The first neutron star I ever came across caused me to emergency drop from SC. I had zeroed the throttle, but maintained my heading directly at it while I inspected planets on the System Map to see if I wanted to scan any of the ones that were 200,000 LS out. I wasn't in the System Map for terribly long, maybe 1 minute?
If you leave Orbital Lines on (I turn them off while exploring) and target something other than the NS, it should display a circle around it at the range that will drop you from SC. It is quite large in comparison with the star itself. I think it's similar to what you'll see with a white dwarf, but more hazardous because the NS itself is difficult to spot.

I'm really curious as to what level of detail is on them. Too bad I can't get closer

.
Generally speaking, the display of stars in the System Map is fairly close to how they look in the game. In the case of NS that's probably the best view we'll get until someone in the ED Universe invents the very first telescope.
