wheel hasn't been abandoned but right now i would settle for better suspension
